  2. Escape from Somaliland HARGEISA, 11 August 2009 (Somalilandpress) – Xorriyo Airways, which ran flights from Dubai to Berbera in Somaliland, has collapsed. I found this out the hard way. I soon became one of more than 600 people stranded in Somaliland. At 7.40 pm one night the airline office phoned to say the flight had been ‘delayed until further notice’ and if someone did not bring the ticket to the office by 8pm it would become void and there would be no entitlement to a refund. This is Hargeisa where taxis in the suburbs are hard to come by and buses certainly can’t get you from near Mansoor Hotel in Jigjigayar to the downtown city center in less than 20 minutes. My only chance was to get someone who lived near the office to go and negotiate in the meantime. An official source at Xorriyyo confirmed the next day the airline had collapsed and the priority was to get passengers transferred onto other airlines. The trouble with that useful information was that very few people had been told. Most passengers including those who had already booked their holidays from around the world are still none the wiser. The source alleged that Xorriyo was owned by two cousins who split the company assets causing the airline to go bust. At the peak of the holiday season hundreds of people are stranded in Somaliland. They will probably have to ask relatives and friends to wire them money via Dahabshiil in order to buy new tickets. Dahabshiil money transfer is the unofficial banking system amongst Somalis. In Somaliland I learned people have to fight for everything. Being obsolete and insisting I had a connecting flight to Doha which I could not miss under any circumstances – seemed to do the trick. This was true, I did have another flight to catch, but if I had not insisted, I may still be there now. I was fortunate to been transferred to Osob Airline but this meant another hot bumpy bus ride to Berbera. When I got there I heard my flight to Dubai was still stuck in Mogadishu. When it arrived it was carrying several hundred desperate refugees. The airport officials said that they often have injured people with bullets still lodged in them, arriving from Mogadishu. Although it sounds rough it is a great way to see Somali landscapes and mountains. Several small villages line the way as well as the routine police checkpoints. In one small village we were hailed to stop by a man who was allowed to board the bus and asking for money. He said his name was ‘Ali- Gaabe’ (Ali the Dwarf) and that we should give him money so he could pray for our safe journey. He was a dwarf and people laughed at his audacity and his sense of humour so they paid him and I watched him hailed the second bus in our convoy to make his quick buck. Xorriyo airline is registered UK company but has not yet officially gone into administration or declared bankruptcy. The travel agent I booked with in London also confirmed its collapse and said I was very lucky to get out as several hundred people are literally stranded there. My thoughts are with them but desperate looks on the faces of the refugees from Mogadishu will haunt me for a long time. Despite waiting three hours for the plane to arrive, I wish I stayed at the airport for just a bit longer. Long enough to hear the stories those families had tell and what horrors they had escaped. 4. Somaliland: Rayale impeachment gains traction in parliament 05 August 2009 | News Hargeisa, Somaliland (Somaliland Globe)- Representative Dr. Ahmed Abdi Kinjande has delivered Tuesday during a parliamentary debate an uncharacteristically stinging attack on the National Electoral Commission (NEC) of Somaliland over its recent decision to abandon the voter registration list, which he described as tantamount to “high treason”. The decision by the NEC to consign the voter registration list into the dustbin is contrary to the letter and spirit of Somaliland’ Electoral Law and flies in the face of the tripartite agreement signed by the major political parties including president Rayale’ ruling party, UDUB, analysts believe. Dr. Kijande (Kul-BG) congratulated the leaders of the two houses of Somaliland’s parliament for their high moral courage and patriotic duty to condemn the decision by the NEC to abandon voter registration list as well as president Rayale’s unilateral decision to expel Interpeace, the agency responsible for the democratisation and electoral process and representative of donor countries to Somaliland. Dr. Kijande said such actions, particularly the decision to kick all donor countries out of the country, would only serve to conspire against Somaliland’s quest for international recognition and would pose existential threat to Somaliland at a time the country desperately need more friends. “The president does not seem to grasp that a free and fair election is one based on the use of voter registration list,” said Dr. Kijande. Dr. Kijande also lashed out at Rayale for his tragic failure to resolve the simmering tension in El-Bardaleh, where four innocent men lost their lives last month following the eruption of violence between the president’s clan and another clan. “I have yet to hear from the president as to what he will do about the tension prevailing in El-Bardaleh area,” Dr. Kijande said during the parliamentary debate. Dr. Kijande called upon fellow MPs to impeach and remove Rayale from office. Representative Ibrahim Dhaadheere (UDUB-OW), former Speaker of the House, not only concurred the idea of impeachment and removal of Dahir Rayale from office but also advised president Rayale to step down willingly or face impeachment. Representative Mohammed Nur Arrale Duur (UDUB-OW) called for the immediate impeachment of Rayale while Representative Farhan Mohamed Ali (UDUB-EA) said, “President Dahir Rayale Kahin and Jama Mohamed Omer, chairman of the NEC, had jointly agreed to overthrow the Republic of Somaliland”. Both should be impeached, he added. Former health minister and head of the UDUB party reformists, Abdillahi Hussein Iman Darawal, called president Rayale’s unilateral decision to expel donor countries “high treason”. The two leaders of Somaliland’s House of Parliament also condemned president Rayale’s decision to expel donor countries. There are growing calls for the impeachment of Dahir Rayale Kahin within Somaliland parliament particularly from UDUB party ranks. A high-voltage acrimony between president Dahir Rayale Kahin and NEC on one side, and the opposition political parties and the two Houses of parliament on the other side, over the abandonment of registration list and subsequent expulsion of Interpeace from the country continues to prevail in the political landscape of Somaliland. 5. Hargeisa, Somaliland (Somaliland Globe)- Amidst confusion, the National Electoral Commission (NEC) of Somaliland has announced on Sunday that the campaign of the presidential election scheduled to take place on 27 September will officially start on Monday, 3rd August. The two main opposition parties KULMIYE and UCID however immediately ruled out to participate in the forthcoming presidential election because the president and the “highly partisan” NEC decided together that the election would go ahead without the use of voter list, which will mean everyone and all ages can vote. “We will not participate in the presidential election until the issue of the voter list is resolved,” Keise Hassan Ige, the Secretary General of KULMIYE party told the BBC radio, fearing lack of voter list will almost certainly lead to the election being rigged by the government. The second largest political party, UCID, also issued an official statement in which it said it “will not participate in any election whatsoever without a voter list”. When, on 27 July, the final Voter list was produced by the Technical Team of Interpeace, the agency responsible for the digital voter registration process, which was later kicked out of the country, the president immediately rejected the production of that voter list, saying it was not conducted in the spirit of the law and in the best interest of the country- an explanation rejected by opposition political parties. “The election will go ahead without the need for a voter list,” president Rayale told the VOA radio. President Rayale however reneged on an earlier agreement signed by his ruling party, UDUB, calling for all political parties to honour the production of the final list by Interpeace. The decision therefore by the Electoral Commission and the president, which calls for the election to take place without the use of voter list is contrary to the spirit of Somaliland’s Electoral Law. President Rayale made it unequivically clear that his decision is final. President Rayale’s expulsion of Interpeace from the country was roundly condemned by all political parties and civil society groups as well as the leaders of the two Houses of Somaliland’s parliament.
  6. U.S. Embassy, Nairobi, Kenya Press Release August 3, 2009 U.S. Dismayed with Somaliland Developments The United States government is profoundly dismayed with the recent developments in Somaliland, particularly the decision by President Riyale and the National Electoral Commission to discard the recently-completed voter registration list. We believe the list forms a sound basis for use in the elections scheduled for September 27. We have directly urged President Riyale to reconsider his decision.

  8. London, UK, July 25, 2009 – President Rayale has been left isolated as domestic and international condemnation and pressure mounts on his regime over the continued detention without trial of two Radio Horyaal reporters and the closure of local television station, Horn Cable TV (HCTV). The two radio journalists, director of Radio Horyaal, Mohamed Osman Mire and news editor Ahmed Saleban Dhuhul have been refused bail and are still being held in a cell at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for the second week running. The two were arrested on the direct order of Somaliland president, Dahir Rayale Kahin, for allegedly broadcasting ‘false information’ inciting violence between the president’s clan and another clan that led to the death of four people. In the meantime, the Attorney General shut down HCTV for airing footage of the same news. “It is a shameless regime manned by shameless individuals who have no moral compass. The detention of these journalists simply suggests that Rayale is a law unto himself and no longer needs a court’s permission to throw journalists into jail,” said Mohammed Yonis Awale, the chairman of the independent Radio Horyaal Committee. According to a statement issued by the US Embassy in Nairobi, the US government condemned the recent arrests and called for the immediate release of the journalists while urging at the same time that Horn Cable TV be allowed to resume broadcasting without impediment during this important, pre-election period. In a July 17 statement, the Paris-based media watchdog group Reporters Without Borders was outraged by the arrest of the two journalists and the closure of HCTV station in Somaliland and called for “the international community should help Somali journalists, who are exposed to enormous risks.” The Vienna-based International Press Institute and The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) also condemned the arrests not to mention the tidal wave of condemnations from the Somaliland Diaspora. Radio Horyaal had an interview on Wednesday with one of the elders who attended a meeting with president Rayale on the El-Bardaleh issue, featuring even more embarrassing revelations about the president’s failure to act upon the ruling of the House of Elders’ subcommittee. President Rayale dismissed the subcommittee’s ruling as outrageous and branded members of House of Elders “enemies”, according to Mohamoud Jibril Kahin who was one of the elders who attended the meeting with the President. President Rayale received various peace envoys and delegation of heavyweight elders from the other clan that hail from Gabiley, alerting him to the gravity of the situation and the urgent need to find a solution to the simmering confrontation over the disputed territory and properties. The elders of Gabiley were reportedly angry that a June ruling made by the Upper House of the Parliament, giving their clan certain land and property rights, had not yet been implemented by the President. It also emerged that long before the deadly plot was hatched from the shadows of El-Baradaleh the president was receiving a constant stream of information and intelligence reports from area and knew pretty well in advance that the situation became a tinderbox waiting to explode any moment. However, the president who found the ruling of the Upper House of the Parliament unfavorable to his clan chose to bury his head in the sand, hoping somehow that the problem will disappear and evaporate. Some analysts believe that Radio Horyaal and HCTV have been convenient scapegoat for the president’s failure to take the bull by the horns. Disseminating of propaganda against the state, incitement of violence and confusing the public opinion are routine accusations by the authorities of Somaliland to justify the closure of newspapers and TVs and detention of journalists who are not toeing the line regarding the government’s policies. 11. Somaliland Cracking Down On Independent Media – Watchdog ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AFP)–Media freedom watchdog Committee to Protect Journalists on Thursday condemned a growing crackdown on independent media by authorities of Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland. Two journalists of private Radio Horyaal were detained and a television station banned from broadcasting last week on accusation of inciting violence, the group said in a statement. “As the September elections approach, it appears the Somaliland authorities are attempting to silence critical reporting,” said Tom Rhodes, CPJ’s Africa coordinator. Somalia is one of the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists. Media houses have been routinely shut down by the authorities and many reporters, Somali and foreign, have been kidnapped by armed groups

  16. Somalia, in the Horn of Africa, has always been remote but its inaccessibility is all the greater today after nearly two decades of warfare and anarchy. While chaos continues in the south, the northern part of the former "Somali Democratic Republic" has achieved remarkable peace and stability in recent years, established its own borders and declared its independence and statehood as the Somaliland Republic - a distinct entity from the failed state in the south. Musa Hersi, a Somali émigré living in the UK, recently had the opportunity to travel in the Somaliland Republic. He came across extensive and apparently very ancient stone ruins in the central area around Ain (marked with a cross on our map), including a number of small pyramidal structures. He reports here exclusively for grahamhancock.com. I wish to make clear to the reader at the outset that I am neither an archaeologist, nor a writer about archaic civilisations. I am no authority on any particular science. I believe I can best describe myself as an enthusiast of and a keen reader about past human civilisations. I would therefore hope that any drawbacks detected in the lingo and concepts used in this article will be seen in that light. The same goes if my hypothesis about the existence of previously unexplored evidence in Somaliland is seen by some as, perhaps, farfetched. Whether my claims can be proved or otherwise can wait until further investigations are made On a private visit to Somaliland in the summer of 2005, I happened to be in a remote region called Ain for a week. During that period, I came across stone mounds and ruins, clustered along a stretch of land about 15 km long and 5 wide. As the reason for my visit was local community development, I was not able to do much work in recording what I saw there. However, I was able to reconnoitre the landscape and some of the structures involved. The following is a tentative attempt to present a picture of what I saw there, and it will be divided into three subheadings; a look at the general synopsis of the three distinct ruins; the myths and beliefs of the local people surrounding these ruins; and the challenges and difficulties threatening the future existence of these sites, which may be of immense scientific importance to the country and to the wider world. The site, which I am referring to, is located near Ainabo in eastern Somaliland. The area extends about 15km long and 5km wide. It comprises of three distinct sites starting from Badwein in the east, Halibixisay in the middle and Cayaarsalaqle in the west. The distance between the east and west points is about 15 km apart, with the site in the middle a bit closer to the western point. The area is of a predominantly gypsum rock type, and the water table is not much below the surface, with many rock wells hollowed out by water in the past aeons. The soil is a bit oily, of greyish white colour and very saline, to the extent that nomads come from distant places to transport sacks of this salty mixture (Dheged) to supplement mineral needs of their animals. As a result of these, the terrain and its soil possesses a baked-cake quality with the elements having very little effect in terms of wearing and erosion. Consequently, these sites remained preserved throughout the ages, although many of them are very fragile and crumbling. The structures comprise of mounds of piled up rocks, others built in a more structured way and tapering upwards (although flat at the top) like mini pyramids, caves and ruins of rock buildings. Badwein (big sea) This place marks the eastern corner of the area in question, and it will suffice to quote the comments of one of the first European explorers ever to venture into Somaliland, E. Sloane, who reached Badwein on 7 March 1891. He wrote the following account of what he saw there: We marched north-east to Badwein, where we found more wells, and a large tank of water, four hundred yards in circumference, with perpendicular sides forty feet deep, supposed to have been excavated in the limestone rocks by ancient Gallas [a Hamitic people of Ethiopia, also known as the Oromo, whose language is related to Somali). Ruins, which rise half smothered from among a tangle of aloes and thorn-jungle close by, cover an area of forty thousand square yards, and in some of the houses the walls are still ten feet high. E___ rode into a large house or temple, to find it two hundred feet long and one hundred feet wide, divided by a number of partition walls. They are built of limestone, much decomposed by rain, and are supposed to be the work of Gallas, but no one knows who built them. Some of the Somalis say they date back to the time of a race before the Gallas" " (Page 91) 125 years after Mr Sloane made these depictions, the site still remains the same today. Halibixisay (Camel's find) The site is named after a local well that waters the livestock of the indigenous nomadic community. Legend has it that a thirsty camel found the well by sniffing the water in the well hole from afar and guided people into it. What distinguishes this place is the concentration of mounds dotting the whole landscape of several square kilometres. These structures, with stones not piled haphazardly but built together in a more systematic way, are quite different from the occasional hilltop mounds customarily seen on all the hilly terrain of eastern Somaliland, which are mainly heaps of rock. One of the many strange mounds strewn about at Halibixisay Site. One of the many strange mounds strewn about at Halibixisay Site. One of the many strange mounds strewn about at Halibixisay Site. The sheer number of the mounds at Halibixisay is quite astounding, dotting the whole area, many of them smothered by a thickset jungle of acacia, thistle and aloe plants. Although I have not made a proper count, I estimate there are up to hundred individual mounds in that particular site. Many of these structures are literally crumbling due to their great age coupled with the impact of the elements, but a bigger threat comes from the presence in the area of army units with some heavy equipment. I have seen them remove stones for trenches and other building purposes. This vandalising and also the general impact of an army and its armoured personnel carriers and other heavy trucks towing artillery, may cause untold damage to these already very fragile ruins. Cayaar-salaqle (naked dance place) There is also a huge mound looking like a small hill with a collapsed top forming an unusual cavity. Scattered about at the mouth and inside the cave are huge rocks, chiselled and formed into rectangular and square shapes with ruler sharp sides. One would think at first glance these are the material of the ceiling of the collapsed roof of the edifice. The most interesting thing one would notice is the shape of the rocks, some of them collapsed and some still at the ceiling, which are well carved as if fashioned by the skilled hand of a mason. Local people say the cave stretches and fans out far and wide with drawings, carved stones and other manmade impressions. The masonry at the mouth of the cave and the local reports of drawings deep inside inadvertently prompted me to think this small hillock to be a buried pyramid or some other sort of mega-building. There is no doubt this is not a normal cave Residence for Jinn (spirits, demons etc). Local people avoid climbing on top of these mounds or even lingering around these sites in the belief that they are inhabited by Jinns, or bad spirits, that may cause harm to those who venture close. Children herding goats or camels are always reminded not to go near these mounds or ruins, although nobody bothers about animals grazing around them and sometimes goats can be seen climbing on top the mounds. The myth of the Jinns has clearly had a deterrent effect against human vandalism or physical destruction of these structures. Another important characteristic of the local nomadic community, in distinct contrast to practices of treasure- hunting through vandalising ancient human graves by urban people, is the absence of any grave-robbing culture (perhaps reinforced by the myth of Jinns),. Terminology The Somalis call stone mounds taallo (s), and the word has an archaic connotation. Through metaphor it implies "the thing that was there from time immemorial", suggesting a prehistoric legacy. Another name also used locally is maanlo (s). Typically this suggests a mind-boggling thing. Both names indicate that these works predate the birth of nomadic people living in the eastern Horn of Africa for thousands of years. Taallo is also used in modern Somali literature as a MEMORIAL for a revered thing or person. As we have seen, early European visitors reported these mounds were the work of Galla, a people thought to be the ancestors of certain ethnic groups in the Horn of Africa. But there are also some questions about that, with many people doubting whether these varied and complex constructions could be the work of a nomadic community, as the Gallas were supposed to be. Current challenges The site, despite its archaeological significance, has recently become a base for a military garrison and militias with a variety of armoured vehicles and other types of heavy equipment. The army is there because of border conflict between Somaliland and the North-East Somali province of Punland. The site was primarily chosen for its proximity to an all-weather road as well as the availability of water in the area. This presence of military in the site poses a unique danger to the future sustainability of these remains. Clearly something needs to be done firstly to research and map the various structures of the site; and secondly to protect the area from further degradation and loss of valuable evidence before proper archeological excavations can be made. This would need the involvement of the local community; head of army and militias in the area and the local government if managing and protecting the area is to make any significant and long-term impact. I believe that now, when this site has been rediscovered, and the new challenges and difficulties threatening it have been identified, that further action and research are justified, but due to its political isolation and other circumstances surrounding Somaliland, much needed resources for work like this cannot be raised locally. I wonder if there is any one interested to sponsor further investigation of these mysterious and archaic remains. http://www.grahamhan cock.com/forum/Hersi M1.php?p=2
  17. UDUB Diehard Supporters Switch Their Allegiance to KULMIYE Camp News that more than two dozen UDUB supporters including senior party members have switched their allegiance to Somaliland’s main opposition party, KUMLIYE, on Monday is the latest political earthquake to rattle UDUB- the ruling party of Somaliland. The defectors, who met with the leader of KULMIYE party, Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo, at an event held in Selby Centre of North London comprised mainly of diehard UDUB supporters, senior party officials and founder members of the UDUB party in the UK. They say the main reason behind their defection is that they are fed up with the callous indifference of UDUB’s leadership to address the host of problems and critical challenges facing the country and the prevalence of the widespread corruption that rendered the country’s institutions virtually dysfunctional. Notable names among those who defected to KULMIYE were included Yusuf Hersi Ahmed (famously known as Harir) who is the current treasurer of UDUB-UK, Ahmed Hassan Noor (Cunaaye), Mohammoud Yusuf Lugweyne and Abdi Hussein Iman who are all founder-members of the UDUB party in the United Kingdom. The group said they had been supporters of the UDUB party since it was founded. However, they now found themselves in a position where they could no longer support “a party that is grossly incompetent and failed to fulfill its promises”. This defection is further evidence of UDUB’s dwindling support, and confirms the bleak prospects ahead for the collapsing authority of president Rayale. Harir said: “To illustrate this point, when the president first arrived in the United Kingdom shortly after he was elected, he was enthusiastically welcomed by the people at his first public meeting held in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea where he had made a long list of promises including a promise to deliver a lean government and a root and branch reform of the judiciary. None of the promises he had made was implemented to this date.” “The president’s successive visits to the United Kingdom resulted in him not being able to face the public because of his utter failure to live up to even a tiny fraction of his election promises. He has completely squandered the public’s trust and has no longer credibility with the electorate.” For his part, Silanyo commended the patriotism and sense of responsibility shown by the group. He said Somaliland is in a downward spiral in every respect. He pointed out that Berbera port, which was the country’s main economic engine, was no longer competitive. Mismanagement, a deep-rooted corruption and unnecessarily excessive tariffs led to importers and shipping companies to avoid Berbera in favour of ports in Djibouti and Bossasso of Somalia. He said the region of Sanaag is now economically linked to the self-declared autonomous region of Puntland rather than Somaliland.
  18. Hargeisa, Jul 2 2009 (Somalilandpress) — Tempting as it is to disprove the false and generally negative images of Somaliland worldwide, which are plentiful, I find myself struggling to find a balance between writing only about positive aspects of the country, and thus overlooking some less attractive truths of this very real place, while at the same time I am hesitant to say anything that may be perceived as negative because I want to promote this country which is housing me, feeding me, and caring for my life. Ultimately I have decided to try my best to leave my (positive) biases at the door, because if I don’t expand on the aspects of Somaliland that could be improved upon, I am cheating you, not being true to myself, and also could be hurting the country. It is with these thoughts in mind that I continue to type. I will also keep posting pictures so you can see for yourself those beautiful and ugly things which I am recounting. I think you will be happy to know that I just returned from my first visit outside of Hargeisa. I spent 6 days in the “wild west” along with my co-workers, which was a great opportunity to learn more about the political and social dynamics of Somaliland and to talk openly about the elections which are scheduled to take place in September. As you may know, the elections have already been postponed and the current president (Dahir Rayaale) has been in power for seven years. The more people I talk to, the more I realize how few people trust or support the current regime for various reasons, including its lackadaisical attitude, corruption, and false promises. At the same time, Rayaale has not been causing physical harm to the people, there have been no killings or false arrests or things like that, peace is real, and so the Somaliland community at large is sitting back, afraid to disturb the peace because they know what war is. So it is a strange situation, where most people have lost faith in the government, even strongly oppose it, but they are willing to sacrifice anything—including employment, education, health services, and economic development— to preserve peace. I am not sure what this will mean for the upcoming elections, but I guess they will reveal themselves in the upcoming months. Now that I’ve put the heavy stuff out in the open, let me tell you a story. Last week I was complaining to a friend of mine that there are no girls playing sports here, and I feel like I will get fat just sitting, working, eating, and sometimes walking. He told me that was not true, that just next to my office there is a place where girls play basketball. I thought he was joking, but sure enough he took me to this club and we saw about 20 girls donned in hijabs playing basketball, really going at it, and also playing soccer on the other side of the court. I wanted to go join them but I felt too shy. My friend was insistent though, he motioned at one of the girls and she walked over and greeted us. She took me by the hand and practically dragged me into the sports club, and after a few minutes I felt happy and comfortable and even got my hands on the ball. It was great fun—we played a full game, just girls, and they thought it was so funny when I scored. I agreed to come every week to play with them, and intend to keep my word. Finally, some pictures and commentary. The first picture shows the landscape and some traditional Somali houses—or “aqal Soomaali”. Around the houses are small bushes which are prickly, and people dry their clothes on them because even strong winds do not force the clothes off of the bushes. The next picture is scenery from the drive between Borame and Baki, where there are beautiful layers of mountains and because this region gets more rain, you can see greenery and farms. There are few areas in Somaliland that support farming, and historically the population is a nomadic one, reliant mostly on cattle and grazing. In fact, the slogan for all Somalis is “nabad iyo caano” which means “peace and milk”. It is a very accurate phrase which reflects the necessities for a good life. For a foreigner the word “peace” is obvious, but why “milk”? Well, if your camels produce large quantities of milk, not only can it sustain you and also be sold, but it means the land is fertile; there is water and abundant rains. So you have enough to live off of economically and physically, and now you just need peace. In contrast to the beautiful and natural mountains, and as one person commented in my last article, it is impossible to ignore the piles of trash scattered about. One reflection of the weak government and perhaps finances is the lack of planned trash disposal or collection in Somaliland. I still feel guilty every time I litter, even though it is the only way to dispose of trash. So I included this picture of the trash mountains in Borama, which are next to a busy soccer field, in an area of stunning natural beauty. Mountains of trash around Borama It is my hope that trash collection will improve here, as it could provide a lot of jobs aside from the obvious health and environmental benefits, but I also know that I have been to other countries with the same problem, and the fact is that when you are worrying about finding employment and safety and caano, trash collection is not the first thing on your “to do” list. Finally, I included a picture of downtown Borama to give you an illustration of a different city. Both Hargeisa and Borama are constantly bustling, the restaurants don’t close until after 11pm and there are always people socializing on the streets. That’s all for now. I hope you have enjoyed reading. Until next time, Emily
  19. The KULMIYE party chairman, Ahmed Mohammed Mohamoud Silanyo, on Monday attended a dinner banquet hosted in his honour in which he was presented with honorary plaque by Ahmed Omer, mayor of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The event, sponsored by the local Somali businesses and community organisations, was attended by several traditional leaders as well as local Somali community representatives from across London. Silanyo said: “ It is an honour for me to attend this great dinner tonight and to be presented with such a gift. None of you, I think, was in this country in 1957 when as a young student I used to visit regularly Somali seafarers living in the docklands of Tower Hamlets”. “I never thought that one day, one of their children [the seafarers] will grow up to be a mayor and present me this gift [plaque]. I congratulate the mayor for becoming the first ever Somali mayor in the UK”. Silanyo has already visited several European countries and towns in the United Kingdom. With a very tight schedule, he was nevertheless able to attend dinner with Somali community members in Tower Hamlets. Tower Hamlets marked a historic occasion in May 2009 with the confirmation of Ahmed Omer as the first Somali mayor in the UK, making him the borough’s forty-fifth mayor at the age of 45.
  20. Somaliland interim President Daahir Rayaale Kaahin Hargeisa, Somaliland (Somaliland Globe)The Somaliland government is using food aid provided by WFP to shape the outcome of the upcoming presidential election planned for 27 September, sources close to the presidential palace told The Somaliland Globe. The government is distributing the food aid in selected urban and rural areas, in which the ruling party, United Peoples’ Democratic Party known by its Somali acronym UDUB, was losing the strong support it used to enjoy, in order to woo back the electorate to vote for UDUB. The failed rainy season led to a drought situation in the inland pastoral zones of Somaliland, affecting particularly those who do not receive remittances from abroad and are dependent solely for their livelihoods either on livestock or rain-fed agriculture. The opposition parties are crying foul that the government should not be distributing food but should “let independent aid agencies feed people” and the government, in turn, is demonising the opposition as a bunch of troublemakers, hurling as many accusations as possible, in hopes that some or all of them will stick, even if they’re patently contradictory. In a propoganda war like this, the government has always the upper hand because the opposition parties are deprived of free access to state TV and radio. Kulmiye party officials are expected to issue a press statement of some sort tomorrow.
