Global Fund approves 24 million dollars to fight malaria, TB in Somali

- Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at 14:05

NAIROBI (AFP) - The Global Fund on AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has approved a 24.4 million dollar grant to scale up health programmes in Somalia, an African country trying to emerge from 13 years of anarchy.

Aid agencies in Somalia, which has lacked an effective government since 1991, had requested 51.6 million dollars for five years from the Global Fund, but only 24.4 million was approved for two years, said an official working with Somalia Aid Coordination Body (SACB).

"The fund has already dispersed the first instalment of 4.6 million dollars to UNICEF (news - web sites) and 2.2 million dollars to World Vision for malaria and tuberculosis programmes," the official added Tuesday.

The country benefitted owing mainly to progress made in peace talks in neighbouring Kenya that culminated in last week's swearing-in of Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed as the first president of Somalia in 13 years.

The Horn of Africa nation has been without a central government and wracked by anarchic bloodletting since dictator Mohammed Siad Barre was toppled in 1991.

This parliament and president are already having a positive impact on the daily lives of Somalis.

Although the other funds being reported are not nearly enough to disarm and rebuild Somalia. But it is a good beginning and I am hopeful of the upcoming conference in Stockholm, Sweden.
