  3. you see my sistahs 'n brothas, muslim women have their place in history. we need to remember that the next time someone tries to say "oh, poor women, they are being oppressed" and sum 'ish like dat.
  4. Muslim women and African queens Women were instrumental in making a difference in their respective societies. By Leila Diab In the Islamic faith, a well read, educated woman is referred to as an alimah. Her religious knowledge and cultural sophistication accords her respect among her peers, as well as their acceptance of her recitation of the Quran, written poetic verses and enchanting songs. These traditional Muslim women can be traced back to Ayehsa, the beloved wife of the Prophet Mohammed (p.b.a.h) and later to Ayesha bint Talal who shared much of her knowledge of astronomy, literature and history with scholarly men during the period of the Caliphate of Damascus. In the Dar al-Islam of the 20th century, the well known Egyptian singer, Um Khulthoum, better known as the Star of the East, began her singing career as a young child by reciting or singing Quranic verses from the Quran. Muslims as well as non-Muslims were mesmerized by Um Khulthoum's Quranic verses set to music and songs. Um Khulthoum's Arabic songs such as, Hadith al roo'h (Sayings of the Soul and the Prophet) reverently captures one's conscience and the classical age of Islam and the Muslim woman. Drawing upon the presence of the diverse ethnic Arab African connections, during pre-Islamic and Islamic civilization, the intelligence and the noble glory of Great African Queens became successfully visible social, economic and political forces. For example, Nigerian Queen Amina from 1588-1589 chose to learn military skills from warriors. Her military achievements brought her great wealth and power. During her 34-year reign she expanded the Nigerian province of Zazzua to its largest size ever. Her main focus was not on the annexation of neighboring lands but on forcing local leaders to accept vassal status and permit the Hausa traders of Nigeria safe passage. Also Queen Amina is credited with popularizing the earthen city wall fortifications, which later became characteristic of Hausa city-states. As a true warrior, she had ordered the building of defense walls around each military camp that she had established. Many of these protective walls are still in existence today. Queen Kemut, better known as Queen Cleopatra of the ancient land of Egypt, (69-30 BC), came to power at the young age of seventeen and is one of the most popular of the seven Egyptian queens of ancient times. She was instrumental in making Egypt the number one super power during her reign as queen. According to Egyptian scholars, Queen Cleopatra spoke many languages. Corruption, greed and betrayal ended her reign as Queen of Egypt. She chose suicide over her capture by the Roman army. Ironically, there are many African Queens that have been either ignored or simply erased by modern historians. However, one such story about a beautiful and powerful African woman is Makeda, the Queen of Sheba (960 BC). In the nation of Ethiopia that was once known as Nubia, Kush, Axum and Sheba it also had many beautiful and powerful queens of Ethiopia. Makeda, the Queen of Sheba was the symbol of beauty, (960 BC) wealth, and deep spiritual wisdom. Many of the ancient Queens of Africa were warriors who were involved in the process of building states and nations to serve the needs of their societies. As warriors, they were in a position to eliminate people who were cruel and corrupt influences in their societies. In exercising their power, they took control of resolving economic problems, centralized their power in order to increase population growth and promoted domestic and external relations with other regions. African Queens and Muslim women have earned a significant place in history. They are women who were instrumental in making a difference in their respective societies by exerting their personal commands with intelligence and a leap of faith. The spotlight continues to shine on their place in history.
  5. Does this trigger any lights? when is everyone going to open their eyes and see what the hell is going on with this son of country who wants to be the world police and eliminate the powers of the middle east? errr..this eats away at me
  6. The American Crusades: Preamble Nine centuries after the First Crusade, American troops have reached and entered Baghdad, but have yet to conquer the hearts or minds of the Iraqi people. Will it take Americans long to reach the level of disillusion of their original European counterparts asks Ben Tanosborn. For some historians, Western Europe came of age in medieval times as the result of unexpected successes achieved by the first armed pilgrimage to the Holy Land: the First Crusade. At the very least, such epic undertaking had a profound effect in eroding some aspects of feudalism. Nine centuries later, America, too, is being asked to come of age. Ideologue followers of canonic neo-conservatism, well entrenched in the Bush administration, want these United States to exert hegemony in the world, starting with the Middle East. How? By establishing a military foothold in the very cradle of human civilization under the guise of self-defense (WMD), combating terrorism (Al Qaeda links) or bringing democracy to the region. Take your pick, one or all. In 1095, Pope Urban II assembled a council of bishops and abbots, with a sprinkling of important knights, and gave at Clermont in Auvergne (France) the speech of his life. Vividly, he told the gathering how the Seljuk Turks had desecrated and polluted the altars of the Church, circumcised Christians and cut open their bellies… with an endless litany of loathsome practices. The inspiration for the crusades was at that moment born with the battle cry of Deus vult! (God wills it!). Nine centuries later, President Bush II, without the eloquence of Urban, is also granted by Congress the power to conduct a “holy war,” a war against Iraq, a rogue nation; a vertex in a triangle of evil; a menace to its neighbors and the US; a country led by a ruler despised by his dad. The battle cry this time was Novem úndecim! (Nine eleven!) … although many cynical critics prefer the battle cry of Oleum indigeat! (Oil requires it!) The start of the crusades finds all Europe inebriated with naïve Christianity and ready to follow the lead of the pope blindly and trustfully, rendering the close of the 11th century in Europe as a time of ignorant and confiding men without an iota of skepticism. With an unquestioning following, and a request for help from Alexis Comnenus, the emperor of Byzantium, Urban was ready to give his blessing to the first expedition against the Moslem world, not a menacing force to Christianity but a scapegoat for the papacy. Nine centuries later, President Bush rallies Americans around the flag with lie after lie (… let’s stop politely calling them exaggerations!) until Americans had surrendered the essence of civilized men: their ability to question and reason. With an unquestioning citizenry, and an ongoing helping hand for Ariel Sharon, the “other Judeo-Christian emperor,” Bush gave his blessing to the invasion of Iraq, not a menacing force to its neighbors or the US, but a nation ruled by a cruel dictator that could easily become America’s scapegoat. Both the papacy and the nobles throughout Christendom saw this quest, the Crusades, as a way of combining religious interests with secular and military enterprises. A way, they thought, for Europeans to expand their reaches to the Outremer (beyond the seas). A way, as far as Pope Urban was concerned, to unify the Greek Church with the Latin Church, and find a cure for the existing schism. Nine centuries later, both the Bush administration and its enmeshed corporate interests see this crusade as a way of combining political interests with commercial and military enterprises. A way to show the world a decisive America: an unchallenged superpower. A way for Bush to purge every socio-economic aspect in the country… make them conform to predatory, Darwinian views of social justice. It took more than three years for the crusaders to reach, siege and conquer Jerusalem. Then, seven score of years fighting battles and much disillusion saw the transformation of ignorant Europeans into a far more civilized population. Nine centuries later, American troops have reached and entered Baghdad, but have yet to conquer the hearts or minds of the Iraqi people. Will it take Americans long to reach the level of disillusion of their original European counterparts? Hopefully not! Enlightenment should come soon, be it the moral or economic route… or an election barely a year off. Hegel hit a bull’s-eye when he proclaimed that “peoples and governments never have learned anything from history”. An even more difficult task when those at the helm of government have never even read a history book. Ben Tanosborn

  8. The Death of the Black Woman While struggling with the reality of being a human instead of a myth, the strong black woman passed away. Medical sources say she died of natural causes, but those who knew her know she died from being silent when she should have been screaming, smiling when she should have been raging, from being sick and not wanting anyone to know because her pain might inconvenience them. She died from an overdose of other people clinging to her when she didn`t even have energy for herself. She died from loving men who didn`t love themselves and could only offer her a crippled reflection. She died from raising children alone. She died from the lies her grandmother told her mother and her mother told her about life, men & racism. She died from being sexually abused as a child and having to take that truth everywhere she went every day of her life, exchanging the humiliation for guilt and back again. She died from asphyxiation, coughing up blood from secrets she kept trying to burn away instead of allowing herself the kind of nervous breakdown she was entitled to, but only white girls could afford. She died from being responsible, because she was the last rung on the ladder and there was no one under her she could dump on. The strong black woman is dead. She died from being a mother at 15 and a grandmother at 30 and an ancestor at 45. She died from being dragged down and sat upon by un-evolved women posing as sisters and friends. She died from tolerating Mr. Pitiful, just to have a man around the house. She died from sacrificing herself for everybody and everything when what she really wanted to do was be a singer, a dancer, or some magnificent other. She died from lies of omission because she didn`t want to bring the black man down. She died from tributes from her counterparts who should have been matching her efforts instead of showering her with dead words and empty songs. She died from myths that would not allow her to show weakness without being chastised by the lazy and hazy. She died from hiding her real feelings until they became hard and bitter enough to invade her womb and breasts like angry tumors. She died from always lifting something from heavy boxes to refrigerators all by herself. The strong black woman is dead. She died from never being enough of what men wanted, or being too much for the men she wanted. She died from being too black and died again for not being black enough. She died from being misinformed about her mind, her body & the extent of her royal capabilities. She died from knees pressed too close together because respect was never part of the foreplay that was being shoved at her. She died from loneliness in birthing rooms and aloneness in abortion centers. She died in bathrooms with her veins busting open with self-hatred and neglect. And sometimes when she refused to die, when she just refused to give in she was killed by the lethal images of blonde hair, blue eyes and flat butts, being rejected by the OJ.`s, the Quincy`s, the Cuba`s & the Kobe`s. Sometimes, she was stomped to death by racism & sexism, executed by hi-tech ignorance while she carried the family in her belly, the community on her head, and the race on her back! The strong black woman is dead! Or is she? I know I`m not!

  15. Salaam, Bismillah, my goodness..is dis what our country has come to? To ban what Allah has ordered for women to wear? How could they stoop to dis level, so what if rebels are wearing veils? they need to take more pre-cautions 'n stop messin' with the religion. Just by "banning" the veil, they have sinned from the almighty in more ways than one...
