Heavy fighting breaks out in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, March 21 (Reuters) - Heavy fighting broke out in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Wednesday when the interim government's Ethiopian military allies were attacked, residents said.

They said insurgents shot at Ethiopian tanks on the streets and that the Ethiopians fired back. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

In the latest skirmish between government-allied forces and insurgents who carry out regular hit-and-run attacks on them, unidentified gunmen shot at the tanks and were answered by four shots from the tanks' cannons, residents said.

The Ethiopians also fired several rockets at the Mogadishu stadium, where residents said some insurgents had dug themselves in, residents said.

The fighting broke out near a government base in the former defence ministry headquarters, where insurgents have repeatedly struck at government and Ethiopian soldiers based there.

The interim government is struggling to tame Mogadishu, after it took over the city in late December during a brief war in which it and Ethiopia routed a militant Islamist group that ruled most of southern Somalia for the last half of 2006.

African Union peacekeepers from Uganda are also there to help the government gain control of the anarchic Horn of Africa nation. Like the Ethiopians, they are viewed as foreign invaders by many Somalis and are therefore targeted.

Many believe the defeated Islamists, along with disgruntled clan and warlord militiamen, are behind the attacks, which often start with just a handful of gunmen striking with mortars before melting back into the coastal capital's warrens.

In most cases, the attacks prompt retaliatory fire and civilians are usually the victims of the crossfire.

This government is the 14th attempt at establishing central rule since warlords ended it by toppling dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991, ushering in an era of anarchy and violence.

Mogadishu 21, March.07 ( Sh.M.Network) Heavy fighting between the Somali government troops backed by Ethiopians and a large number of armed Somalis opposing the government and the Ethiopians is continuing in the capital Mogadishu on Wednesday.

The heavy gun battle started around 6:10 am local time and then spread into fresh areas in the capital where insurgents toughened their soldiers, increasing the number of combatants with the government troops and Ethiopians in south and north of Mogadishu.

Witnesses around Former Somalia Defense Ministry told Shabelle that they saw at least 10 people, including 7 government soldiers and three civilians, who died in the gun battle.

Shabelle reporters who went to the area where that fighting was happening reported that they saw seven government soldiers who were wounded and captured by the insurgents.

The Ethiopians based at Defense Ministry compound in south of Mogadishu have been attacked by the gunmen while the Ethiopians have been firing tanks and missiles towards north of Mogadishu. It is not yet known the exact number of civilian casualties in today’s fighting. However, the fighting is continuing for four consecutive hours.

Also Shabelle reporter and a driver were arrested by government soldiers at Mogadishu international airport today, while waiting to cover live reports of a press conference due to be held by prime minister Ali Mohammed Gedi. Local journalists were informed by the premier’s assistants this morning that there would be a press conference which would be held by the prime minister inside the airport.

Government soldiers embarked on arresting journalists when they got the airport.

The fighting comes a day after ****** clan issued a press statement condemning the transitional government and threatening they would fight with the government if it did not change what it called the discriminating policy against the Somali clans.

Several bodies of Ethiopian and government troops were thrown at roads of hawlwadag, Bar Ubah and Shirlole neighborhoods as crowds of Somalis began dragging them to the ground.

Can I get a takbeeeeeeeeeeeeer ?

Allahu Akbar

Several bodies of Ethiopian and government troops were thrown at roads of hawlwadag, Bar Ubah and Shirlole neighborhoods as crowds of Somalis began dragging them to the ground

And these delusional hacks say Xamar is under control. I disagree with the dragging part(grudgingly, of course, wrong is wrong, luvvin the killing part tho), but can the blind see the sheer hatred and fury on display against every Tigrey invader and his TFG dhabo-dhilif ? No respite even in death; more telling, this replay of Black Hawk down coming from the supposed constituents of said fake government.

Try your damnest to wish reality away, you'll still wake up to it every morning.

Exactly what happens; the insurgency attacks the occupiers and collaborators with mortars and melts away, and then the occupiers and collaborators disproportionally and mercilessly retaliate against civilians.
