Garowe (PP News Dedk)  —  Kaalo, a Garowe-based NGO, conducted a two-day, UNHCR-funded training on sexual and gender-based violence for forty members of the Ethiopian and Yemeni refugees in the administrative capital of Puntland State.

The training focused on types on violence that children and women might suffer and how Puntland State laws serve to prevent incidence  of sexual and gender-based violence against women and children. Malyun Mohamud Yusuf, a senior office from Kaalo, urged trainees to make a better use of the knowledge they gained from the training.

Puntland State hosts Yemeni and Ethiopian refugees. The trainees learned, among other topics, information about service delivery in Puntland and how government institutions respond to violence against women and children.

Denial of services is one form of violence that women and children may suffer. According to UNHCR, “sexual and gender-based violence  is a violation of human rights. It denies the human dignity of the individual and hurts human development.”  Trainees thanked UNHCR and Kaalo, the implementing partner, for organising the training  in format conducive to learning and applying the knowledge.
