Deeq A. Posted October 7, 2020 The East African Community (EAC) has endorsed a Kenyan diplomat for the post of director general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). This follows a letter from Rwanda President, Paul Kagame, who is also the chairperson of the EAC bloc, a conglomeration of Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Kenya, Burundi and Tanzania, rallying his colleague to support the former Kenyan foreign minister, Amina Mohamed for the job. “Reference is made to the letter of His Excellency Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda and chairperson of the summit of EAC Heads of State, addressed to his EAC counterparts and proposing that East African Community endorses the candidature of the Republic of Kenya to the post of Director of the World Trade Organisation through exchange of letters,” said Vincent Biruta, the foreign affairs minister of Rwanda in a letter to his EAC colleagues. “Reference is also made to the favorable responses received from all member states of the East African Community on the above request to support the candidature of the Republic of Kenya to the post of Director of the World Trade Organisation. In this regard, I would like to inform you that Ambassador Amina C. Mohamed is endorsed as the candidate of the East African Community to the post of Director General of the World Trade Organisation,” he added.
