    Ya Allah!

When the whole of our generation is busy watching nude films all night, traders are bent upon interest, children are disobedient to their parents, nights are filled with alcohol and fornication, in the markets there is gambling and interest in the name of trading. Is it not surprising Allah isn't happy with us? Over 3 million people stand behind the Imam of the Ka'ba on the 27th night, and the state of the Muslims especially in Palestine, Syria and Somalia is still the same. There was a time when a group of Muslims would supplicate to Allah, it would shake his throne and angels would come down to assist them. May Allah allow us to see those days, and make us amongst those whose duas piece the heavens. Amin.
  2. Why do some Muslims feel okay about criticizing other Muslims, condemning them and scolding them with such harsh words like 'ignorant', 'bigots', 'cowards', '******', justifying it by saying: 'what they have done has nothing to do with Islam', only to say in the end: 'O non-Muslims, please forgive us'?! Do they not know or realize that one of the qualities of those who love Allah and He loves them is that they are: أذلة على المؤمنين أعزة على الكافرين "...humble towards the believers, stern towards the disbelievers..." [Qur'an 5:54] We should never be more ready to 'condemn' Muslims before we 'condemn' the disbelievers! Where is our self-dignity? It would have been more befitting, more commendable, more appropriate for the Muslims to educate others about the ruling regarding the one who defames, curses, insults the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم), deriving examples of such instances from Seerah and the sayings of our classical scholars, like Ibn Taymiyyah. It would have been closer to righteousness to direct the Muslims towards that action which must be taken: Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said: ”It is Wajib, it is mandatory to kill the one who curses the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) if there are any examples otherwise in Seerah it is because they have come to him and they have announced their Tawbah repentance) and they have become Muslims, but if they don’t then the Hukm (ruling) remains. And this is evidence (referring to an incident from Seerah) that harming Allah and His Messenger is a reason to encourage Muslims to kill whoever does that even if they have a contract with the Muslims, even if there is a covenant! After the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away, we cannot forgive anyone. We can forgive people when they harm us, but not when they harm the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).”
  3. The Position of The Muslim During Calamities MARCH 26, 2012 BY ABDUL-MALIK MERCHANT In the name of Allah (The One). I send peace and blessings upon His Messenger (Al-Mustafa) and upon His Messenger’s family, companions, and those who follow him in righteousness until the Day of Judgement (Yowm Al-Qiyaamah). Allah subhaanahu wa ta’ala (praise and exhalation be to Him) tests his servants with good and evil to make clear where they stand when it befalls them. There are some who repent to their Lord and consider these calamities and events as a wake up call from negligence and disobedience. Therefore, these calamities are good for them, even if they attained from them something which they disliked. There are also people who do not learn from what transpired and consider it something natural saying: “Our fathers [also] were touched with hardship and ease.” — Surah Al-A’raaf (7) : 95 They call that what transpires “natural disasters” and thus attributing it to nature. This is because they do not believe in Allah, they believe with weak Iman and have lost their way, or they follow someone else in that without reflecting over the statement’s meaning. It is obligatory for the believer’s speech to coincide with his Iman. Allah subhaanahu (praise be to He) mentions that whoever does not learn from the current affairs that He will do one of two things to him: either He will hasten a punishment for him or he will lure him with blessing and then take him by surprise. This is as Allah said: “So when they forgot that by which they had been reminded, We opened to them the doors of every [good] thing until, when they rejoiced in that which they were given, We seized them suddenly, and they were [then] in despair.” — Surah Al-An’aam (6) : 44 Surely in our time we see great events and those around us are consumed with revolutions. In them (have come) trials: countries have fallen, blood has been spilled, money has been wasted, and houses have been destroyed. There are very few who admonish, fear, ponder, and admonish their people so that possibly they will turn back (from doing such actions); rather, it is the opposite with us. In these days there are those who call to women’s freedom, removal of the Hijab, uncovering, and the free-mixing between men and women with women working as their reasoning. There are those from us who call to the opening of theaters and cinemas, until the point where some of the people responsible declare in the newspapers without any fear or shame. They do not learn from what is taking place around us from disasters and calamities that have swept whole communities as Allah said: “Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].” — Surah Al-Room (30) : 41 The fortunate one is the one who takes heed from others. The one who is responsible for the country is obligated to be abreast of his responsibility because it is a trust. He has to seek uprightness and prohibit things that lead to corruption. People today specialize in corruption by embezzling money. This is a type of corruption and greater than that is corruption in the religious and character. We are in need of callers with that (religion and character), who admonish, and are direct when they admonish. Wa la howla wa la quwata ella billah (there is no might and no power except with Allah). (In conclusion,) it is obligatory upon everyone to fear Allah, advise with truth and patience, and work together upon righteousness and piety. Surely NOT working together is transgression and aggression. I send peace and salutations upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.

  7. In honor of it being Monday, and my new-week's resolutions still lurking in a hefty "To Do" pile, a guest post by The Diplomat, who is more dedicated to the blog than I: Dear Mr. Lobbyist, Just because the professors at whatever tier three university you attended were impressed with your polysyllabic vocabulary, does not mean that I am. Please do not delve into the far reaches of your lexicon to pull out words whose definition you are only vaguely familiar with. I do know what that word means, I do know how to use it properly, and no, for the record, you are not actually using circumlocution in an appropriate fashion. Furthermore, you are only making yourself look foolish by trying. I realize that one of your job requirements is to talk to people, and for that I am deeply sorry. However, I must implore you to take some advice from good old Mr. Twain "It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." Clearly you cannot follow this advice to the letter, but if you could please try to follow it in spirit I would be most appreciative. Kisses, The Diplomat Clearly, a life of politics is not for me, as enduring such appalling *******ization of the English language might case me to flip my lid. Ten points for The Diplomat, who is nothing if not patient and restrained in the face of rampant bullshittery.

  9. I don't always promote the links I've been sent,* but occasionally, I make exceptions, either for particularly good resources (noted here), or because of my surpassing glee at the writing featured (see: Funny Mean Friend). Incidentally, I've yet to sell out on the sponsorship thing,** so you'll have to just accept the fact that some things are just too cool not to blog about. In the last few weeks, I've had two helpful resources sent my way, both of which I've linked in "Legal Bits." The first, an LSAT tips blog, will get a mostly perfunctory glance here, but is well worth sending your pre-L buddies and floundering MBA friends to. The second, a legal wiki, is a little more styled towards the needs of this readership, I expect, and I encourage you to go check it out. Links are in the heading for each section below. Ready? Go! LSAT Blog: Ace The LSAT I've been remiss in not doing a write-up for this site several weeks ago, but it should be helpful for my pre-L readers who are taking the February or June tests. This blog is the one that I would be writing, if I wasn't busy doling out less helpful advice to my law school peers. While the blog is in no way a replacement for a full LSAT prep course, or many hours of dedicated study, Steve offers quite a few helpful tips, and is a very reassuring writer. More importantly, you'll be getting your test information from a professional, and not from the ego and drama fueled madness that many pre-law student advice boards turn into, as the blind lead the blind (Right into TTT! OMG!). Steve Schwarz, the author, is a professional LSAT tutor living in Manhattan. He posts tips on the taking and preparing for the LSAT, as well as applying to schools, every Friday. If you're in the NY area, he also offers occasional free clinics, which I suspect would be well worth the trip. Especially for the budding law student who is just embarking on their application process, this blog will be quite helpful. To check it out, go here: LSAT Blog: Ace the LSAT. Which brings me to.... Law Wiki. Free outlines! And other terrific resources, too, but I had to get your attention somehow. I am especially excited about the potential for this site. Currently, it is styled just like wikipedia, with sections for outlines and information about law firms, both Candadian and American. Like any good wiki, the success of the site will be dependent upon participation of members, so I encourage you to go and check it out, and add what you can. If you've never worked in a wiki, they are essentially peer-edited and reviewed online resources. Information comes from users, and is corrected by users as it needs updating. It ends up being a pretty neat community effort, with surprisingly effective results. Moreover, for the technologically marginal, wikis are tremendously easy to edit, so no fear! Get thyself typing, and convey your legal brilliance! Law students, I've noticed, can be peculiarly reluctant to share their outlines, so I'd encouarge you to think of it as a karmic gift to your terrified first-semester self (or your overworked 3rd semester self), and do unto others over there. You can, of course, get away with being a free rider and grab all the outlines you'd like, but classy people don't free ride, guys. There are a number of outlines up now, and it should be a very helpful place as it grows. If you're a member of a firm, the site can be a great source for getting information out to future employees and law students. I've also noticed that there is some advertising space available as well- it would be a great chance for a firm to get their name out, while supporting a terrific cause. This wiki is particularly exciting and appropriate for our generation of law students- I suspect that it could burgeon into a truly extraordinary resource. You can go straight to the site here: Law Wiki, and get involved, or you can email legalintellects@gmail.com. Happy typing! ...And that, ladies and gents, is the sum of my helpful behavior for the week. Don't expect me to be opening any doors or doing any dishes, mk?
  10. ....Unpopular opinions and mozzarella sticks, so I'm going to call this one a wash, but I am still grouchy.* 1. I hate Twitter, and I think it's making us dumber and more self involved than we were before. This problem has expanded to the point where I am considering delivering my patented You Are Not That Important Lecture via loudspeaker as I drive through town. Ha ha, the blogger thinks people should talk less. Ironic, huh? Bite me. 2. Dear Angry Radio Callers- Angry! With the earmarks! And the pork! Except if it's for your district! Outrage! Fury! Yelling! Something for us now, please! This is a theme here. I should wear a shirt: "Nobody caaaares." It would sum up my feelings on other people's feelings perfectly. Especially the unsolicited ones. 3. Some people really shouldn't go to law school. Because of the Dumb, but also because of the Driftless, the Ditzy, the Totally Underwhelming, and the Open Mouthed Chewing. 4. I don't think milk does do a body good. So there. Meh. Updated to Add: The moral of the story (and the way I attempt to artfully dodge hypocrisy, all the while refusing to edit as I blog) is this: 1. If you're going to speak inanity, don't presume that someone wants to listen. Most importantly, don't assume that you have a right to make someone listen. Someone is rolling their eyes at you right now. Are you adding value? Making me laugh? No? Then I am making voo-doo dolls of your shouty face or ignoring you entirely, depending on the level of Annoyed coursing through my veins today. 2. Milk is better with chocolate, but even better when it's coffee. 3. Do not cross me. I am grouchy 2L.
  11. As-salamu Alaykum Warahamtullahi Wabarakatuh. Br CDOOO, InshaAllah I hope this finds you in the best state of health and IMAAN. If I may ya Akhii. In islam we have to advice each other, simply because its the sunnah of the prophet(SAW) You say you and this Sister met online(oopSS). You see ya Akhii, In order to safeguard the moral integrity of family and society, Muslim men and women are expected to observe certain guidelines of behaviour that Westerners may find restrictive. We therefore must avoid situations that would put us alone with members of the opposite sex, or lead to temptation or misunderstandings. Moving on! I am not here to judge. In a certain class of people there rages an internal war, one that doesn't take place on the battlefield, but in one's bedroom, one's office, one's own home and even on somalionline forum threads. It is a war that results in ulcers or an increase in blood pressure. Everything frustrates these people: they become angry at inflation, furious because the rains came late and exasperated when the value of their currency falls. They are forever perturbed and vexed, no matter what the reason. They think that every cry is against them. (Qur 'an 63: 4) My advice to you is this: do not carry the weight of the globe on your shoulders. Let the ground carry the burden of those things that happen. Always remember Ya Akhii, At a time of calamity, there is nothing more beneficial to you than having a brave heart. The one who has such a heart is self-possessed he has firm faith and cool nerves. On the other hand, during the course of any given day, the coward slaughters himself many times with apprehensions and presentiments of impending doom. Therefore, if you desire for yourself a stable life, face all situations with bravery and perseverance. And let not those who have no certainty of faith discourage you... (Qur'an 30: 60)Be more resolute than your circumstances and more ferocious than the winds of calamity. May mercy descend upon the weak-hearted, for how often it is that they are shaken by the smallest of tremors? And verily, you will find them the greediest of mankind for life... (Qur'an 2: 96)As for those who are resolute, they receive help from their Lord and are confident of His promise. He sent down calmness and tranquility upon them. (Qur'an 48: 18)
  12. Why is "rahmah" singular and 'barakat' plural in the salaams? Rahmah is a masdar (verbal noun) that does not have a plural. It would be incorrect to say "Rahamat", just as we do not say "ra'afaat" (kindness), instead we say "ra'fah". Rahamat would signify a limit that would be contained within a certain number, while "rahmah" points to a more universal, specific and absolute meaning. So, the singular is better and more complete than the plural. This is one of the amazing aspects of the language, that a singular word is far reaching in meaning than the plural. This is why Allah azza wa jal says: قُلْ فَلِلَّهِ الْحُجَّةُ الْبَالِغَةُ 'Say: "With Allah is the perfect proof and argument"' (6:149) Hujjatul Baalighah (both singluar) is more perfect and more prevailing in meaning than saying "fa lillah al-hujaj al-bawaligh" (plural) Similarly, Allah ta'ala says: وَإِن تَعُدُّوا نِعْمَتَ اللَّهِ لَا تُحْصُوهَا "and if you count the Blessings of Allah, never will you be able to count them." (14:34) The use of the singular word "ni'mat" is more universal than saying "ni'am", the plural. Similarly, the ayah: رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ "Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!" (2:201) "Hasanah" has a more complete meaning than "hasanat". Likewise the ayah: يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ بِنِعْمَةٍ مِّنَ اللَّهِ وَفَضْلٍ "They rejoice in a Grace and a Bounty from Allah" (3:171) (Ni'mah and Fadl are both singular) As for 'barakat", it refers to good that is continuous - when one good ends, another one begins. The plural is more universal than the singular with this meaning, which is why we see "barakat" used in the Qur'an: رَحْمَتُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ "The Mercy of Allah and His Blessings be on you, O the family [of Ibrahim]" (11:73) -Imam ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (rahimahullah), "Bada'i al-Fawa`id"
