The Saudi Effect

Recommended Posts

Six people make the case for human rights abuse discussion amongst us. Not that their treatment is not important or anything. Let’s look back at history, what had happened in our country and the kinds of human rights atrocities that are still occurring. Recently, I heard of this case where a young Somali girl was burnt with gasoline because she had owed 21$, it’s not right.

We are outraged at the Saudis, because they execute 6 Somalis, but let’s be even more enraged by what’s happening in our country – people are dying, we can’t adopt a relativist’s perspective of human rights, and clearly judging by the remarks and opinions expressed thus far, we are no longer human rights relativists, we are moving towards the universalism camp. Human rights does not only apply to Somalis outside of Somalia, it applies to those at home too, let’s not forget that.

I know this might sound like I’m encouraging inflation on rights - where we overstate the rights that are being violated. Let’s not forget genital mutilation – and I know you cultural relativists are arguing human rights should be examined more carefully in different cultures. Than, let’s examine those six men, they died under Saudi law . Now all of the sudden we invoke group rights, lets not forgot those who are being abused everything in a country where procedural processing of does not exist. People die, government’s abuse citizens, people are being killed in Somali everyday, women are being sold as commodities – life sucks there. So get over the Saudi incident and stop human rights atrocities at home.
