My Backbone

When I was born did you no embrace me as your seed?

Were you not the one who taught me how to write and read?

To be strong and always follow my creed.

Were you not the one who told me to never follow and always lead?

When I was weak did you not fight for me and bleed?

When I was leaving you did you not get down on your knees and plead?

And with tear stained eyes did you not softly whisper god speed?

And wasn’t the plan for me to return to you when I succeed?

So why is it that you’re the one I chose to mislead?

Acted like the injured party and chose to backbite?

Had nothing good to say about you just spite.

Pretended like you were never a part of me,

Played the part of the citizen and not the refugee,

Than I wondered how many other thought like me,

Prayed not many for you would cease to be.

That was my wake up call and finally saw the light,

I no longer ignored you hollow cries at night,

Through time and space I reach for you with all my might,

I cannot deny you for that would be like saying am not black am white,

How can I forget you, you’re my birthright,

Somalia this poem for you I write,

You’ve watched me grow from a seed to a flower,

It’s only fair I return to plant your seed and help you re-power,

You filled my mind with rich history and knowledge,

It’s only fair I return to continue your history and you to acknowledge,

You’ve invested in me when I was just a simple nomad,

Turned by back on you and you didn’t even get mad.

Now I have discovered new territories and realize there is no place like home,

Without you am lost and headed for dome,

For only you can truly take care of one of your own,

And that is the reason why Somali I consider you my backbone.

"life"

Is It Because?

Why do we live in a free country?

Yet am considered to be from another century.

Why is it that I am told to speak my mind?

Yet people don’t like what they find.

Why do people look at me with pity and sadness?

Why do they think I should stop the madness?

Is it because I lack education?

Can’t be am the next generation.

Is it because I lack personality?

Or maybe don’t have enough morality.

Is it because of my belief?

Can’t be God is my relief.

It must be my beauty than.

What beauty you wonder,

The one that is hidden under.

I have big hazel eyes, chocolate brown skin and long black hair,

My kind of beauty exists however, it’s rare.

You think am telling you lies?

Am not just look into my big hazel eyes.

But wait...You can’t see me.

From my head to my feet I am covered with my Vail,

Though I live in a free country you think am in jail.

You see I cover because am a rare jewel,

And refuse to be a men sexual tool.

Now I know why you feel sorry for me,

However, I tell you don’t cause am educated, liberated and totally free.

"life"

Disguised

I want to let you in on a little secret,

One I did not mean to keep from you this long.

I’m not who you think I am,

I play the role of your buddy, your friend.

But my disguise is so thin,

I want to let you know but I don't know where to begin.

I’m surprised you haven’t seen right through me.

Am as transparent as the sea.

I’m the girl of your dreams masquerading as your best friend,

I wonder if I told you this, would you be able to truly comprehend.

Sometimes I want to rip off this mask but I am too scared,

Because I don't know if your completely prepared.

Am afraid that you’ll run away,

And I don't want to lose you okay.

So I decided that it’s better to live with a lie than expose my true feelings,

I know its not fair cause you have always been honest with all your dealings.

You see in life there are two types of girls,

The ones you grow out of and the ones you grow into.

I really hope I’m the latter,

Some how that will prove to me, that to you I matter.

I may not be the one you love today,

I hope that changes some where along the way.

I’ll let you go for now,

Knowing to love you always is my vow.

But hoping one day you’ll fly back to me because I think you’re worth the wait.

Walking Dead

I moved closer to hold your hand,

As you struggled, by your side I wanted to stand.

"Its ok to cry I whispered in your ear"

Within moments I felt your tears.

I held your 200 bound 6' foot 2 frame as though you were a child,

Not realizing that within you there was something savage and wild.

You held me so tight I couldn't breathe,

I tried to move out of your embrace.

But your body held me in place.

You grabbed and turned my face and crushed my lips on top of your,

Within seconds you were reaching for my drawers.

I pulled yours hands away,

For a minute is seemed as though you obeyed.

But slowly your hands found my breasts

At this point you had me half undressed.

Your body is so big and crushing mine

"Lets stop" I softly suggested,

You calmly ignored my request,

"Lets Stop" I loudly suggested,

Once again calmly you ignored my protest.

You held me down as you tore away at my clothes,

I fought hard but was no match for your blows

I feel your touch upon my naked skin,

Trying to push you away but you enter in.

My clenched fist lies lifelessly beside my body,

It was as though my mind and soul were disembodied.

After a couple life altering moments you gone,

While I lay there on the couch completely withdrawn.

I showered and washed and still I could not clean you away from me

The feeling of violation, of invasion and intrusion into my soul

That night I was hunted by flash backs of a dry abrasive sex,

Images of a cruel and unusual ex

Coercion, endless struggle, a stinging pain, an unmarked path.

Worries, a baby, Aid, Std, the aftermath.

I saw two eyes of flames in my sleepy dreams

My voice was silent for I could not scream.

What is a scream without breath?

What is half a heart labors where a full heart would fail?

This is a wounded heart grown old so young.

The damage you have done, the horror you have cause

I cannot even compare,

Though I loved you, you hurt me, and now hunts me in nightmares

Who am I?

I am a woman, a wife a mother

A daughter, a sister, a friend

I am the faceless girl from yesterday,

I am the girl from school, from work, from the market,

From the club the other night. I am the girl that you smile at when you pass her by

I am the dead girl walking.

I Turn To You

Where do I turn when my world is crashing down?

When it feels like the tide has come in and am about to drown.

When am confused and stand alone,

When my body aches to the very last bone.

When I have a million questions and not one answer,

When my existence is slowly being eaten away like a body with cancer.

When depression has become a friend I embrace,

And my mind feels like it’s lost through space.

I turn to you for you’re my comfort through the pain,

You’re my guiding light through the stormy rain.

You’re my strength and encouragement through life’s despair,

Am grateful to have your love and care.

For you are my Lord the creator of all,

When I need help to you I call,

As long as I believe you’ll never let me fall.

I thank you for making me a believer,

And not amongst the liars and deceivers.

I beg of you to guide me on the straight path,

And not amongst the one’s that will get your wrath.

I ask yet another favour, forgiveness for the sins I have committed.

To pardon me and let me be acquitted.

For you are mercy itself.

You are Allah.

“All praise be to you”
