At least twice in recent years the militants have flown unmanned drones over northern Israel, an area they spent much of the day blasting with rocket fire. For, after the arrest of 17 Canadian Muslims on “terrorism†charges, the Toronto Globe and Mail and, to a slightly lesser extent, the National Post, have indulged in an orgy of finger-pointing that must reduce the chances of any fair trial and, at the same time, sow fear in the hearts of the country’s more than 700,000 Muslims. In fact, if I were a Canadian Muslim right now, I’d already be checking the airline timetables for a flight out of town. Or is that the purpose of this press campaign? First, the charges. Even a lawyer for one of the accused has talked of a plot to storm the Parliament in Ottawa, hold MPs hostage and chop off the head of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Without challenging the “facts†or casting any doubt on their sources — primarily the Royal Canadian Mounted Police or Canada’s leak-dripping Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) — reporters have told their readers that the 17 were variously planning to blow up Parliament, CSIS’s headquarters, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and sundry other targets. Every veiled and chadored Muslim woman relative of the accused has been photographed and their pictures printed, often on front pages. “Home-grown terrorists†has become theme of the month — even though the “terrorists†have yet to stand trial. They were in receipt of “fertilizersâ€, we were told, which could be turned into explosives. When it emerged that Canadian police officers had already switched the “fertilizers†for a less harmful substance, nobody followed up the implications of this apparent “stingâ€. A Buffalo radio station down in the US even announced that the accused had actually received “explosivesâ€. Bingo: Guilty before trial. Of course, the Muslim-bashers have laced this nonsense with the usual pious concern for the rights of the accused. “Before I go on, one disclaimer,†purred the Globe and Mail’s Margaret Wente. “Nothing has been proved and nobody should rush to judgment.†Which, needless to say, Wente then went on to do in the same paragraph. “The exposure of our very own home-grown terrorists, if that’s what the men aspired to be, was both predictably shocking and shockingly predictable.†And just in case we missed the point of this hypocrisy, Wente ended her column by announcing that “Canada is not exempt from home-grown terrorismâ€. Angry young men are the tinderbox and Islamism is the match. The country will probably have better luck than most at “putting out the fireâ€, she adds. But who, I wonder, is really lighting the match? For a very unpleasant — albeit initially innocuous — phrase has now found its way into the papers. The accused 17 — and, indeed their families and sometimes the country’s entire Muslim community — are now referred to as “Canadian-bornâ€. Well, yes, they are Canadian-born. But there’s a subtle difference between this and being described as a “Canadian†— as other citizens of this vast country are in every other context. And the implications are obvious; there are now two types of Canadian citizen: The Canadian-born variety (Muslims) and Canadians (the rest). If this seems finicky, try the following sentence from the Globe and Mail’s front page on Tuesday, supposedly an eyewitness account of the police arrest operation: “Parked directly outside his ... office was a large, gray, cube-shaped truck and, on the ground nearby, he recognized one of the two brown-skinned young men who had taken possession of the next door rented unit...†Come again? Brown-skinned? What in God’s name is this outrageous piece of racism doing on the front page of a major Canadian daily? What is “brown-skinned†supposed to mean — if it is not just a revolting attempt to isolate Muslims as the “other†in Canada’s highly multicultural society? I notice, for example, that when the paper obsequiously refers to Toronto’s police chief and his reportedly brilliant cops, he is not referred to as “white-skinned†(which he most assuredly is). Amid this swamp, Canada’s journalists are managing to soften the realities of their country’s new military involvement in Afghanistan. More than 2,000 troops are deployed around Kandahar in active military operations against Taleban insurgents. They are taking the place of US troops, who will be transferred to fight even more Muslims insurgents in Iraq. Canada is thus now involved in the Afghan war — those who doubt this should note the country has already shelled out $1.8bn in “defense spending†in Afghanistan and only $500m in “additional expendituresâ€, including humanitarian assistance and democratic renewal (sic) — and, by extension, in Iraq. In other words, Canada has gone to war in the Middle East. None of this, according to the Canadian foreign minister, could be the cause of Muslim anger at home, although Jack Hooper — the CSIS chief who has a lot to learn about the Middle East but talks far too much — said a few days ago that “we had a high threat profile (in Canada) before Afghanistan. In any event, the presence of Canadians and Canadian forces there has elevated that threat somewhat.†I read all this on a flight from Calgary to Ottawa this week, sitting just a row behind Tim Goddard, his wife Sally and daughter Victoria, who were chatting gently and smiling bravely to the crew and fellow passengers. In the cargo hold of our aircraft lay the coffin of Goddard’s other daughter, Nichola, the first Canadian woman soldier to be killed in action in Afghanistan. The next day, he scattered sand on Nichola’s coffin at Canada’s national military cemetery. A heartrending photograph of him appeared in the Post — but buried away on Page 6. And on the front page? A picture of British policemen standing outside the Bradford home of a Muslim “who may have links to Canadaâ€. Allegedly, of course.

My only concern is that they courts will not allow all the clans, armed or otherwise into the decesion making process. The TFG does not need to create new tensions, what for? There is a federal charter, let the people decide... They need to concentrate on security and building up the armed forces, not to fight anyone who wants to bring viable change.

Asked whether Bush had agreed to a request from Fouad Siniora, the Lebanese prime minister, to rein in Israel, Tony Snow, the White House spokesman, said that the president "is not going to make military decisions for Israel." The Lebanon violence is the fiercest since 1996 when Israel launched a 17-day blitz on Hezbollah strongholds in the south, four years before its troops pulled out of Lebanon. Israeli aircraft rocketed runways at Beirut's already closed international airport and bombed a flyover just to the south. Israeli warplanes blasted the main Beirut-Damascus highway overnight, tightening an air, sea and land blockade of Lebanon, and bombed targets in Beirut's teeming Shi'ite Muslim suburbs, killing three people and wounding 40, security sources said. Air strikes in south Lebanon killed five more people. Their deaths brought to 66 the number of people, almost all civilians, killed in Lebanon in the past three days. Hezbollah rocket attacks on northern Israel have now killed four Israelis and wounded more than 150. The Israeli prime minister's office said such salvos "cannot and will not be allowed to continue". Snow told reporters that Bush had spoken to Lebanon's prime minister among other Middle East leaders. He said that Bush believed the Israelis had the right to protect themselves, but should avoid civilian casualties and damage.

Hezbollah declares war on Israel Saturday 15 July 2006, 0:29 Makka Time, 21:29 GMT Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the chief of Hezbollah group, has pledged open war on Israel after it bombed his Beirut home on Friday in a dramatic expansion of the latest Israeli assault. "You wanted an open war. You will get an open war," Nasrallah said in a telephone message broadcast live on Hezbollah television after the attack. He said an Israeli navy ship was ablaze off the coast of Beirut. Lebanese security sources said two rockets had hit it. A Lebanese security source said the warship, which had bombed Lebanon earlier in the day, suffered considerable damage and Al Jazeera television reported four Israeli troops were missing at sea. The Israeli Haaretz news Website also said the ship was seriously damaged, although the army had said earlier that an attack from the shore had caused only light damage. "Look at it burn," Nasrallah declared in his address. "It will sink and along with it dozens of Zionist soldiers." Celebratory gunfire erupted in the Lebanese capital and drivers honked their horns after Nasrallah's speech. The Syrian- and Iranian-backed Islamist group, which wants to trade its captives for prisoners held in Israel, fired more rockets across the frontier, killing an Israeli woman and child. Israeli air strikes destroyed Nasrallah's apartment building and a main Hezbollah office in southern Beirut. Hezbollah said Nasrallah and his family and bodyguards were safe. An Israeli army spokeswoman would not say if the intention had been to kill Nasrallah. "We targeted the headquarters of Hezbollah in southern Beirut. We attacked two structures that are used by the leadership of Hezbollah," she said

Hezbollah: We're Ready for 'Open War' BEIRUT, Lebanon Jul 14, 2006 (AP)— Hezbollah's leader said Friday that his group is ready for "open war" with Israel, and as his words were broadcast, guerrillas attacked an Israeli warship that had been firing missiles into southern Beirut. Speaking defiantly in an audiotape on Hezbollah's Al-Manar television less than an hour after missiles struck his headquarters and home, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah addressed Israelis and said they must take responsibility for their actions. "You wanted an open war, and we are heading for an open war," he said. "We are ready for it." "The surprises that I have promised you will start now. Now in the middle of the sea, facing Beirut, the Israeli warship that has attacked the infrastructure, people's homes and civilians look at it burning," Nasrallah said. "It will sink and with it will sink scores of Israeli Zionist soldiers. This is just the beginning," he warned. Al-Jazeera reported the Israeli military was searching for four missing troops from the ship. Israeli officials would not immediately comment on the Arab broadcaster's report; an army spokesman said earlier the ship had apparently been struck by a rocket but that the damage was minor and no one was injured. Immediately after Nasrallah's message was broadcast, Arab television showed nighttime video of what it said was the Israeli warship burning. But the video was unclear. The audiotape came shortly after Israeli missiles struck Hezbollah headquarters and Nasrallah's house in southern Beirut. His comments, however, apparently were prerecorded, and Nasrallah did not refer to the missile attack on his offices and residence. His words were greeted with heavy celebratory gunfire that rang out across the Lebanese capital. The Hezbollah leader also repeated a threat to hit the Israeli coastal city of Haifa and other towns farther south. "To Haifa? Believe me, beyond and beyond Haifa." "Our homes will not be the only ones to be destroyed, our children will not be the only ones to die. … Those days are over, I promise you. You (Israelis) must take responsibility for what your government has done," he added. "You will soon discover how ****** and foolish your new government is." Nasrallah called on the Lebanese people to be patient and steadfast. "I promise you a new victory, just as I always have," he said.

Arab foreign ministers are to hold an emergency meeting on the crisis tomorrow. Qatar’s First Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister, HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor al-Thani, will lead his country’s delegation to the meeting. Meanwhile, Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa blamed Israel for the escalation and warned of “chaos†sweeping the region. “Israel is behind all that is happening,†Moussa told reporters. “Leaving matters as they are will lead to big chaos in the region.†Moussa said Arab states would take “unified steps†over one of the most serious regional crises since the second Palestinian Intifada erupted in September 2000. Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit, who was rushed to Damascus on Wednesday to deliver a message to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, also warned that the situation risked spiralling out of control. “The rhetorical escalation by all parties threatens to provoke an explosion of the situation and to herald a dangerous phase for the region,†he told reporters. Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora said he called a number of world leaders for help, insisting that Beirut was not responsible for the acts of the Damascus and Hezbollah. Saad Hariri, leader of the anti-Syrian majority in Lebanon, made an unscheduled stopover in Egypt on his way back from China and went straight into crisis talks with President Hosni Mubarak. Mubarak and Jordan’s King Abdullah II also called each other to discuss “the dangerous escalation caused by Israel’s continued military operations in Gaza and the exchange of fire between Hezbollah and the Israeli army.†The two leaders stressed “the need to act,†the official Petra news agency reported. Their two countries are the only ones in the Arab world to have peace treaties with Israel. The Jordanian government issued a statement condemning “any act harming the Palestinian people and its cause or Lebanon and its sovereignty.†Kuwait has stronger words, with Parliament Speaker Jassem al-Khorafi slamming the “excessive use of force†threatening the entire region.
