EU to give aid of 30 million euro to help African nations fight effects of drought

Recommended Posts

BRUSSELS, Belgium: The European Union said Monday it was giving €30 million (US$47 million) in aid to help African countries fight the effects of drought.

EU Development Commissioner Louis Michel said the aid will help countries like Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya prepare better for disasters. It will also help pay for water equipment, for mapping water sources and vaccination campaigns.

Northeast Africa faces a long-term decline in rainfall and droughts have commonly lasted up to three years, the EU said. Seasonal droughts have caused a widespread humanitarian crisis there.

The EU said northeast Africa is one of the world's poorest regions which has seen a series of conflicts in recent years. The region has already received some €460 million (US$716 million) in aid from the EU since 2005.
