Abtigiis;958264 wrote: Saffrez, it means my defender, my shield, my pride - one word for all this. Here it is Tilahun singing at the battle front during the Ethiopia-Eritrea war, but the song is a very old one and hugely, hugely popular. Thanks for this. Are there other demonstrations going on today or planned for the near future?

Tallaabo;958307 wrote: This thread is discriminatory:mad: It is an exclusive club for the privileged western nomads who saw no hardship and child abuse in madarasas, and schools. Those of us whose childhood whose entertainment were adult rated horror stories like dadqalato, qori ismaris, dhagdheer, cigaal shidaad, iyo madax kuti tales are not included here because we don't have video clips to show:eek: Tallaabo that is not fair, most of us Western nomads were still terrorized by dhagdheer stories and madrasa teachers (on the weekends, of course)

Abtigiis;958255 wrote: Indeed, Addis witnessed a large demonstration which passed off peacefully. I think Hailemariam is heading to the right direction. Last week, he encouraged the Parliament to ask questions to Ministers when the present performance reports. Even this small gesture was not allowed by the tyrant Meles. The level of repression has gone down. The anti-corruption commission led by Ali Sulieman is somehow allowed to do its job. Now, he allowed this demonstrations. I believe Hailemariam is trying to revive institutions; for there was none under the monarch Meles. It bodes well for Ethiopia. But these are very tentative measures, so we will have to see how it unfolds. I will post the video of the demonstration later. Tens of thousands of Ethiopians singing "Ethiopia...yenya mamekia" was breathtaking. People are calling for justice and freedom...the two things I have always said are missing in Ethiopia. Inat hager, Ethiopia... Inat hager, Ethiooooopia, Eeeeeeeeeethiopia, yenya memekia!.... They chanted, waking Tilahun Gesesse from the grave. What does "memekia" mean? Pride?

Xaaji Xunjuf;957950 wrote: ^^ He was good the first 10 years, but the last 10 years was a disaster Yes, the downward spiral began with the @gaden War. I'm just surprised when people fail to see the connections between his regime and the collapse and contemporary political landscape. We have him to thank for politicizing clan in ways no one could imagine, and the most lasting legacy of his rule has been the destruction of Somalis' faith in being a subject and citizen of the state in favour of clan as the operative political unit and guarantor of collective security and group welfare.

Addis next week. Do you guys have any favourite spots I shouldn't miss?

Sorry D.O.C Haatu;957850 wrote: I don't know, maybe because I felt like sh*t afterwards? Trust me there's reading for leisure, and then there's reading as if your life depends on it. Humans are a sociable species, we need to get out and mix with others and this can't happen if you're holed in in the house library (I always wanted one) all day. See, to me the best books are the ones that completely consume me in that way, and I've often read novels in one sitting. It's been a long time since I've read for pleasure though, so much of my reading now is non-fiction for school and I spend most of the day reading during the school year. I still enjoy it but it's a different type of experience. I don't think reading a lot is harmful though, there's a lot of anti-intellectualism in those sorts of statements that I find dangerous and problematic.

D.O.C;957849 wrote: Oooooooooh thanks saffy, this map would definitely satisfy mr somalia's argument. I didn't know alphy had posted this historic map in his world, thanks for sharing though. Pangaea was before humans though, but let's not allow that minor detail to detract from this theory.

Haatu;957843 wrote: It does. There's been times in the past where I spent my entire weekend reading. Literally most hours that I was awake and late into the night. It was the Demonata Saga which I finished in like a week. Wallahi I think those books had sixir on them that made you constantly read them. And what's wrong with that?
