Qoryoley Front: Somali Islamists and Govt Clash

Recommended Posts

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Somalia's Islamist militia briefly fought government forces on Saturday -- the first clash between the two sides and one that many Somalis fear may signal a slide to war in the Horn of Africa country.

Government militia seized and set on fire two "technicals" -- heavily armed pickup trucks that are Somalia's version of tanks -- in fighting in the remote Qoryooley district, an Islamist source told Reuters.

There was no word on any casualties in the clash, the first since Islamists captured Mogadishu from warlords on June 5, challenging the slim authority of President Abdullahi Yusuf's Western-backed government.

Witnesses said government forces brought one of the Islamists' battlewagons back to Baidoa, the government's provincial base, bolstered by the reported deployment of Ethiopian troops across the border in recent days.

Diplomats fear Somalia is on the verge of major conflict after the newly powerful Islamists moved closer to Baidoa this week and quit talks with the government on Saturday, dashing hopes of a quick diplomatic breakthrough.

"We do not negotiate with a government which is being helped by the enemy of Somalia," senior Islamist leader Sheikh Sharif Ahmed said in a letter to Islamist delegates to the talks, in a reference to Ethiopia.

The Islamist leadership, vowing holy war, has called on Somalia's 10 million people to prepare to fight against the foreign troops, while Addis Ababa threatened to crush any attack on the Somali government.

Despite Ethiopia's repeated denials of reports that it has sent troops into Somalia, residents and aid workers in the southwestern town of Wajid said Ethiopian soldiers seized the airport overnight from gunmen working for the local authorities.

Two helicopters carrying Ethiopian troops landed at the airport on Saturday afternoon, they said. "Ethiopian military have been landing at the airport," said one Wajid resident, who did not want to be named.

MILITARY MOVES

Traditionally Christian Ethiopia fears a hardline Muslim state on its doorstep and possible Islamist aspirations to create a "Greater Somalia" that would incorporate Ethiopia's southeastern, ethnically Somali, ****** region.

Analysts believe Ethiopia, the Horn's dominant power, has sent up to 5,000 troops into Somalia, and is massing more on the border to deter Islamist advances.

A source close to Somali government leaders admitted the presence of Ethiopian troops on Somali soil.

"They are there, but not in the big numbers people are saying. But believe me, if the Islamists attack, they will come," said the source, who did not wish to be named.

"Our national army is not set up yet, and they have many militias, so we need assistance."

Several residents of Baidoa said more Ethiopian troops and armoured vehicles arrived overnight to guard the parliament, presidential palace and airport.

"The Ethiopian troops have changed their uniforms and are now wearing the same clothes as the Somali government soldiers," said former militiaman and Baidoa resident Abdirizak Adan.

The government imposed a curfew on Baidoa three days ago, he added.

More than 50 of the Islamists' pickup trucks mounted with heavy weapons left Mogadishu, and after being joined by Eritrean and Ethiopian rebel forces were heading for Baidoa and Buur Hakaba, a town 60 kms (37 miles) away, residents said.

The reported movements could not be independently verified.

Analysts say possible Eritrean involvement may be driven by poor relations with Addis Ababa, deadlocked over an unresolved border dispute. In a May report, the United Nations accused Asmara of funnelling arms to the Somali Islamists during their rise to power -- a charge Eritrea denies.

Ethiopia 'seizes new Somali town'

Ethiopian troops have reportedly moved into another town in south-western Somalia, two days after entering the country to protect the weak government.

Eyewitnesses say about 200 Ethiopian soldiers took control of the airstrip outside Waajid early on Saturday.

There is no confirmation from either the Ethiopian or the Somali government.

The Union of the Islamic Courts (UIC), a militia which controls the capital and much of the south, has vowed to drive out Ethiopian troops.

The Ethiopians moved into Somalia on Thursday and have been seen in Baidoa, where the beleaguered interim government is based.

'Holy war'

Eyewitnesses quoted by the Associated Press news agency say Ethiopian soldiers seized the airport at Waajid, about 70km (43 miles) to the north, before dawn on Saturday.

The town had been controlled by a local militia. It is unclear whether there was any fighting.

Other residents told Somali media that they had seen Ethiopian soldiers in the town centre.

The UIC has pledged to wage a "holy war" to drive out Ethiopian troops.

The Islamic militia drove the warlords from the capital, Mogadishu in June, saying they wanted to restore law and order.

The UIC has since consolidated its power over many parts of southern Somalia.

But Ethiopia is strongly opposed to the militia and has repeatedly warned that it will send its army into Somalia if the government is attacked.

Ethiopia has been a long-term ally of President Abdullahi Yusuf.

UIC leader Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys has accused him of being "a servant of Ethiopia".

A UN report earlier this year said that Mr Aweys had been getting significant military aid from Ethiopia's rival, Eritrea - a claim Eritrea has denied.

Mr Aweys has denied US accusations that he and the UIC have links to al-Qaeda.

Courts, govt clash in Somalia

Saturday, July 22, 2006

________________________________________________________________________________

Mogadishu, Somalia - Gunmen loyal to Somalia's Islamic courts fought government forces in a brief clash 120km from the interim government's base, said an Islamic source on Saturday.

News of the clash has heightened fears of all-out war in the country.

There was no word on casualties in the first fighting between the two sides since the Islamic courts took Mogadishu from United States-backed warlords on June 5, challenging the authority of President Abdullahi Yusuf's government.

Government troops seized and set fire to two court "technicals", heavily-armed pickup trucks, in the fighting in Qoryooley district, said the source.

"I confirm the clash occurred," said the Mogadishu-based Islamic source.

Witnesses said government forces brought one of the Islamists' technicals back to Baidoa, the government's temporary provincial base.

Is this just more Somali garbage, why did they fight 120km when they are near Bur Hakabo which is half that distance?

If this news is accurate the theater of wa will be in lower Shabbele and not Bay...

I believe this skirmish is between the deegaan people and Indhamadoowe's militia.

They always used to fight. In the current climate ayaa the situation badashay, I guess.

They also fight in degmada Awdheegle marmar.

The deegaan folks, in a direct page borrowed from a guerilla tactic, hit-and-run; that is what they used to do, same as it looks from these reports. Instead of moving the captured tikniko back to the bushes, they went to Baydhabo now, via Diinsoor, taking advantage of the current evaporating political climate at play at the region.

What a lie and propoganda! shame on the devout dim-wiited cheerleaders of warlord Yusuf...there has been no clashes in and aorund Qoryooleey whatsoever. Habsade and Saransoor are coming back to Baydhabo. Shariif is in there and let us wait and see how long warlord Yusuf will remain there. Qaybdiid and Qanyare are also on their way to Baydhabo...Mohammed Dhere is already there ....warlord congregations just started. this is a good chance for all of us, who want to see warlords perish and end up in hell. With the help of Allah, the forces of Abu-Mansur will do the sacrifice and martyrdom. Somalia will soon be without warlords and the likes og Gheedi, Gacmadheere, Xasan Abshir, Buubaa, Mohamud Sayid, Jeeleh Juriile (who has history of emezzelment and pillaging public patrimony )... all other sad and greedy opportunists will be history....

Dagaalka oo bilowday abbaarihii 12ka duhurnimo ayaa la sheegay inuu qabooday galabnimadii ka dib markii laga awood rooday beeshii taageersanyd midwoga maxaakiimta oo laga gubay laba baabuur oo nooca qoryuhu ku rakiban yihiin ah.

Markii uu soo baxay wararka ku saabsan dagaalkan ayaa markii ugu horaysay waxaa wakaallada wararka ee Reuters ay qortay in dagaalku dhexeeyey maxaakiimta iyo FS, waxaase warar dawlada ku dhaw dhaw noo xaqiijiyeen in dawladu ay gacan siisay beeshii iyada raacsayn taasi , oo sababtay degmada qoryoolay gacantooda ku danbayso.

Masuul ka tirsan midowga maxaakiimta oo la halayey wakaallada wararka ee Reuters oo diiday in magaciisa la shaaciyo ayaa qirtay in lagaga awood roonaaday goobtaas, lagana gubay laba baabuur, wixii intaas ka danbeeyeyna maxaakiimtu wax war ah kama soo saarin arintaas.

Kala shakiga iyo dagaalada labada af ee Soomaaliya hadda yeelatay ayaa yimid ka dib markii 3 maal mood ka hor si lama filaan ah ay midowga maxaakiintu kula wareegeen degmada Buur-hakaba kagana dhawaaqeen maxkamad horay loogu sameeyey magaalada Muqdisho maalmo ka hor, oo lagu magacaabo Al-ayaam.
