Chimera;947965 wrote: - As there was no plans to grant early Independence to the territory, progress towards self government was slow untill the second half of the fifties. Around that time, however the pace was greatly accelerated chiefly to the growth of nationalist movement and the approaching date of independence in the Trustee ship - The Somali Republic: An Experiment in Legal Intergration pg 4 - In February 1960 a Legislative council was elected by Universal adult male suffrage. On April 6 this council unaninamously passed a resolution stating its desires to recieve independence before 1 july, so that the country could be united with Somalia when it became independent - Encyclopedia Americana pg 251 +1, and there are many more sources. Anyone familiar with the modern history of the Horn of Africa can tell you that British Somaliland's nationalist movement and independence was precipitated by nationalist activity in the South and its scheduled independence date of 1960, and that unification occurred with the mass enthusiasm of Somalis in both regions. If you believe in the post-1991 independence of Somaliland, that is your position, but trying to erase Somalia and Somaliland's history to fit your nationalism will not work. Just own it and focus on the present, that is developing a state in the context of state collapse and post-collapse.

Saalax;947941 wrote: You're a southerner. Never speak about decency to an afro hashemite northern elite. You have been butchering the Somali name over 22 years and cannibalizing each other to the point foreign troops had to interfere to stop your scrap metal looting ways. No I'm not, in fact my family is well known in Somaliland's history and were active members of the 1950s nationalist movement, as well as SNM. I just don't care for lazy argumentation and BS distortions of history by SL nationalist forum trolls, and I especially dislike the othering and vitriol directed towards the fellow Somali by reinscribing racist tropes. Afro hashemite northern elite! The self-hatred runs deep.

Where is my home, Saalax? A little presumptuous, no? Xaaji Xunjuf;947933 wrote: The brits advised the Somalilanders not to unite even the NUF party of Micheal mariano suggested at that time to the Brits provincial administrative governor that Somaliland is still not ready for Independence. But Since SNL of Cigaal and Ali meygaag and Sayid Ahmed founder of hisbillah independence movement later merged with the SNL , were the majority of the Parliament they were pro independence and so pro union they led the Somaliland people into destruction also the elections were rigged , Micheal mariano and his crew won more than they were given. Independence and than being part and ruled by the chauvinist koonfurians means little girl. The South had little to do with the Somaliland independence movement , SYL was not even known in Somaliland when the brits gave hawd and reserve area to Haile selasie. Thats when the Somaliland elites started being worried and they only believed that they could get that land back if they united with the Koonfurians the dissatisfaction with the brits was enormous. But the Koonfurians had little to do with it. Still i dont see anything wrong with what the 2 men from borama said , independence means nothing if you are ruled by another country. I understand these men from borama Revisionist hogwash.

Turn your secessionist blinders off for a moment and actually read the text instead of projecting content that isn't there. This is colonial nostalgia, these ****** are saying Somaliland was better off under British tutelage than anything else, then casting a racist gaze towards their fellow Somalis in the south. PS - The British did not advise the former British Somaliland not to join the south, in fact it was the former Italian Somaliland's scheduled independence that precipitated nationalist activity in the north and led to their independence. But that's an entirely different discussion.

I'm not sure what you read, but I read the words of self-hating, racist morons apologizing to their former British masters for their freedom and independence. Embarrassing.

Haatu;947779 wrote: Oba, once a week! Yikes. No wonder you didn't have the confidence to claim your prize in the library Saff, I like to sleep by midnight latest although I can do all-nighters easilly I usually end up with a headache. I get enough sleep, but my hours are a little different. I'm good with about six hours so I'm usually up in the late morning. I'm a grad student so I don't have many classes, just a lot of unstructured free time to read and write so fortunately I'm able to accommodate my weird sleep cycle

But seriously, I don't consider it betrayal, and neither do I believe I'm a traitor for listening to Ethiopian music or studying their language for that matter. I don't think Somali identity is so weak that these things are threatening

That's a worse betrayal, who chooses Ethiopian food over Somali food except traitors and those lacking taste buds?
