1,050-kilometer march to Jowhar

- Monday, July 11, 2005 at 16:35

BAADWEYN (July 8,2005) - The Somali transitional government relocates to Jowhar, a temporary seat of government, despite the opposition from the parliament speaker and some Mogadishu warlords. Jowhar is a town only 90 kilometers to Mogadishu, the capital city. Most Somali MPs and the government have already relocated to Jowhar and are now successfully selling the government agenda to the cities and districts of the country.

The President of the transitional Somali government returned to Bossasso after his recent trip abroad. The president plans to take 1,050-kilometer trip from Bossasso to Jowhar on land in an apparent show of popularity. This ends the belief that Somalia needs foreign troops to disarm the militias. The likely role of the foreign troops might be confined to training the reconstituted military and police and, perhaps to serves as backup in disarming the notorious militias in many cities of Somalia whose sole source of living have been extorting money from the innocent victims in their respective cities.

The reconstituted Somali army in many cities on the President's way to Jowhar will be escorting him to the temporary seat of the government. The dwindling support of the warlords in Mogadishu and the apparent understanding of the Mogadishu population that it is not in their interest to lend support to the renegade MP-turned warlords, have prompted the Mogadishu-based political forces and the community leaders to take a position in the political wrangling of the transitional government and support the government's position to relocate to Jowhar before the capital city is cleared of the insecurity and marauding freelance gunmen who had held the Mogadishu community hostage for a decade and a half. The parliament speaker who had earlier aligned himself with these Mogadishu warlords, but now sensed that political failure is imminent, is now pleading with them to change their position and mend fences with the president and the Prime Minister.
