Garowe(PP News Desk) — The Puntland Office of Human Rights Defender added its voice to the calls to tackle the inflation that sparked protests in Bosaso and Galka’yo.

“The Office of the Human Rights Defender has been following protests in Bosaso and Galka’yo about the depreciation of the Somali shilling. The office is documenting citizens’ protests and violations against human rights” reads a statement issued by the Office.

The Office made a refrence to the Puntland Constitution articles 117 and 118 about the obligation of the Government to find a solution to the inflation caused by, according to SIDRA and Puntland Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, “the dual exchange rate in Puntland.” The Office urged Puntland police to protect the rights of demonstrators in line with article 24 of Puntland Constitution.

Businesses in Puntland rejected the use of the Somali shilling following Puntland Government decree on the collection of import-export duties only in US dollars.

“Puntland-printed Somali shilling was a legal tender before businesses rendered it worthless against the dollar. If you can’t buy food with Somali shillings , it’s reasonable to regard it as worthless” said a livestock broker in Bosaso.
