  1. Her family is continuing her lawsuit... Houda Rafle: Woman’s family pursues lawsuit after her cancer death The day after Houda Rafle, 28, died of cancer, her family says it will continue with the negligence lawsuit against Trillium Health and a radiologist. The family of a deceased Toronto woman plans to pursue a lawsuit against a hospital and doctor, alleging their errors resulted in her premature death, their lawyer says. “Their wish is that they very much want to continue the lawsuit that Houda started,” lawyer Duncan Embury said of the family of Houda Rafle, 28. Rafle, a television producer, died Wednesday from cancer. Just two weeks earlier, she and her family — her parents and six siblings — filed a statement of claim, alleging negligence against the Trillium Health Partners and radiologist Dr. Ivo “Ivan” Slezic. “Houda started this process to bring about change and they feel very strongly that the process should continue and that change is absolutely required in our system,” Embury said. Both the hospital and the doctor plan to challenge the lawsuit. Lawyers for Trillium have filed a “notice of intent to defend” and Slezic’s lawyer, Kelly Tranquilli, said “a defence will be delivered in due course.” Houda Rafle battled advanced cancer until her death at the age of 28. Her family says it will continue with her negligence lawsuit against Trillium Health and a radiologist she says missed seeing a tumour near her heart on a CT scan.Trillium and the doctor plan to fight the charges. Through his lawyer, Slezic expressed condolences to those close to Rafle. “We have learned the sad news of Ms. Rafle’s passing and our sympathies are with her friends and family. The issues raised in Ms. Rafle’s lawsuit are before the courts and therefore, it would not be appropriate for Dr. Slezic to comment further at this time,” Tranquilli wrote in an email. The hospital also refuses to comment on the legal challenge. The lawsuit alleges Slezic and the hospital failed to notice a cancerous tumour near Rafle’s heart on a CT scan done in March. Another scan done in August showed the tumour had grown and cancer had spread to her lungs. It later spread to her brain. Doctors reviewed the first scan and discovered the tumour was present back in March, according to the statement of claim. The lawsuit, which seeks $2 million in damages, charges that Rafle missed five months of treatment because of the delayed diagnosis, hastening progress of the disease. Trillium has detected other problems with Slezic’s work and is in the process of reviewing 3,500 diagnostic tests that he initially read. Meantime, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath issued a statement, expressing sorrow over Rafle’s death: “I was saddened to hear that Houda Rafle lost her battle with cancer early Wednesday. This beautiful 28-year-old woman had her whole life ahead of her and this tragic story just breaks my heart. Houda’s story touched many, and she went through it with grace and dignity. Her determination to stay positive and focused was commendable. Our thoughts are with her family and friends.”

For the sake of Somalia, I hope there are more physicists than political scientists I happen to think we need more political scientists, actually... lots of us in the sciences and math and hold those fields in high esteem, all the while getting upset with the discourse and representations of us in policy, media, etc. You need Somalis in the social sciences and humanities for us to be able to participate in the discourse. I'm in graduate school, studying African history.

  5. I love Ethiopian music so no judgments here I'm on mobile so can't embed, but currently listening to Mahmoud Ahmed's "Tew Limid Gelaye"... reminds me of the jazz clubs in Addis.

It's human nature to feel more emotion when one finds it easier to relate to a person/situation, whether that's due to the circumstances of the death, proximity (same diaspora community, city), relationship with the person, even as minor a detail as having a similar smile or the same name as someone you know. Why should we be more moved by deaths in Somalia than say, the Philippines, if not for our ability to relate more to fellow Somalis? Apophis' attempt to hijack the thread by bringing up the scale of suffering in the world doesn't change this fact. Would you say this to her parents, her siblings who were by her bedside when she passed? Should they scale down the pain they're experiencing over the loss of one life, because hundreds of other people died elsewhere? I've been that person too... I don't think there's a single shooting death of a young Somali man in Canada that hasn't brought me to tears, because I know exactly what it's like to be that grieving Somali family in the news and my heart breaks for every family that has to experience that. That's not to say the life of a drug dealer I've never met is worth more sympathy than 40 deaths in Hiiraan, but you can't help the connections you make with certain stories and the impact they make on you due to your shared context or circumstances.

  8. This talk about historical revisionism and founding myths to legitimize new states has me missing Somaliland lool Dadkaygu haduu tashaday, maxaa loo daba socda?
  9. Alpha Blondy;988403 wrote: ^ Canadian thanksgiving? you didn't answer my questions. About why nations have to lie about their history and construct founding myths, you mean? I explained Canadian Thanksgiving... it's a harvest celebration not tied up to this foundation narrative, we aren't even a republic dee there's no need to come up with an elaborate story of settlers and natives who got along perfectly under the tyranny of an English government abroad until revolutionaries fought for and won independence. Our country was basically founded by a fur company that today is a shitty department store no one even shops at. I bought some mittens there once.
  10. Alpha Blondy;988397 wrote: i get the point about national holidays massaging national psyches but why lie? America is not built on a lie. it's built on courage, on imagination and on personal freedoms. this is why it's the greatest country that has ever existed and will probably ever exist. go on baal...no sheeg what Canadian Thanksgiving is built on? p.s - for your national pride, i hope it's not built on setting the turkey free because of animal rights? ;) Every nation has its founding myths, and the US has one that sanitizes much of its history of colonialism, genocide, slavery, etc. Most people don't think critically about holidays like Thanksgiving or Columbus Day, or what they represent. Canadian Thanksgiving is simply a harvest holiday, with the "giving thanks" and having dinner with your family too Anyway I pity the turkeys too, although they taste delicious... I'm sure I told you before that I've become very good friends with the ones who live on my street:
  11. Alpha Blondy;988389 wrote: ma ruunba the early settlers were starving once............. and they came across a turkey and that's how the tradition came about? The story/myth is that in the 17th century, the Pilgrims (English settlers who fled religious persecution in England, and arrived in Massachusetts) had a successful harvest and celebrated with a huge feast, and invited their Native neighbours and all had a lovely Thanksgiving dinner together. It is BS historical revisionism because the truth is that the settlers basically wiped out the Native population, with direct violence and disease  It's a contentious holiday for sure. Canadian Thanksgiving was in October, and doesn't have the American mythology tied to it
  12. It's Black Friday here in America, the day after Thanksgiving and the biggest day for retail due to the massive sales and deals. Some say Thanksgiving is the most American holiday, but with its perfect mix of consumerism and violence, I would contend that you can't get more American than Black Friday. Some footage from one Walmart earlier today:

But seriously I don't hate HA, how could I when Alpha is the love of my life dee.

I have no clue where you get that thought. I'm *from* Toronto and I don't even know what her qabiil is. All of us are moved clearly because this is a tragic story, but also as DoctorKenney says, she could have been a sister, a cousin, a friend, someone we know. She's a typical young Somali woman, not at all who you would expect to become a victim of cancer. Anyway, I agree with Nin-Yaaban that we should stop feeding the troll... Classified has called me a gaal on this forum too. Disengage and move on, he is a fool.
  19. Good luck Saalax I used to go to the gym, but I find I enjoy running outside or doing workouts like these in my apartment more, and it's a lot easier for me to make excuses not to work out when it means I have to actually *go* somewhere. Plus working out at home = $free.99 lol

Add the high birthrate of Somalis in Dibadaha, and u got a very large sizeable comminity. I was just playing along after DoctorKenney's comment You're right, it's all speculation though we can get a sense of the numbers from census figures and other data. I just found it amusing that people were throwing out such random numbers.
