    I don't know about think_tank's math but it has been proven in a recent study that girls are really meaner then boys.

     

    And it starts early.

    May 7, 2005 Salt Lake City(AP) Meanness in girls can start when they still are toddlers, a Brigham Young University study found.

     

    It found that girls as young as 3 or 4 will use manipulation and peer pressure to get what they want.

     

    "It could range from leaving someone out to telling their friends not to play with someone to saying, 'I'm not going to invite you to my birthday party,"' said Craig Hart, study co-author and professor of marriage, family and human development at BYU. "Some kids are really adept at being mean and nasty."

     

    They regularly exclude others and threaten to withdraw friendship when they don't get their way.

     

    The "mean girls" are highly liked by some and strongly disliked by others. They are socially skilled and popular but can be manipulative and subversive if necessary. They are feared as well as respected.

     

    The study is the first to link relational aggression and social status in preschoolers. It appears in the current issue of the journal Early Education and Development. David Nelson and Clyde Robinson of BYU are the other authors.

     

    Researchers have long known that adolescents, particularly girls, engage in this sort of behavior, called relational aggression, to maintain their social status.

     

    In fact, a number of books and movies have come out recently exploring this phenomenon, including the best-selling "Queen Bees and Wannabes" and the movie "Mean Girls."

     

    "But it is striking that these aggressive strategies are already apparent ... in preschool," Nelson said. "Preschoolers appear to be more sophisticated in their knowledge of social behaviors than credit is typically given them."

     

    Hart said other research has found that about 17 percent to 20 percent of preschool and school-age girls display such behavior. It also shows up in boys, but much less frequently.

     

    "The typical mantra is that boys are more aggressive than girls, but in the last decade we've learned that girls can be just as aggressive as boys, just in different ways," he said.

     

    The researchers asked 328 preschool children to rate their peers.

     

    They asked which children were most likely to start fights, which were most popular and which were most physically aggressive.

     

    The surveys found that even in preschool, a social hierarchy exists.

     

    "You have popular kids, you have average kids, and you have kids (whom) others don't like to play with. Then there are some kids who just fly below the radar," Hart said.

     

    Other research at BYU has shown that physically and relationally aggressive children are more likely to have parents who discipline with psychological control and manipulation, withdrawing love, avoiding eye contact and laying guilt trips on the kids.

     

    "With relational aggression, we are early on in trying to tease apart these relationships," Hart said.

     

    One thing researchers do know is that childhood slights can have lasting impacts.

     

    Hart said the study may help teachers and parents key into relational aggression and the psychological and emotional trauma it can cause. Just as they do with physical aggression, adults need to monitor such behavior and help children recognize the harm it can cause.

     

    "We've done studies showing that reasoning with children, not just one time but taking lots of opportunities to reason with them about how their behavior is affecting others, can help diminish it," Hart said.

    I don't think Islamic thinking has stagnated. And even if it has, that’s not really a major problem. Ideas stagnate when they are not being applied to new situations. Once they are applied to new situations, it does not take much for ideas to revive and thrive.

     

    What has stagnated is the economic and industrial growth of Muslim societies as compared with other societies. As a result Muslims are very weak and their societies dysfunctional. But things are changing

     

    Let’s not confuse the two!

     

    Also, in the end Islam is all about an individual and his/her creator and sustainer. While the situation of a man or a group may change, the route to salvations always stays the same.

     

    We don’t really need to reinterpret our deen, we just need to trust in God, organize ourselves, work hard, persevere, be patient, and do all that is required to change our condition.

    I would be worry of anyone that wants to 'reform' Islam but does not care about improving the daily lives of Muslims. I think that's where the real reform is need; in the daily condition of Muslims.

     

    It's a fact that Muslims are among the poorest and least educated people. Yet they love God and worship God more then anyother people. So why does Mr. Sardar want to change their religions (which has no problems), yet he says nothing about the condition of their lives?

    This guy is another one of those people that blame everything problem any Muslim has on Islam. All Muslims aren’t the same and all their problems aren’t the same.

     

    This guy thinks the problem all Muslims face is Islam.

     

    The problems effecting some muslim societies is not with Islam, it’s that they don’t follow Islamic principles in their lives.

     

    “Serious rethinking within Islam is long overdue. Muslims have been comfortably relying, or rather falling back, on age-old interpretations for much too long.

     

    This is why we feel so painful in the contemporary world, so uncomfortable with modernity. Scholars and thinkers have been suggesting for well over a century that we need to make a serious attempt at Ijtihad, at reasoned struggle and rethinking, to reform Islam.â€

     

    I think that’s missing the point.

     

    Take the Somali people for example. I think the fundamental problems facing Somali society can be solved by apply the most basic and elementary Islamic ideals. One of example, which I think if it was applied would have greatly improved my life and the life of my family and countless other Somali is the principle of not killing other people and loot their property, another is that social interaction be governed by rule of law and justice. The situation of the Somali people would be greatly improved by applying basic Islamic principle.

     

    “Yet, ijtihad is one thing Muslim societies have singularly failed to undertake. Why?â€

     

    We are not even following the most elementary principles, how can we be pursuing issues that require Ijtihad?

     

    I ask, what are the issues which we face that require new ideas which are not a symptom of our neglecting fundamental Islamic principles?

    How dare you Mr. Sardar! Everywhere I look in the world, I see problems which have their root in the failure to apply Islamic principles.

    What are problem for which Islam is not giving him an answer? What is that he needs to reinterpret?

     

    What pressing issue of social which requires Ijtihad is causing us to “feel so painful in the contemporary world, so uncomfortable with modernity†Mr. Sardar?

     

    And he says “From the subtle beauty of a perennial challenge to construct justice through mercy and compassion, we get mechanistic formulae fixated with the extremes repeated by people convinced they have no duty to think for themselves because all questions have been answered for them by the classical `ulamas, far better men long dead. And because everything carries the brand name of Islam, to question it, or argue against it, is tantamount to voting for sin.†What things which carry the ‘band name of Islam’ is he talking about?

    This is really very disheartening. I offer my condolences to all the victims, their families and all those affected by those tragic crimes.

     

    I hope all our SOL friends are safe and sound.

     

    I remember the day of 9/11, I was only up the streets from the Pentagon and at the Pentagon train station that morning as I commuted to work. Some of my coworkers actually witnessed the attack; it was a struggle to get back home, all the buses and streets were clogged with panicked people.

     

    These repulsive acts can never be justified.
