Garowe (PP News Desk) — Meat and vegetable sellers at a major Garowe market have temporarily stopped trading in protest against a rising exchange rate.

Inji Meat and Vegetable Market looks deserted. All stalls are closed. Traders complain of a runaway inflation affecting the purchasing power of less well-off families.

Earlier in the morning Puntland Government deployed troops at the market to respond to possible demonstrations by traders.

In Puntland 1 US$ buys 46,000 shillings whereas in other parts of southern Somalia the exchange rate is stable partly because of the Somali Shilling used in other parts of Somalia is not a legal tender in Puntland.
