Saalax Posted July 2, 2019 Somaliland region: Foreign Workers Physically Assualted By Locals 2nd Jul, 2019 Somaliland: Foreign Workers Physically Assualted By Locals Some foreign workers in Berbera, who according to sources are employed by DP World Berbera were assualted by an angry crowd of local inhabitants of the city. These attacks occurred after a few days of protest by former workers of the Berbera port who are angry about the continuing recruitment of foreign workers from the Indian sub-continent, in particular, Bangladesh, by DP World. These disgruntled former Berbera port workers have been protesting the loss to jobs to foreign workers, and the increasing cost of living brought about by the influx of the contracted workers and their spending power. According to informed sources within the Somaliland ministry of Labour, two companies had been granted license to recruit foreign workers by the minister, Hinda Jama. The fees paid by theses two companies, have allegedly, according to sources been deposited in to the minister’s personal account. The Somaliland Police force managed to restore some semblance of order, before the unfortunate workers suffered more serious injuries. The injured have been taken to the medical clinic operated by DP World in Berbera.
