This petition is either misleading or those who prepared did without factually checking the main issue of contention.

If you are familiar with the maritime boundary debate, the issue is totally different than this initiative According to the United Nation, every country have 12 mile Territorial sea boundaries Then, you add 200 nautical miles of economic exclusive zone. The EEZ, may overlap in same cases where the boundaries of nations are closer. No one is changing or able to change the EEZ boundaries. It is misleading to say that Somalia is losing 188 miles.

States also have right to the sea bed or the continental shelf beyond the EEZ. States have special rights on the exploration of the resources on the Zone. There is no debate or change on the 200 nautical miles of Somalia\s exclusive economic zone.

Having said that, the contentious issue between Kenya and Somalia is not about the EEZ, it is about demarcating the overlapping or the mapping between Kenya and Somalia EEZ boundaries. By diagonally or vertically manipulating the line from Somali zone, Kenya is getting a big chunk of the Somali exclusive zone or literally giving them couple of hundred miles on the continental shelf of Somalia. That is the issue.

Having read the petition, in my opinion it must be corrected and must target specifically on the issue that is favoring Kenya.
