  1. WSLF was not a serious threat to Ethiopia after 1977. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Somali_Liberation_Front The Somali government subsequently forbade the WSLF and its leaders to use its territory to launch attacks into Ethiopia. By 1989 the WSLF had ceased to be an effective guerrilla organization within Ethiopia. Siad Barre's decision to restrict the WSLF, led to the exile of Yusuf Dheere in 1989 and to the formation of a WSLF splinter group, the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), whose headquarters were in Kuwait. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogaden_War Following the withdrawal of the SNA, the WSLF continued their insurgency. By May 1980, the rebels, with the assistance of a small number of SNA soldiers who continued to help the guerrilla war, controlled a substantial region of the Ogaden. However, by 1981 the insurgents were reduced to sporadic hit-and-run attacks and were finally defeated. In addition, the WSLF and SALF were significantly weakened after the Ogaden War. The former was practically defunct by the late 1980s, with its splinter group, the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) operating from headquarters in Kuwait. Even though elements of the ONLF would later manage to slip back into the Ogaden, their actions had little impact Ethiopian professor writes about Ethiopia’s policy of destabilizing Somalia In addition, the WSLF and SALF were significantly weakened after the Ogaden War. 2. I am interested in WSLF insurgency, because this guerrilla could defeat Ethiopia in 1977. I would like to know what happened to WSLF after 1985. Did WSLF cease to be a serious military threat to Ethiopia after 1977 war?
  3. White star: We used to call Cubans during Ogaden war debacle “Kuubo naaswayn” meaning Cubans are gyncomatsiac. Siad Barre ordered Cuban and Soviet advisors in Somalia to leave within 48 hrs accusing them betraying communist Somalia. You did not answer my questions. Why did Somalia lose Ogaden War? What happened to WSLF after 1982? Please,be an intelligent man and answer the questions.
  4. I would like to know what happened to WSLF after 1982? Somali army seized 90 % of Ogaden but Cuban troops and Soviet advisers turned the tide of the war.

  6. Somali Army was defeated because Barre never imagined that Soviet Union would betray him and his people, he trusted in James Carter and made a huge mistake, this a lesson for nations who trust american words. You can love U.S but you can not trust in Uncle Sam.
  7. Thank you for answer my question but I dont understand somali,so I am not sure you are telling me the truth. Do you have other sources which support your standpoint that Somali Army defeated Cubans and Russians in 1978? Please, the source might be in english because I dont understand somali.

  10. Holac: Somalia captured hundreds of Cuban communist fighters during the 1977 war. My father told me that the Cubans fighters were physically so out of shape and fat, that Somalis used to called them naasdheer meaning Cubans with “long breasts”. Why did Castro send mercenaries that were so out of shape to fight against the lean, mean Somalis? Somalia captured 1 cuban prisoner of War. Check out this video: These mercenaries out of shape defeated Somali Army in battles around Harer and Jijiga in 1978.The destroyed once proud Somali Army. Adam: ^Guys just to let you know Luiz/Cubano is a Troll who for some reason wanderer from forum to forum obessed with 1977 ColdWar please do not feed him I know this guy you can not reason with him. Hi,How are you Adam? I can reason with everybody in this forum,we can talk about the Somali/Ethiopian War without problems. Am I Lying about 1977 war outcome? 12. You are right Somali Army was defeated by Cubans and Soviet Union.
  13. You are wrong Tallabo.Cuban troops defeated Somali Army in 1978. Show me sources which prove Somali Army defeated Cubans. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethio-Somali_War Ethiopian-Cuban Counter-Attack (February-March) The expected Ethiopian-Cuban attack occurred in early February; however, it was accompanied by a second attack that the Somalis did not expect. A column of Ethiopian and Cuban troops crossed northeast into the highlands between Jijiga and the border with Somalia, bypassing the SNA-WSLF force defending the Marda Pass. Mil Mi-6 helicopters airlifted Cuban BMD-1 and ASU-57 armored vehicles behind enemy lines. The attackers were thus able to assault from two directions in a "pincer" action, allowing the re-capture of Jijiga in only two days while killing 3,000 defenders.[citation needed] The Somali defense collapsed and every major Ethiopian town was recaptured in the following weeks. Recognizing that his position was untenable, Siad Barre ordered the SNA to retreat back into Somalia on 9 March 1978, although Rene LaFort claims that the Somalis, having foreseen the inevitable, had already withdrawn their heavy weapons. The last significant Somali unit left Ethiopia on 15 March 1978, marking the end of the war. Effects of the war Following the withdrawal of the SNA, the WSLF continued their insurgency. By May 1980, the rebels, with the assistance of a small number of SNA soldiers who continued to help the guerrilla war, controlled a substantial region of the Ogaden. However by 1981 the insurgents were reduced to sporadic hit-and-run attacks and were finally defeated. For the Barre regime, the invasion was perhaps the greatest strategic blunder since independence, and it weakened the military. Almost one-third of the regular SNA soldiers, three-eighths of the armored units and half of the Somali Air Force (SAF) were lost. The weakness of the Barre administration led it to effectively abandon the dream of a unified Greater Somalia. The failure of the war aggravated discontent with the Barre regime; the first organized opposition group, the Somali Salvation Democratic Front (SSDF), was formed by army officers in 1979.

  16. I would like to talk about this war and Why did Siad Barre lose the war? What happened to WSLF after the war? A Somali colonel(Abdullahi Ahmed Jama),member of Siad Barre army talks about the War in 1977: http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a207996.pdf The local conflict on the Horn permitted the application of Soviet power and militated against a commensurate Western response; thus the Russian intervention reversed the outcome of the conflict in favor of Ethiopia militarily at the present time By early 1978, the Russians had concentrated large amounts of arms, equipment, and military personnel in Ethiopia. Cuban troops from different places, but mainly from Angola, South Yemeni troops, Libyans, and East Germans were in preparation for conducting the final and fatal blow to Somalia In 1977, Somalia was involved in an all out war with Ethiopia over the Ogaden region, and the Somali conquest of the Ogaden would undoubtedly have been successful except for foreign, particularly Russian, intervention

Ethiopian-Somali War was a disaster for Somalia. Siad Barre almost defeat Ethiopian troops but he did not think Soviet Union and Cuba would betray him, that was his principal mistake. Tha war brought destruction, death and shame to Somali people and Army, after that war, Somalia would never be the same nation, the somali dreams were destroyed by Warsaw Pact and Cubans. Siad Barre kiled thousands of innocent somalis, the somali troops raped, killed and destroyed part of Somalia, at the begining of 1991, Somali state was just a dream and Somalia became in a hell on the earth.

I hope somebody can translate the book of Abdullahi Ahmed Yusuf, then we can understand his opinion about the conflict o 1978. Somalia was forced to withdraw from Ethiopia because its army had been weakened by Cuban and Ethiopian land and air attacks.
