Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — The Federal Government of Somalia has strongly criticised an unauthorised visit by Gideon Sa’ar,  Israel’s Minister of Foreign Affairs,  to Hargeisa, calling it a serious violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a press statement issued in Mogadishu today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Hargeisa, the administrative capital of Somaliland Administration, is “an integral and inseparable part of the sovereign territory of the Federal Republic of Somalia”. It added that any official engagement in Somali territory without federal approval is “illegal, null and void” and that the visit represented “an unacceptable interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign Member State of the United Nations”. The statement stressed that such actions go against international law, including the principles of the UN Charter and the African Union.

Somalia called on Israel to “immediately cease all actions that undermine Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity”. The government also urged the United Nations, the African Union and other international partners to clearly reaffirm their support for Somalia’s internationally recognised borders.
