DAWLADDA PUNTLAND EE SOOMAALIYA

XAFIISKA MADAXWEYNAHA

PUNTLAND STATE OF SOMALIA

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

Garowe, November 2,2003

PRESS STATEMENT

Punt land State of Somalia is deeply saddened by the barbaric murders of innocent expatriates, who had risked their lives to help Somalis in Somaliland.

Puntland state leadership sends heartfelt condolence to the families, relatives and colleagues of those who have lost their lives in pursuit of humanitarian assistance to the most needed people in Somaliland as we expect that the authorities of Somaliland will do everything in their capacity to bring the criminals in Burao, Borama and Sheikh murders to justice.

The Statement Government of Puntland also expresses deep concern for the arbitrary expulsion by the Administration of law abiding Somali citizens, who are either Somalilanders themselves or long staying families and permanent residents of Somaliland, thus grossly violating their personal and human rights in this strange and culturally unSomali exercise.

Finally, Puntland State of Somalia had, from its inception, committed itself to good neighborliness with Somaliland and full cooperation on security and trade for mutual benefit.

Unfortunately, the authorities in Somaliland have been always reluctant to see the mutual advantage of such cooperation despite multiple unilateral moves towards serious good neighborly gesture on the part of Puntland State.

It is now therefore the sincere hope and expectations of the State of Puntland that the authorities in Somaliland give due attention to the safety of expatriates, guests and respect to personal and human rights and embark upon a new policy of peaceful coexistence between our two major parts of Somalia.

One area Puntland and Somaliland States can work together immediately is the relief and humanitarian assistance to the thousands of people seriously affected by the current drought, allowing a free access of international relief workers to the areas affected from both sides of the border, thus saving lives of human and livestock populations.
