I have 2 Pc's on my workstation, a laptop with windows vista, and a desktop with XP. The laptop connects to the internet wirelessly and for the desktop I have a cable that conencts to the router.

Not sure how the above info is useful, but I need help accessing my desktop hard drive through my laptop and vice versa. How do I set this up?

Followed all the steps as described, without success. Is there such a cable that connects both computers without using the router?

File sharing is the answer. Create sharing folder in each machine or you can make the whole C-drive or my documents' folder of the desktop as a sharing and then through the laptop you can have access to these folders on the the desktop.

Yes, you can easliy connect two computers together by a single crossover cable without router involved.
