Addis Ababa, July 5, 2007 (WIC) – Ministry of Information (MoI) has warned The Washington Post to refrain from tainting the good name of Ethiopia.

The Ministry said today Stephanie MacCrummen, a journalist with the newspaper, has repeatedly been disseminating false reports and commentaries that do not reflect the country’s position.

The report compiled by the journalist and published on the 29 June 2007 issue of The Washington Post under the headline “Ethiopian Premier admits errors on Somalia” is one of her fabrications, the Ministry pointed out.

The Prime Minister and other senior government officials have repeatedly made it clear that Ethiopia intervened in Somalia to safeguard its sovereignty and defend itself against the threat posed by terrorists, it reiterated.

There is of course no need of repeating the report presented by the Prime Minister to the parliament and broadcast live here, the Ministry said, adding that her engaging in defaming the good name of the country would however erode the credibility and acceptance of the paper and deviates from ethics of journalism.

The Ministry recalled that the paper had also published a false report stating that the government of Ethiopia was interrogating Somali refugees in Addis Ababa and warned correspondents of such media to refrain from fabrications.

Representatives of several foreign media have been issued with press license to operate in Ethiopia, but The Washington Post has no licensed representative in Addis Ababa, the Ministry elaborated.
