Here is brief info on what I am talking about

The helplessness and hopelessness theories are theories as to the root motivations of depression. The hopelessness theory is a theory that a person will be depressed because they have a sense that things will not get better, and they do not have any hope for improvement. This can easily be seen in cases of depression and seems like a sound theory. The helplessness theory is a concept that people become depressed due to not having control over their situation. This woulld be a sense that they cannot help or improve their situation because they can not get help for their situation.

The two theories are the same in that do not see their situation or perceived situation getting better or improving. The difference in the two theories is that in the hopelessness theory, the person sees that there is not a chance of their situation getting any better. The helplessness theory seems to show that a person believes that their situation could get better. The problem is that in a helplessness theory, a person believes that acheiving these improvements will not be able to be acheived be cause they lack the resources and do not get the help they need.
