The Islamist group of Al-Shabab in Somalia has awarded weapons and bombs to young school children who have won in Quran recital contest during the Ramadan month.

Radio Andalus, which was looted by Al-Shabab from former Mogadishu based-radio of Horn Afrik and now under Al-Shabab organized the contest which ended three weeks ago.

A very large ceremony was held in Mogadishu outskirts of Elasha, and was attended by senior officials of Al-Shabab group where they advised the children to go into ongoing fighting in Somalia and battle against Somalia government and the African Union troops in Mogadishu. At the end of the ceremony Sheikh Moktar Robow abu Mansur, senior Al-Shabab leader and former spokesman of the group awarded three young teenagers who have won the contest.

The first winner was given AK-47 rifle and $700, the second was awarded with AK-47 rifle and $500 and the third winner was given two hand grenades [F1 bombs] and $400 as prizes. The three were also given religious books.

“We want the children to fight for defending of their country and their religion.. just take these guns”. He said.

Meanwhile one of Al-Shabab’s senior propaganda officials, Sheikh Abdulkadir Mumin suggested continuing giving weapons to the young children in order to be part of wars, as he insisted that all Somalis should join Al-Shabab led-war in Somalia, where they are young or adults.Al-Shabab’s senior propaganda leader, Sheikh Abdulkadir Mumin speaks at the ceremony.

In 2009 the extremists also awarded young school children with weapons and bombs in Kismayo town.

An al-Shabab official urged the children to use their guns to defend their ideology not islam .Somalia's militant Islamist group al-Shabab is in crisis, as it battles to cope with the famine that is far worse in areas under its control than other parts of the country, leading to reports of splits in the leadership of the al-Qaeda-linked group. Al-Shabab are totally losing support. People are saying that the drought in the region was caused by a lack of rains, but the famine was man-made. They are asking - why has it been only in al-Shabab's areas? It is difficult for charities to work with al-Shabab because it demands money from them.

Robow's people are directly affected by this famine. So he wants aid agencies to come in. But Godane is suspicious of the UN and doesn't want them in Somalia. So he blocked it, Robow is now accusing Godane [who hails from the breakaway region of Somaliland] of letting people starve ,al-Shabab is under pressure is under crisis. I do not think al-Shabab really cares about the famine and somali people because they are more interested in fighting the government and the AU force for nothing and to gain their foreign ideology.
