uchi;804791 wrote: I don't understand why we are comparing Mogadishu to other towns/Cities~ it's too far ahead to be reached by any other town in Somalia. One possible contender, surprising though it may be, is the city of Berbera. Although Berbera has been Berbera like Mogadishu has all the ingredients there. A large semi-modern deep-sea port; the longest runway on the African continent; historical areas and buildings; a beach. It has more paved roads (# of roads, not length) than any other northern city - I can confirm this. It is ideal for factories and other such investments. Unfortunately it has not received the investment mainly because of the heat. though lately it has been receiving a lot of attention. In any case, it will be cheaper to develop Berbera than it will be to bring Hargeisa up to standard. I could easily say that though Hergeisa is more populated, Berbera has much, much better infrastructure - they are not even on the same level. All it needs is cobble-stone paving of side-streets, suuqs etc. So IMO 1 = Mogadishu 2 = Berbera 3= Probably/Potentially Kismaayo IF it receives the same level of investment as Mogadishu (which I doubt). No surprise they are all port-cities.

Che -Guevara;804719 wrote: ^Somehow Sanaag looks like empty wasteland, least developed even by Somali standard. It is not so bad IMO. If you look at the place I see none of those aqal-somali-esque buulal that the urban poor live in. This is like any other large Somali city but on a smaller scale. The place needs a few tweeks no doubt, as i've outlined in my other post above.

I'm in love with Hadaaftimo... beautiful little village. Let's hope its kept that way and the character of the place is not destroyed.

Beautiful town in an amzing location ! It seems well-planned and has a good layout. To my surprise the buildings and structures look very good and are in keeping with both the surroundings and eachother - and their subtle designs are not the hideous stuff we have come across before. All in all, very nice. all the place needs now is: - Cobblestone (cut from the nearby rocks) paving of the streets, public areas and market. - Reliable electricity, if the town does not have it already. - A reliable water supply to which all the houses are connected. - A few small factories etc. to employ the locals. Then we are good to go

I would like to name one city outright, but unfortunately none of them are 'developed'. Having said that, I think Mogadishu is by far, or certainly has the most potential to become (in a comparatively short period of time), the most developed city in Somalia. It is/was the capital and as such received a lot of investment. It has the structures and ingredients there. Soon all the major roads in the city will be re-paved. Its airport will receive investment. The deep-sea port is there as well. It has the population/political/economic base; the neccesary basic layout/planning. It will be easier and cheaper to re-build this city than it will be to bring, say Hargeisa or even Boosaaso, up to the same level.

^ Can you two take your shenanigans into the domain of the PM facility. No need to waste a potentially good topic. Cherio.

Great topic Archdemos! Kudos to you. We need more of these type of productive topics, rather than the regressive cyber-conflicts (over villages and bush) people here love to perpetuate.

It is not a superpower at all. It relies entirely on external sources to keep it going, it has no private sector whatsoever, its exports amount to ~2bn per year. I was reading about munitions factories and other military manufacturing the regime has been investing in. Very interesting. -

That is an ayat in the quran if I remember correctly. Where they slept for an unknown period of time in a cave. -

It reminds me of when many, including around 40 youngsters from my home-town, including some family members, pregnant women, perished trying to cross the seas. AUN -

^ THIS was on the BBC SOmali yesterday apparently. Not to get your hopes up but there is some dispute about exactly how many years these people were held captive (some are saying that it was less than 18). Inshallah your counsin will be found in any case. -
