Dhahar: Somali Public Radio's Badhan Branch Expected To Open Sunday

Dhahar: Earlier this month, thousands holding Somali Public Radio billboards turned out at Bender-Qasim International Airport in Bosaso city to express their excitement for Somalia’s first public radio. Somali Public Radio chairman Mr. Salah Donyale, landed in Somalia for the first time in twenty years and was received by a huge enthusiastic crowd. The project is certainly the first of its kind in the country and vows to reform marginalized regions, long neglected both locally and by the international community.

 

The organization was instituted by Somali Americans who saw the dire need for a public infrastructure that would spur economic growth and endorse democratic thoughts. Pursuant to this goal, the main Headquarter of the new Somali Public Radio (SPR) was opened immediately transmitting diverse programs to over 200 killometer radius.

 

After this astonishing success, the organization now announces plans of expansion in partnership with local communities. Reporters and broadcasting engineers of Somali Public Radio are now preparing to head to Badhan, the largest city in Sanaag region to partake in an opening ceremony scheduled Sunday July 4th. This branch, under the leadership of Ahmed Mohamed Heyran and A/rizak Ahmed Isse is expected to transmit to majority of Sanaag region’s far west as Erigavo district. Other branches in Kismayo, Bosaso and Mogadishu are slated to open soon, in catering to a nationwide demand.

 

Somali Public Radio is a non-profit organization currently undertaking public broadcast media reform in Somalia that aims to improve service delivery and accountability to citizens. The initiative was drawn from the premise that development and democracy cannot thrive without open and free public space where all issues concerning people’s lives can be aired and debated and which gives room and opportunity for locals to participate in decision making.
