Istanbul Conference on Somalia, The Take Aways

Recommended Posts

More serious than London

Development oriented

Turks had the credibility behind them as they showcased works they have done in a short period of time

Somalia's local political stakeholders were by and large on the same page, at least in their official statements

Donors, and the west in general seemed embarrassed by the Turkish effort

and the Turks could not hide their pride , commitment in what they're doing in Somalia

PS. professor Abtigis , the man we admire and love, was present in Istanbul

Chimera

Where are the billion dollar projects Xiin? They had four forums discussing different types of infrastructure, was that just chatting or are there projects in the pipeline? Post-2010 Istanbul Conference there was that $1 billion investment in the energy sector but that never materialized.

^^I believe that any donations and projects will be made available once the transition period ends. So from now till then, Somali stakeholders job is, to close down the deal on all promises they made in their last Addis Ababa meeting.

Chimera,

It may be more than billion---the water projects alone could run close to half a billion. The Turks are coming, and they are serious.

Its good to have from the horse's mouth, give us more info Xiin.

Who is funding these projects, Turkey alone or EU+UN?.

and what makes you think the Turks won't cut and run once they get into grips into Somali psyche?

My in-depth info will income insha Allah...

Faroole got exactly what he wanted ---despite the controversy and the bad pr, he showed political maturity and leadership. He was well received by the Turks.

Turks are committed but their commitment depends on their domestic politics and economic growth. Erdogan approach to Somalia has a less understood, domestic politicking with intriguing political crosscutting between NGOs, Business men and politicians all with Islamist orientation .

Its good to hear that, but they need to be very careful and be aware of Somali fragility and the mistrust.

And who is this Xasan Jaamici we were hearing in the last few weeks? was he actually the power behind the conference?

Elaborate what Faroole got out of this, Any immediate projects for Puntland xoonow?

Waryaa Faroole ciriiriga ka daa

There were two conference, 1) an ujeedo badan conference where all civil society NGOs, oday dhaqameeds, and some sheekhs debated, debated and debated , ending up issuing non binding resolutions on all issues concerning Somalia, 2) a two-day, well orchestrated , international conference on Somalia, where donors , UN and international development orgs, road map signatories, and SL and delegates from 60 countries participated.

Sheekh Xasan was part of the first , he was not invited to the 2nd conference.

I am old enough to remember all 16 some odd conferences , and always somalis get excited and at the end nothing changes. The Istanbul conference was nothing but a "feel good" P.R for that nation, everything else remain the same, the same old sick 4.5, the same old 2 clans sharing the power, the same old deck of cards.same old cards , same old faces same old warlords.
