A year ago Ethiopia intervened in Somalia to install Abdullahi Yussuf as head of a Federal Democratic Government. Citing threats by the Union of Islamic Courts to Ethiopian territory, the Ethiopians swiftly overran southern Somalia and took the capital Mogadishu.

Since then resistance to the Ethiopians, and the Africa Union peacekeeping force which is supposed to replace them, has mounted leading to thousands of Somalis fleeing the capital, and creating a humanitarian disaster.

This discussion will analyse what has happened and seek ways towards peace and the restoration of Somali sovereignty.

Speakers:

Dr Ahmed Samatar (Dean, Institute for Global Citizenship, Macalester University)

Sahal Abdulle (Reuters)
