The EPRDF establishment is no doubt shaken by the sudden turn of events and faces a changing party. TPLF chairman has already expressed his displeasure with multiple issues, inc. release of certain prisoners and PM Abiy's speech in Ambo where he thanked the #Oromo youth—Qeerroo.

EPRDF's democratic centralism means the PM and his side (inc. Lemma, Demeke and Gedu Andargachew) will face deep criticism (Gimgema in Amharic). The TPLF chief has said the process that led to Abiy's election was outside the norm of Revolutionary Democacy. Mistrust is rife.

TPLFites say OPDO is flaunting party culture by not strictly adhering to revolutionary democacy and democratic centralism. The forced retirement of TPLF old guard has become a sore issue. TPLF boss has questioned the wisdom of replacing party elders who did not wish to retire.

Other issues likely to be deliberated upon at the Exec committee meeting: The continued displacement of Amhara civilians from Oromia and Benishangul; Abdi Illey and the Liyu Police onslaught in Eastern Oromia. The EPRDF bosses will also outline plans for party Congress in August.

THIS IS HUGE: #Ethiopia signals intentions to comply with the 2000 Algiers agreement and the 2002 border commission ruling. The boundary commission awarded the contested town of Badme to #Eritrea, which Addis refused to accept - leading to years of "no war, no peace" stalemate

Something to watch for -> last week TPLF boss Debretsion said: The PM's efforts to make peace with Eritrea won't succeed unless Tigray is involved. Warned the Federal govt not to ignore Tigray and pursue peace unilaterally. Said Feds should pay reparation to ppl along the border.

Debretsion Gebremichael is a member of the EPRDF Executive Committee that issued today's statement. Given EPRDF's history, it is inconceivable that his party, TPLF, did not agree to the decision to "fully" comply with Algiers agreement. But clearly there are tensions here...

You are concerned that it might take 30 years like Mugadishu. I think and hope that you will be even bored more. Cooler heads will prevail and find a solution or freeze the problem where it is. Move on to something else greater.

Puntland needs to focus on what is happening in Mogadishu and Hargiesa needs to realize not to interfere with Puntland, since its the region that will determine what happens next with Somaliland.

So you want Puntland to do your dirty work against the Somali government in Mogadishu and leave the Somaliland project alone.

The only difference is cadnaan1 wants the war to be big, hot, destructive, but at the end weak, exhausted and bankrupt Puntland to win.

I don't want the war to happen at all, if it happened to stop and Puntland to focus on its development and improve its status in Somalia and the region. To be more wealthy, more developed in all fields, have peace and security that comes from being organized and wealthy and powerful.

Then cadnaan1 moved to Ethiopia and started the oldest mantra of Somali against Xabeshi. What he forgets purposely is that the Somali is now a player in what is called Xabeshi/Ethiopia. Kililka interest is not and cannot be ignored in Ethiopia anymore. Kililka's interest is:

    Prevent war

    Avoid war

If at all you have to fight need to be short and with strict focused objective.

No point or purpose fighting over generalities like Irridentists when you can't manage and secure your own small house.

What a freaking liar.  Your so called Ethiopia entered an agreement with a renegade province of Somalia to undermine and dismember the Somali state and you are here shamelessly puking nonsense pullshit.

  5. Unbelievable!   This is the most enlightening and unbiased article that shows the intention of Ethiopia supported and financed by the so called IC to dismember the Somali republic for good.  It also confirms Ethiopia's policy to isolate and destabilize Eritrea hoping such acts might bring an opportunity to reunite the two countries. No wonder why our Tigray spy here is frraking out because Puntland decided to disrupt the process at this time after so many years of being loyAl to the Somali project .  The question is why now and is it not too late to liberate the brotherly clans in the north?  And how will Ethiopia respond to save the "Somaliland project" .  We know Puntland clan fiefdom puts the interest of the D clan than that of the Somali state and direct confrontation with the IC and Ethiopia will no doubt end the sspecial"naasnuujin"deal they were getting so many years as a reward to leave Hargeisa alone at the expense of other southern clans.

Former US ambassador :Meles believed one day Eritrea and Ethiopia will reunite.

"The first involves maintaining Eritrea’s isolation in order to weaken it to the point that it implodes, is formally reunited to Ethiopia or becomes a pliant, client state. The second pillar rests on maintaining the status quo in post-civil war Somalia. Simply put, a weak and fractured Somalia means that Ethiopia can concentrate its attention and forces on quelling persistent internal security difficulties and continuing to isolate and pressure Eritrea. Ethiopia has, until recently, been assisted in its goals vis-à-vis Somalia as much by the international community as by internal problems within Somalia. The cross-purposes of the international community coupled with and reinforcing political instability in Somalia, particularly in the capital Mogadishu, have resulted in the inability of the Somali Federal Government (SFG) to do anything substantive about the de-facto independent Republic of Somaliland as well as the almost entirely autonomous northeastern region of Puntland."

Politically, the Berbera Port deal has been groundbreaking. At the stroke of a pen, Somaliland took a massive step towards international recognition and permanent separation from Somalia. While neither Ethiopia nor the UAE have voiced recognition, the deal inked in Dubai certainly makes it seem that way if the anger in Mogadishu is any indication. Somalia Federal Government ministers have publicly challenged the right of Somaliland to enter into official agreements with any country. The Ethiopian-driven deal means that Mogadishu’s claims over the breakaway have weakened substantially.

Lastly, Ethiopia was able to engineer a formal, legally-binding agreement between the de-facto but unrecognized, independent state of Somaliland and the UAE. In doing so, Ethiopia further ensured the continuing Balkanization of Somalia and potentially paved the way for eventual de-jure, international recognition.

  6. Puntland proved the point that without its blessings the Somaliland project will not succeed.   And it seems the so called "Beesha caalamka" will hepar this loud and clear.  I expect more naasnuujin for Puntland for the next couble of years.  The boss USA might even order the UAE play boys to throw some more money towards  Puntland or even build Bosaso port.  Mr Gaas is playing hardballs this time after he got badly humiliated during his last visit to UAE.

  7. Midnimo ayuu sheegayaa 3dax area reerku dago wuxuu leeyahay waala xoreeynayaa.  Xaqiiqda Waxaa weeye hadii eey Somaliland joojiso sheegashada dhulkaas kana baxdo Soomaalida ugu horeeysa ee aqoonsanayo madaxbanaanida Somaliland ineey noqonanyaan kuwan maanta midnimada Soomaaliya kuqaraabanaya.

  8. I highly doubt these two clan enclaves  will go to a full scale war.  The IC and the Ethipians will not let their clan federalism posterboys misbehave badly.  At least not before the complete balkanisation of Somalia.  The Habro clans in the north and the pirates cannot even run primitive hospitals  in their respective  capitals let alone maintain and equip  clan militias to take part a long wars.

I think Mr Gaas is playing hardball with the  IC and their Ethiopian donkey.  He is showing them without the pirates loyal cooperation their Somalia project will not be successful.  He wants more money and more projects for his clan enclave.  He also wants the IC to support him politically when dealing with the rest of Somalia. Lets see the response of the IC and the Ethiopians.

My two cents on the issue of brother Qalbi Dhaqax.

He knows and every Somali should knw that absolute majority of Kililka has agreed to stay in Ethiopia as a kilil with full and complete autonomy. There is solid unity on this issue across all clans, sub clans, sub sub clans in this Somali enclave which has almost all clans, sub clans of all Somalis.

Unity of the people has been achieved on this issue. Let next generation change this if they so choose different direction.

Therefore every Somali region, state, federal or countries including NFD, Djibouti should respect this decision

If any neighbouring region of Somalia or other countries has different choice and wants to openly support anyone who does not respect this cchoice and wants to force a different direction by force of  arms on the people of the kilil, will be treated as threat.

If any neighbour wants to support someone that will kill me, what do you expect I should do with that neighbor?

Not bragging, but everyone should know that, let alone Ethiopia, even the kilil has enough reach and power. If as neighbor you do not want to respect me don't expect respect. If as neighbor you do not have good wish for me, don't expect to get good will from me.

To those who think that they can do as they wish, but nothing should happen from Ethiopian side:

How would you feel if kililka intefered in your clan competition and did damage to some of your regions? How would you feel if kililka supported one war lord or another and threw a monkey wrench. Would you be happy and "patriotic" then.

Everyone needs to respect choice of a people of a region. This applies to everybody. The Somali people lives in continent, but is not a continent. Has countries, regions, territories even if its imposed in the past. For good or bad has been accepted now. It canot be main agenda for the Somali people.

Our brother should have negotiated with kilil and federal government, come home and conduct his politics peacefully. Otherwise the least he could have done is conduct his work in secret. Otherwise Mogadishu, or regions cannot and should not tolerate anyone that operates across countries, no matter how noble or right or wrong you think his ideas are.

Here would be conditions of his release:

If he is an Ethiopian, which he is as far as I know, he needs to have his day in court and then purdoned with restrictions

If he wants to be citizen of Somalia republic, he should renounce his project of waging war on Ethiopia as a citizen of Somalia, unless he is sent by his country.

Either way best thing for him is to be Ethiopian, come to kilil and contrbute what he can as being parliamnetarian, district governor...etc many options open.

How did you come up with the conclusion that majority of Somali Galbeed population wants to remain part of Ethiopia?  Would you allow them to have a referendum to decide whether they want be independent, join with Somalia or stay within Ethiopia?

You are right the likes of Qalbi dhagax are not safe in many cities of Somalia run by Ethiopian stooges such the Habro country, the pirates etc.

Ethiopia shamelessly continues to interfere our internal affairs not only at the national level but also between different clans. You are a troll not a serious debater.

  10. Ethiopia : “We will defend Somaliland,” Said PM Hailemariam Desalegn

Raysal-wasaare-4-300x225.jpgEthiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn declared bi-partisan support for Somaliland in the case of military action against the threat from neighboring Somalia and other external militants such as al Shabab.

The Prime Minister delivered the keynote speech this weekend in the Ethiopian Parliament in front of Ethiopian legislators.

Mr. Desalegn specified that Ethiopia is ready to provide diplomatic, military, and economic support to Somaliland “should they need it”.

He underlined the long bilateral relationship between the two Horn of African states saying Somaliland and Ethiopia cooperate on many fields including security, economy and education.

He told the Ethiopian lawmakers that he recently dispatched more than a dozen directors and chairman to Somaliland as a part of a high-level technical committee that will study ways to enhance relations. He said he wants to expand existing ties to reflect on the modern geopolitics of the region.

The Prime Minister hopes the two sides will soon sign an official bilateral strategic cooperation agreement. The technical committee has been doing its studies for the past three years. Last year the gathering was held in the Ethiopian chartered city of Dire Dawa and this year in the Somaliland capital Hargeisa.

“Somaliland is a friend and a key strategic ally for Ethiopia. We will spare no expense to defend and protect Somaliland. We are ready to extend an arm of support to our Somaliland brothers every time they are in need of one,” he told the Parliamentarians.

He said that the Ethiopian armed forces were ready to fight along side those from Somaliland and offer them technical support as well as training. He said he was wary of militants from Somalia who are spurring out off that country due to military pressure from the African Union troops (AMISOM).

He did not specify if Ethiopia would support Somaliland forces against armed forces from from Somalia but he has indicated Addis Ababa will spare no expense to ensure the existence of Somaliland. He strongly emphasized that his government will standby Somaliland against any threat from “any direction”.

This is the first time one of the key nations in East Africa has openly offered its direct support for Somaliland since ending its bitter marriage with Somalia two decades ago.

The keynote speech by Mr. Desalgn comes during time when there is diplomatic rift between Hargeisa and the internationally recognized but powerless government in Mogadishu.

Equally it coincides with Somaliland’s 22nd anniversary of Independence from the rest of Somali Republic.

His message has received overwhelming support throughout Somaliland and residents have welcomed PM Desalegn’s strong support. Somalilanders consider Ethiopia the closest ally and their ties traces back to more than 300 years.

It was just weeks ago when Prime Minister Desalegn received the Somaliland President Ahmed Silanyo at his official residence in Addis Ababa.

The two heads of State concurred on the enhancement of security, education and commercial ties.

“Somaliland and Ethiopia share cordial relations of which we are determined to not only sustain but enhance as well,” President Silanyo told Somaliland and Ethiopian reporters.

On his part, Prime Minister Hailemariam, expressed Ethiopia’s interest in fostering stronger relations with Somaliland based on mutual benefit.

He said “Ethiopia is ready to further bolster its relations with Somaliland administration in the areas of trade, education, capacity building and port services.”

He also underscored that Ethiopia will extend support to Somaliland in order to ensure that Al-Shabaab forces who are fleeing from Somalia will not pose a threat to Somaliland

  11. You are wrong.  Ethiopia with the help of other powers did everything possible to prevent the reestablishment of strong United Somalia state. Here your midget leader Meles and Mrs Frazer are basically frustrated the fact that the Somaliland independent project they spend so much effort is not coming sooner and both tried to pressure the AU to start the process to dismantle the Somali state.

  12. IMPROVING RELATIONS WITH SOMALILAND -------------------------------------- 17. (C/NF) Turning to Somaliland, A/S Frazer noted the recent visit of Somaliland President Dahir Rayale Kahin to Washington. While some may interpret this visit as a sign that the U.S. was on the verge of formal recognition, A/S Frazer clarified that the United States was not getting ready to recognize Somaliland, but believed that it was important to engage with them to ensure regional stability. At the same time, A/S Frazer said that the United States would not be opposed to Somaliland independence if it should happen within an AU context. A/S Frazer said that she had raised the issue with AU Chairperson Alpha Oumar Konare, who seemed to be placing unrealistic conditions for addressing the Somaliland issue. The first was that Somaliland negotiate with the government in Mogadishu, either the TFG or its successor, regarding its independence, and the second was that there be a regional consensus on Somaliland's status, neither of which are likely to happen or result in any clear decisions. 18. (C/NF) Meles said that Ethiopia's position on Somaliland was the same as that of the United States, but that the political situation within the AU was not yet ripe for addressing the Somaliland issue. Meles said that he met with ADDIS ABAB 00000286 005 OF 005 Rayale upon his return from Washington and urged him to write to the AU requesting that they identify a timeframe for a discussion on the Somaliland issue. However, Rayale "messed things up" by essentially re-sending his previous letter requesting recognition and membership in the AU, rather than asking for a timeframe for a discussion on Somaliland. Meles said that, if Somaliland had taken the route that he suggested, it would have been likely that the issue could have been addressed soon. However, if the elections for a new AU Chairperson take place during the AU Summit, Meles said that the next chairperson is unlikely to be as positive towards Somaliland as Konare, which will only further delay any discussion of Somaliland.  19. (C/NF) Meles also noted the complications of the current political situation inside Somaliland with the delays in preparations for the municipal and presidential elections. While avoiding any specifics, Meles said that the clan dynamics in Somaliland were out of balance, but that it was important to convey to Rayale that he could not rely on "outside forces" to tilt the balance in his favor. Even if Ethiopia tried to intervene on Rayale,s behalf, Meles said, the effort would
