  1. I am a certified SOL addict after only 2 weeks; I need help. Who was you first crush? How old were you? Mine was the most beautiful D-Hunter girl ever, my cousin's best friend, and much older than me. Thick, Indian-like hair flowing to the small of her back. Beautiful set of pristine white teeth against dark gums, she was also flirty and encouraged my teenage interests, found it cute... Her Somali was PERFECT, she enunciated each word, one by one, like a BBC announcer. I could listen to her all day... I swear I've not seen a more beautiful woman since her...and she had the perfect name to boot: Ladan.

  3. Mintid Farayar;911041 wrote: I understand your point but he does hold some significant cards when negotiating with the Mogadishu gov't, i.e. the full support of the Kenyan gov't! Hence, why he is allowed to export and collect taxes from charcoal (since the capture of Kismayo). Have patience, those cards will be less valuable after the Kenyan election passes... The Kenyan elections aren't going to change much because if Raila Odinga wins, he is part of the current coalition government as the Prime Minister and will continue the same way. If Uhuru Kenyatta wins, he will follow in Kibaki's footsteps since he is largely seen as a Kibaki project anyway and was crucial in Kibaki's win in 2007 by stepping down in Kibaki;s favour. So don't count on a Kenya policy change. The only time that something will happen - a wild card - is if Uhuru wins and reer galbeedka turn off the money taps that is sustaining KDF becuase reer galbeed have made it clear they don;t want to work with the man because of the charges facing him and Willian Ruto, his running mate, at the ICC.

  5. Reeyo;910771 wrote: You're a 'boy'? kkk. Yes, and before you get any ideas, I am using the Doris Day song as analogy, to make a point, of mothers thinking the world of their children!

  9. Apophis;910739 wrote: Can you tell someone's name just by looking at them? And doesn't your anecdote answer your question? No my anecdote doesn't answer my question - for someone to say you are that and that clan, they must have an idea, an image, of what people from that clan look like and thus the association with the person they are looking at that very moment.

  11. I always thought all Somalis looked alike. I can't tell someone from Las Canood from one from Mandheera; they all look the same to me. My own family has a variety of looks in there. For some reason, all my friends think I am a D-Hunter; but am not - which begs the question, is there such a thing as a D-Hunter look? Or more generally can you really tell one's clan from looking at them?
  12. Oh, the sweet nothings our mothers tell us to get thru the vicissitudes of life! What did your hooyo tell you when you were young? I remember Doris Day's Que Sera Sera; whatever will be will song: When I was just a little girl I asked my mother what will I be Will I be pretty will I be rich Here's what she said to me Que Sera Sera Whatever will be will be The future's not ours to see Que Sera Sera What will be will be Well, mine thought I was the most beautiful boy ever born in the village, she nicknamed me "Qorone", the "carved one", so cute I could only have been carved to perfection. How about you guys? What did hooyo tell you?
  13. Aaliyyah;910721 wrote: ^ One of the videos I posted someone did mention it helped them breath better but that was after consuming it. It is interesting that your mother could breath better by just sprinkling on her pillow. Kolay dadka wawayn waxay sameenayaan yaga baa og. You said she also believed caruurta yaryar in loo mariyo. I did my research now and they said it helps with growth. As weird as it looks what they sometimes do, wisdom baa ku jirta. And you can find this oil even from indian stores you dont have to drive to a somali store if it is too far (inkasto hoyada waxay ku dirsato ay aheen in aad ka wahsatid wax ka badan bay ku qabatay).. MashaAllah; you are a very wise sister, you are beginning to grow on me lol. You are right, wahsi iyo hooyo meel ma islagalaan! And she did raise us thru hell, Lord only knows. On rubbing it on the kids, she says "it helps strengthen their muscles"
  14. To paraphrase Chinua Achebe, there is nothing wrong with the Somali people, the Somali soil, the Somali water, the Somali air; the trouble with Somalia is a failure of LEADERSHIP.
  15. Aaliyyah;910716 wrote: When I said magic I was referring to the evil eye. And, evil eye does exist. I wouldnt know why your mother sprinkles black seed on her pillow but I was merely making a reasonable assumption. So why did she do it? did you ever asked? LOL Without getting pulled into a discussion on the evil eye; the answer as to why my mum sprinkles xabad-sawda on her pillow is because she says it makes her "breathe easier at night". You'd think some eucalyptus oil or menthol would do the same and we'd not have to trek all the way to Somali shopping malls to buy the stuff, easier to pop into the nearest pharmacy...
  16. Aaliyyah;910711 wrote: I did hear something along the lines that black seed protects you from magic. Perhaps, that is why your mother sprinkles a bit on her pillow. lol...I think though it is better to consume it. Nigella sativa is another way of saying black seed you are right. I am not sure if it the scientific name or not. And yeah there have been so many studies proving how effective it is. Kkk. My mum does not believe in magic my sister; I thought you'd have figured by my earlier post that am somewhat of a science buff. I disabused her of superstitions and other mumbo jumbos along long time ago! The only thing I can't convince her of is that there is no such thing as mingis...working on it...
  17. Alpha Blondy;910702 wrote: in somali its called xabad-sowda. I think Xabad-sowda is Arabic since Nigella sativa was unknown to Somalis till it was introduced by the Arabs together with Islam. Also, the plant does not grow in the Somali regions so there will be no original Somali name for it. Somali regions are well know for gums and resins such used in frankincense and manufacture perfumes e.g. Commiphora Molmol or myhrr or simply malmal....
  18. Waaaaaaaaaaaaa, dhuusamareeb travelling circus or what?
  19. Best talent you can have and best one you can give to your kids is not any of the things you guys are talking about on this thread. Guess what it is: GOOD MANNERS. Best inheritance your parents can leave for you and you can leave for your kids in turn. The Prophet says, I paraphrase, my Lord has mannered me, and mannered me well.
  20. My mum sprinkles a bit on her pillow before she sleeps and insists on rubbing it on babies; can't say I like the smell though, am like wow, go easy. I think the scientific name is Nigella sativa? In a study in Kuwait, it was shown to cure Diabetes...
  21. However much I hate this move from the bottom of my heart, there is a silver lining: we should go back and build our country, with all the sacrifices that entails. And by go back, I mean forget Dadaab; let's hit Xamar and all the other relatively peaceful places.
  22. Xaaji Xunjuf;910230 wrote: We should ask our selves is there Something Somalis actually agree on, i can think only religion excluding the few Christians and atheists. All the other things Somalis don't agree on. Like every one talks about Somalinimo but we don't have a clear definition what Somalinimo is yet every one talks about it? For Some it means a country or the unity of the Somali inhabited areas in the Horn for others its just about social interaction of Somalis in a positive way This is precisely why I asked the question in the first place: what does Somalinimo mean?
  23. You guys are brutal. Can't one take a break from SOL...
  24. Apophis;909508 wrote: A Somali is identified through the Somali language, everything else is transient and changing but anyway, why does one feel the need to pinpoint what is a Somali if not to exclude the non-Somali? It's 18th century thinking. Language is only enough unless you accept the cultural baggage that comes with it as well. If you look at the Arabs, they share a common language and to some degree culture, from the blue-eyed, blonde-haired Lebanese Maronite Christian to the blue-black "Arab" in Sudan. I seriously doubt Somalis will accept another as Somali because you speak the Somali language. Just look at the Somali Bantu in Somalia itself. Are you seriously telling me that if the Kikuyu of Kenya started speaking Somali for whatever reason they will BE Somali? Come on....

Somaliland and Somalia never shared a country only between 1960 and 1991 its a whole different case different civilization different continent different history different people thus incomparable. You are only accentuating my case - the two were together (call it an empire if you want), they were forced apart by circumstances (cold war), but came back together again. SL and Somalia voluntarily came together and were forced apart by a terrible civil war, now that things are changing - touch wood - why should it be so difficult to accept the notion that they can and should come together again, especially when the entire world is slowly moving into regional economic blocs and willingly ceding sovereignty for economic and political benefit e.g EU??
