Somali Gift giving? Is that even a thing?

I'm doing research into what gifts Somali's in the UK find hard to get hold off and would like to give to each other

  1. 1. What gifts would you buy a loved one? (e.g mum, dad, siblings, husband or wife)

    • Clothes (e.g diracs, hats, scarfs)
    • Books (e.g Somali history books, Somali language books, Somali-themed books)
    • Small quirky things (Creative note books, pens, ties
    • Celebratory gifts (cards, ballons etc)
    • Food (Muqamad, halwad, samosa etc)

Hi all,

I came across a website which talks about the benefits of giving gifts (it releases dopamine and endorphins in the brain which makes us feel good) on the Somali Gifts company website ( and wondered how many Somali's actually give gifts to each other and what these gifts are?

I would love to get your thoughts on this topic so please give me a hand and fill out the Survey attached :)!

Many thanks all!
