Rwanda: Somali President arrives on official visit

Wed. January 24, 2007 08:19 am.

Bonny Apunyu

(SomaliNet) Somalia’s president Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed arrived in Rwanda on Tuesday yesterday for a two-day official visit.

The Somali leader was received at Rwanda’s Kigali International Airport by Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who was accompanied by a highly profiled delegation including Cabinet ministers and heads of diplomatic missions in Rwanda.

Somali leader Abdullahi Yusuf, whose country is torn apart by persistent conflicts, did not talk to journalists, yesterday.

President Yusuf was scheduled to meet and hold talks with counterpart President Paul Kagame at Village Urugwiro late yesterday.

By press time, the visiting President had visited Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre and was also due to visit Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST).

Both Presidents are expected to address the press today Wednesday.

Rwandan President’s Office issued a press release on Monday saying President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed’s visit followed his message of gratitude to Kagame over Rwanda’s readiness to assist his country “during the difficult period it is currently facing.”

Meanwhile, Rwanda was requested to contribute troops to a proposed African peacekeeping force in Somalia, but the government is yet to decide on the matter.

Somalia’s violence erupted when the country’s former president General Mohamed Siad Barre was overthrown in 1991, and the crisis remains unresolved sixteen years later.

Rwanda-Somalia: President seeks Kigali's help to foster reconciliation

24 Jan 24, 2007, 14:11

KIGALI, 24 January (IRIN) - Somalia's President Abdullahi Yusuf is on a visit to Rwanda to learn from that country's experience in national reconciliation and reconstruction and to discuss Rwanda's possible intervention to stop the cycle of violence in the Horn of Africa country, which has been in a state of civil war since 1991.

At a press briefing on Tuesday in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, Yusuf, who was flanked by his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagamé, said the time had come for Somalia to seek the advice and intervention of other countries in the region to help Somalia in its peacekeeping process and reconstruction and reconciliation efforts.

During a visit to the memorial museum of genocide on the Gisozi hill near Kigali, where 200,000 victims of the 1994 genocide are buried, Yusuf said Somali people could have a lot in common with Rwandans, especially the fact that both countries had experienced years of civil war and fratricidal conflicts.

He said conflict in his country had a potentially injurious effect on the region's security, saying each country in eastern Africa and the Horn should "feel concerned by this possible instability in order to restore peace and reconciliation among the Somali people.

"We believe our concerns have been understood by Rwandan officials and other neighbouring countries, and we feel now that in the near future, Somalia will start a new era of peace, reconstruction and reconciliation after 15 years of violence," he added.

Yusuf's remarks followed an indication by the Rwandan government that it was committed to assisting Somalia. However, Rwanda has not made a decision on whether or not to send its troops on a peacekeeping mission to Somalia.

In December, Ethiopian troops backed Somalia's Transitional Federal Government to oust the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) that had taken control of the capital, Mogadishu, and most of southern Somalia, since June 2006.

"From its experience in the years after the genocide of 1994, Rwanda as a country has made progress in national reconciliation and reconstruction. There are many aspects where this [country] can serve us as a model and adviser to enable us to go beyond the tragedy of the past years and build hope for the future," Yusuf said.

Mystic, Sheikh Sharif hasnt condemned the previous bombings by the Americans. He has not condemned the current bombings. What if he continues his silence. Would you call him a coward or covert agent? Take your pick.

^^^No but to some he is like Muqtada Al Sadr, the man can do no wrong, yet he was the one who called for Jihad, sent the children to war and then surrendered and is making a deal with the Kenyans and those darn Yanks. Give us a break lad.

^^ Thank you for stating the obvious. Did you know brown is a type of color?

He is the one highest ranking ICU officials. He was fond of holding press conferences before for trivial purposes. The least he can do now is hold a press conference to condemn this heinous American bombardment. Reporters have been trying to get to him. But the American security guards were keeping him sealed off from public. I wonder why? ;)

He needs the support of the Somalis before he worries about the support of some distant African country, which have their own problems to deal with.

Second I have raised that question about the Sharif long before you did. I will give Sheikh Sheriff the benefit of the doubt. The CIA may have deliberatly bombed Somalia after them publicizing their meeting with the Sheriff few days ago. Or maybe they had already picked the dates they are going to bomb Somalia, since so far they haven’t killed any of the alleged terrorists. That is if they even existed to start with.

Try using facts rather than coincidences to get your point across old man.

We have barely heard from the man, last time I checked he was against the Ethiopians, what gives you the idea that he will not be against American bombing. None of the ICU officials spoke out against the American bombing, well none I know of.

Use common sense….

And if he falls for the $$$ like the TFGoons then I would classify him with them. I will disregard him to the fullest.

You have a fantastic knack of asking idiotic questions. Surely that deserves an obvious remark @ the least.

Look,The man has no jurisdiction yeah? You want him to issue osama-nesque decrees while negotiating a better deal for his country? Seriously,Do you own a brain? Perhaps you should lease one from Sh.Fiiqi,he doesnt use it often yeah? icon_razz.gif

I dont get the analogy here sxb.The only comparison Mr Shareef & Mr Yussuf share is probably the circumstances that made them be in their current state of location. The Habashi & Americans is what they have in common. One was forcefully brought into his own Capital city on top of habashi tanks While another left his city amid flying bullets & migs.
