Ethiopia presses with Nile projects despite Egypt’s opposition Posted on 03/08/2011 in Latest Headlines | Comments (0) Ethiopia has launched its biggest ever irrigation project over the Nile River after receiving US$100 million from the World Bank. The project is going ahead despite disapproval from Egypt, which is against such activities along the Nile. It will become Ethiopia’s biggest water project along the Nile alongside the Great Renaissance Dam hydro power dam project. Construction of the Renaissance Dam, which will boost Ethiopia’s electricity exports in the region, sparked a diplomatic row with Egypt over the use of the Nile’s water. Hayalsew Yilma, the programme coordinator in the Ethiopian ministry of Water and Energy on Tuesday said a feasibility study and detailed design works for the Megech-Seraba and Ribb irrigation project were now complete. The project is expected to 100,000 hectares of land in the Horn of Africa country’s Nile Basin. The World Bank approved a loan of US$ 100 million in 2008 to help the country increase its agricultural productivity, accelerate growth and reduce rural poverty.

National Electoral Commission Sets Election Dates Hargeysa, Somaliland, July 30, 2011 (SL Times) – Somaliland National Commission issued a press release in which it announced the dates of the coming municipal, parliamentary and national elections. The dates were as follows: 1-The opening of new political parties and municipal elections - August 2011 – April 2012 2-Registration of citizens/voters - June 2011- June 2012 (Feasibility Study, Design and Implementation) 3-Completing citizen/voter registration - February 2013 4-Parliamentary elections - May 2013 5-Election/selection of the Upper House - May 2014 6-Presidential and vice presidential election - June 2015. The National Electoral Commission said that although it was fulfilling its constitutional duties, it also took into account the decisions by the House of elders and the president’s speech to the joint session of the legislature. The NEC also highlighted the positive impression that Somaliland’s last presidential election had on the international community and how it made Somaliland a model for the rest of Africa.

Hargeisa (SomalilandPress)—Somaliland Foreign Minister Dr. Mohamed Abdillahi Omar returns back from his trip to London where he held several meetings at Chatham House (formally known as The Royal Institute of International Affairs). Dr Omar was in London in order to take part in a series meetings to discuss Somaliland’s current political status and the progress that his government has made since it was elected last year. Foreign Minister Dr. Mohamed Abdillahi held a short press conference at Egal International Airport where he gave an upbeat assessment of his trip and the outcomes of various meetings. Minister Omar claimed that the meetings in London had brought a great success for the country because all the leaders that he has met with in London all spoke highly about Somaliland’s progress. When the minister was asked what was the success of that meeting he said; “…the international community has promised to work with Somaliland and welcome the growing relationship that it has developed with them”. Dr. Omar went on to say that the leaders that he met with in Chatham House were all forth coming about the five European members Ministers that all had visited Somaliland in the last few months and the positive reports that they all gave about our country. The minister concluded the press by saying the country’s self sufficiency has proven to the rest of the world and therefore donor countries all see Somaliland as a country that can be worked with. Those present at the Chatham House discussions in London had heard Mr Alun Michael, British Member of Parliament and chairman of the All Party Committee on Somaliland speak repeatedly of the enormous respect that Somaliland has earned over the last twenty years under successive administrations. Whilst there were plenty of warm words towards Somaliland a number of attendees at the Chatham House meetings felt the discussions were somewhat “inconclusive” with several expressing disappointment about the apparent lack of concrete foreign policy detail provided by Somaliland’s Foreign Minister.
