Yesterday the one year old process to establish Jubbaland federal state has been concluded with the election of Ahmed Madoobe as president and Fartag as vice president. Both were sworn right after the election. Puntland welcomed the election. So did many in the diaspora. Parliament and local government structure is yet to be filled. However, the passage of state charter, adoption of state flag and yesterday's leadership election represent constitutional and political milestones that cannot be reversed. The formation of jubbaland state also marks very important step toward the implementation of provincial constitution. Puntland and Somaliland were the only two federal states that meet the constitutional requirement of provincial charter. With the birth of Jubbaland state, federalism and local governance is a fait accompli ---there is no going back Ironically, federal government based in Mogadishu has immediately opposed the outcome of the Kismayo election. Even more surprising, the government seems to be itching for an opportunity to interfere , supporting Barre Hiiraale, a former discredited warlord. Ministry of Interior issued statement that in effect makes abundantly clear that it wishes a civil strive and political conflict in the region in the hope that it would gain a foot hold in Kismayo. But it is making a grave mistake to think that another war would benefit the government. The new administration has the legitimacy to rule over the region as majority of the locals have been very involved in the process. Ahmded Madobe has now the authority to secure the region from alshabaab, and work toward providing services to the war weary locals. Let the government prop up former warlords while locals get busy fighting off alshabaab and establishing governance ---that will be a clear contrast

Chimera, I have many preferences but I tell my self today is not the day where I can choose one alternative over another. For Somalia to come back and revive itself, we need to be realistic about our current choices and not forget yesterday's experience. We are where we are because our politics has gotten more realistic and practical, the reason we are NOT witnessing Mogadishu residents fighting foreign troops in the city and much of the country. Madoobe has persevered for Jubbaland stability and he has been elected fair and square --granted he was the favorite but he did not put a gun on anyone's head.

Baashi, The election took place and Madoobe won. Gaandi dropped out and canceled his candidacy (that is what the election commission said). Two other candidates also withdrew their candidacy endorsed Madoobe. A vice president was also elected from Gedo. I am not sure if others contended for that post. But there is no contraversy so far about the election , read online portals Hiiraan Online included as to how things unfolded. It was rather orderly.
