I'm interested to know more about what work was done to mobilize the Somali community in Minneapolis to go out and vote. In Toronto, we've had a number of Somalis go for positions in municipal and even provincial governments in heavily Somali wards/ridings, but it seems those demographic numbers don't quite translate into voting numbers. A successful campaign in Toronto would require a grassroots voter registration/education campaign for the Somali community as well, I believe. -

Because a lot of overzealous SL nationalists don't see themselves as part of the larger Somali community, and narrowly focus on the interests and accomplishments of their own. Khayr;984735 wrote: So there is zero interest in this incident on here. If the shooter was a muslim, then all the nifaq would have come out and come down pouring with condemnation. Every twitter alim would have been tweeting about their condemnation. That's not necessarily true, I think there's less interest in this because it didn't turn out to be a mass shooting, but a spectacle by a man wanting to commit suicide. A friend of mine from New York was there at the mall and saw the gunman, and as terrifying as it was, no one was killed because the gunman did not intend to hurt anyone but himself. But you do have a point, had it been a white person committing mass slaughter (as they often have), the media response would be very different than if a Muslim had. The discussion would be about mental illness and alienation, not terrorism.

Why are you making fun of gender studies?:mad: I'd be glad to hand copies of Judith Butler and Michel Foucault to anyone who thinks its a fluffy topic that you can coast through in college.

Larry Good luck finding your friend. The problem is the name on paper, even with Somali citizens of Saudi Arabia, are often fake as well and often those papers were passed to them by someone else. My relatives in SA are all citizens this way, initially getting citizenship through other Somalis claiming them as siblings when they weren't even related, so their legal names are different from their real ones. I forwarded this article to my mom, hopefully she knows something or can inquire next time she talks to her brother in SA.

Rob Ford: “I embarrassed everyone in the city’ but won’t resign Published on Tue Nov 05 2013 A somber and shaken Rob Ford apologized repeatedly for his behaviour but insisted Tuesday he will not resign. “I know I embarrassed everyone in the city. I know admitting my mistake was the right thing to do and I feel like a thousands pounds have been lifted off my shoulders,” he said four hours after admitting he smoked crack cocaine. “Admitting it was the most difficult and embarrassing thing I’ve ever had to do. Folks, I have nothing left to hide. Unlike the scheduled and controlled mid-afternoon news conference, the earlier one was impromptu, instigated by Ford when he came out unexpectedly to ask reporters to ask him their cocaine questions again. This time, he spoke from a podium and used a script for about five minutes, starting at 4:25 p.m. and after taking a deep breath. “I want to be clear. I want to be crystal clear to every single person. These mistakes will never ever happen again. I kept this from my family, especially my brother Doug, my staff, my council colleagues, because I was embarrassed and ashamed. “To the residents of Toronto I know I have to regain your trust, your confidence. I love my job, I love the city, I love saving taxpayers money and I love being your mayor. “For the sake of the taxpayers, we must get back to work immediately. I was elected to do a job and that’s exactly what I’m going to continue doing.” Earlier, Ford told reporters outside his office, “Yes, I have smoked crack cocaine.” “But no, do I, am I an addict? No. Have I tried it? Probably in one of my drunken stupors, probably approximately about a year ago,” he said at the earlier news conference. “I answered your question. You ask the question properly, I’ll answer it. Yes, I’ve made mistakes. All I can do now is apologize and move on.” Ford said he did not know the exact circumstances of his crack use. “I don’t even remember,” he said. “Some of the stuff that you guys have seen me, the state I’ve been in? It’s a problem.” Ford lawyer Dennis Morris told CP24 of that early news conference, “I don’t think he advised anyone” that he was going to confess. Ford’s not saying anything earlier “is his way of dealing with it,” Morris said. An apology for drunkenness on Sunday was the start of his admission, he said. Ford said in May that he does not smoke crack — using the present tense — but steadfastly refused to answer when asked repeatedly if he had ever smoked crack or done so while in office. “I wasn’t lying. You didn’t ask the correct questions,” he said. “No, I’m not an addict and no I do not do drugs. I made mistakes in the past and all I can do is apologize but it is what it is. And I can’t change the past and I can apologize to my family, my friends, my colleagues and the people of this great city.” In fact, Ford was asked repeatedly whether he has ever smoked crack. He dodged the question as recently as yesterday morning, saying simply that he is not an addict. Nor did the admission slow down the calls for him to take a leave or resign from city councilors to as far afield as Justice Minister Peter MacKay, who said Ford “needs to get help.” Evidence against Ford and pressure on him has escalated since last Thursday when Toronto police Chief Bill Blair dropped his own bombshell, announcing police had a video that showed Ford smoking what appeared to be crack cocaine. It was the Toronto Star’s reports of that video that led to Ford’s May denial of crack use and even of the video’s existence. Ford apologized on his Sunday radio show for drunken behaviour during Taste of the Danforth this summer and at city hall on St. Patrick’s Day 2012. But he went back on the offensive Monday, telling AM640 host John Oakley, “I do not use drugs. I drink. I’ll be running the ship even if it’s by myself.” On Monday and earlier Tuesday, Councillor Doug Ford launched a counter-attack on behalf of his younger brother Rob on radio programs and at a Ryerson University journalism class. Doug Ford demanded Blair step aside during the police investigation into Ford’s meetings with an alleged drug dealer. Ford said he was going to file a formal complaint against the chief. The police launched a months-long surveillance of Ford and alleged drug dealer Alexander “Sandro” Lisi after the Star’s disclosure of the video. Half the details of that investigation were released Thursday shortly before Blair’s news conference. Police uncovered “no evidence of illegality,” Ford lawyer Morris told CP24. More questions about the mayor remain unanswered from those police documents, one of them contained in a Star story Tuesday that questioned if Ford was paying the bills at 15 Windsor Rd., described as a crack house where it is believed the video of Ford was shot.

So not only is the fat b@stard not resigning after admitting he lied to the city for months and smokes crack, he's running for re-election in 2014! What a crock of sh!t.

Rob Ford crack scandal: Councillors to strip mayor of power By: Robyn Doolittle City Hall, Published on Tue Nov 05 2013 It was a stunning admission that took Rob Ford’s own staff by surprise: “Yes I have smoked crack cocaine.” For one of his most loyal allies, Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong, it was the breaking point. “I think he’s lost the moral authority to lead,” Minnan-Wong said moments after Ford’s impromptu press conference. “We’re in unchartered territory.” As a member of the mayor’s cabinet-like executive committee, Minnan-Wong is a leader among council’s conservative faction. He has been critical of Ford throughout the mayor’s various blunders and scandals, but always remained loyal to the agenda and ultimately the mayor himself. Now, even Minnan-Wong appears in favour of curbing Ford’s power. At the next council meeting, Minnan-Wong will table a motion calling for Ford to “apologize for misleading the City of Toronto as to the existence of a video,” which appears to show him smoking crack. Other councillors are considering more aggressive motions. “Some councillors have been talking cutting the mayor’s office budget so dramatically that it wouldn’t be able to function,” said Councillor Jaye Robinson, “but I don’t think that has the support to get through council.” Council is considering passing a symbolic confidence motion, but it would be a “slap on the wrist” without teeth, Robinson noted. More likely, city council will pass a series of motions stripping Ford of his power. Left-wing councillor John Filion has already put forward his plan. Filion has recommended that council prevent the mayor from being able to “appoint and dismiss” the chairs of the standing committees as well as the deputy mayor position. The idea is that this would give councillors in positions of power the freedom to oppose Ford.

How cute, Apophis knows how to use his backspace key. I'm not sure why anyone bothers responding to your posts, you never have anything to say and you are deliberately obtuse. No one cares for your knee-jerk defenses or what you think our mayor was smoking in the video, and it's strange that you feel this invested in a political issue taking place in Canada.

Apophis;984112 wrote: There's no evidence that the substance inside the pipe is "crack" and as such the Mayor should stay at his post. The liberal lynch mob will not succeed. Rob Ford : 'Yes, I have smoked crack cocaine.' Published on Tue Nov 05 2013 “Yes, I have smoked crack cocaine,” Mayor Rob Ford admitted at a surprise news conference just after noon. “I am not an addict,” he told the media. “I wasn’t lying. You didn’t ask the correct questions,” Ford explained to why the admission was so long in coming. “You guys kept referring to alcohol,” he told the media. “I want everybody in the city to see this tape. I don’t even recall there being a tape. I want to see the state I was in. “No, I don’t do drugs.” Ford said he smoked crack about a year ago. “I don’t even remember. Probably in one of my drunken stupors. You guys have seen the state I’ve been in.” The admission comes six months after Ford said at a May 24 news conference, “I do not use crack cocaine. Nor am I an addict of crack cocaine.” Since that May news conference, Ford has said many times he does not use crack. The news conference came a week after two Star reporters disclosed that they had seen a clear video of Mayor Ford smoking what appeared to be crack from a glass pipe, calling Justin Trudeau, now Liberal leader, a “fag” and his high school football players “f------ minorities.” At that news conference, Ford said he would not comment on a video “that I have never seen or does not exist.” It was only last Thursday that Toronto police Chief Bill Blair confirmed the video does exist and it does show what the Star’s Kevin Donovan and Robyn Doolittle reported. Blair’s news conference followed release of half a police document about months of surveillance of Ford and alleged drug dealer Alexander “Sandro” Lisi. Lisi was charged Oct. 1 with drug charges and on Thursday with extortion related to “threats” to recover the video. Breaking news so I'll post articles as they appear...
