NOW endorses Obama snubs Palin

Wed, 17 Sep 2008 12:27:07 GMT

The National Organization for Women (NOW) has given a cold-shoulder to John McCain's pick Sarah Palin, by endorsing Barack Obama.

According to Kim Gandy, the head of NOW, Palin's anti-abortion rights statements have given women rights groups a sense of urgency about taking a position in this presidential campaign.

NOW with 500,000 members had never been involved in presidential campaigns before.

"Palin is being portrayed as a supporter of women's rights... as a feminist, when in fact her positions on so many of the issues are really anathema to ours," Gandy said.

In reflection of Sarah Palin's Christian fundamentalist beliefs, other women's rights organizations, pushed along by a spontaneous anti-Palin movement among women, are also campaigning against her.

In Alaska over the weekend, a Welcome Home rally for Palin was dwarfed by a demonstration organized by Alaska Women Reject Palin.

A group of people in Alaska believe the fundamentalist governor has pushed an evangelical agenda in the northern state, also criticizing her belief in creationism.

Some analysts evaluate NOW's decision as a setback for John McCain's hopes of luring the millions of women who supported Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries.
