Backbiting and Gossip O ye who believe! Avoid suspicion as much (as possible): for suspicion in some cases is a sin: and spy not on each other nor speak ill of each other behind their backs. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Nay ye would abhor it... but fear the Lord: for the Lord is Oft-Returning Most Merciful. (49:12) The believer is a person from whom his neighbor is safe from harm. Truly, one of the most injurious acts a person can commit is to backbite or gossip about another, as is seen from the verse above that likens it to eating human flesh. Who would not be repulsed by such an act? Yet even those who claim to fear and believe in the Lord are all too ready to listen to useless and harmful words and to pass them on indiscriminately. There is a parable about a scholar who was the victim of gossip. The perpetrator realized his mistake and went to the man to apologize to him for having spread malicious rumors. The scholar forgave him, yet thereafter instructed him to take a sackful of feathers, cut it open, and scatter the feathers on the wind. Having done thus, the man asked him what else he should do. The scholar then told him to find and gather up each of the feathers — an impossible task, as impossible as erasing the harmful effects of ill-chosen words. This illustrates the damage done by false words and should serve as a warning of how important it is to avoid this sin. Gossip needn't be malicious in order to be harmful. Idle words spoken without thought can be just as damaging to a person. It is a symptom of that great tendency of man to concern himself with things that are none of his business, a tendency that, in this world, has been raised to an art form and is the foundation of much of what passes for entertainment in the media. People who do not concern themselves with the welfare of family or neighbors slaver over the latest tidbit about a perfect stranger who is labeled a celebrity. They neglect studies that would bring them closer to the Lord in order to read titillating gossip about this week's fallen idol and eagerly share unsubstantiated rumors hot off the presses as if it were revealed truth. Without guilt they sully the reputations of family and friends in the guise of giving advice, and earn for themselves a harsh punishment from the Lord. The believer, in contrast, recognizes that the tongue is one of the hardest parts of his body to control, and thus he uses every tool at his disposal to control it and not be a source of harm for his brother. He listens to the admonition of his Lord and seeks advice in His revealed Word: O ye who believe! Let not some men among you laugh at others: it may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): Nor let some women laugh at others: it may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames: Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness (to be used of one) after he has believed: And those who do not desist are (Indeed) doing wrong. (49:11) The believer guards his words as he would guard a precious jewel, and he would prefer to cut off his own tongue rather than use it to vilify his brother. He is well aware that his tongue will speak either for or against him on the Day of Judgment, testifying to his behavior. He avoids suspicion and does not seek out the faults of others and stays away from doubtful matters. Most importantly, he does not sit with those who engage in idle talk and gossip, and does not tolerate that it takes place in his presence. Thus the believer protects himself from a sickness that engulfs so many. The habit of gossip is difficult to break, and doing so requires great discipline and thought. The best discipline is silence, and busying oneself with productive learning in the company of good strong believers. It also is helpful to reflect on how we would feel to be the object of gossip, and to bear in mind the great mercy of the Lord covering up our shortcomings and sins. By reflecting on our own deeds and recognizing that Judgment Day will be a time when everyone's words and actions will be scrutinized by the Lord, we will be far too humbled to concern ourselves with the deeds of others.

Predestination And ordain for us in, this world that which is good, and in the Hereafter (that which is good), Lo! We have turned unto Thee. He said: I smite with My punishment whom I will, and My mercy embraceth all things, therefore I shall ordain It for those who ward off (evil) and pay the poor due, and those who believe Our revelations. (7:156) Belief in the Lord's Divine Decree is one of the pillars of faith. Yet, there are many who struggle to understand a concept that can be seen as quite esoteric. Philosophers throughout the ages have wrestled with the issue of free will, some relegating the Lord to the status of mere bystander, others stripping mankind of all responsibility for its actions. In between these two extremes lies the truth. The Lord created mankind and sustains it, yet each individual has the free will to determine whether he will accede to the Lord's leadership or be one of the rebellious. Key to understanding the Divine Decree, is knowledge of the fact that time is a creation of the Lord. As surely as He created the heavens and the earth, He created time. Because time is a creation of the Lord, He is not subject to its limitations. Therefore the terms beginning and end have no relevance to His Majesty. When we acknowledge that the Lord is free of time, we can now recognize that the end of mankind is as clear and immediate to Him as the beginning. To say that the Lord does not know what will happen to every person on the earth, or even every mote in the cosmos, is to place unacceptable limitations on He Whose knowledge encompasses all things. Therefore, 'before' mankind was even created, the Lord recorded the doings of each individual, his birth and his death, whether he will be rich or poor, and whether he will be of those in Paradise or in the Hellfire. Some consider this record to be proof that mankind has no free will, since everything about us was written before we were created. To try to look at it from a human perspective, let us imagine that we have recorded our favorite movie. We have watched it before, so we know the beginning and the end. We know that the hero will triumph, marry the beautiful princess, and live a long and happy life. At the midpoint of the movie, the plot is not suddenly going to change. This is simplistic but it underscores the fact that The Lord knows what we are going to do at any instant. He has an overview of creation, we do not. It is the inability to look at things from the Lord's point-of-view that frustrates and confuses many who strive to understand their place in the world. Man is subject to time. Try as we might, we cannot look into the future to see our fate. However, the Lord has created in us the natural urge to strive and better ourselves. We do not sit fatalistically waiting for His will to become manifest in us. We pray and we fast and we give charity and we hasten to do good deeds in order to secure our place in Paradise. It is better for man that he should not know his place, so he can strive and discipline himself. And truly, The Lord will make the path of righteousness easy for those who believe in Him, as he promises in His Holy Book: "So he who gives (in charity) and fears (The Lord) and in all sincerity testifies to the bests. We will indeed make smooth for him the path to bliss. But, he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, and gives lie to the best, We will indeed make smooth for him the Path to Misery." (92:5-10) The believer accepts that the Lord's Divine Decree is real, that what has happened to him could not have passed him by, and what passed him by could not have happened. This knowledge imparts a sense of serenity to the believer that is evident in the way he lives his daily life, as he surrenders to the will of the Lord and places his trust in Him. He knows that the Lord is just and will not burden any soul with more than it can bear, and that with the Lord lies knowledge of what is in every heart, today, tomorrow, and until the end of time.

1. Inimitable It dares you to disprove it. How? It says that humans cannot write a book like this even if they pooled all their resources together and got help also from the spirits. The Qur’an said this fourteen hundred years ago and yet no one has been able to disprove it. Billions of books have been written-but not another one like the Qur’an. 2. Incorruptible It is the only religious sacred writing that has been in circulation for such a long time and yet remains as pure as it was in the beginning. The Qur’an was kept intact. Nothing was added to it; nothing was changed in it; and nothing was taken away from it ever since its revelation was completed 1400 years ago. 3. Unsurpassable The Qur’an is God’s final revelation to humankind. God revealed the Torah to Moses, the Psalms to David, the Gospel to Jesus, and finally the Qur’an to Muhammad. Peace be upon Moses, David, Jesus and Muhammad. No other book will come from God to surpass His final revelation. 4. Indisputable The Qur’an withstands the test of time and scrutiny. No one can dispute the truth of this book. It speaks about past history and turns out right. It speaks about the future in prophecies and it turns out right. It mentions details of physical phenomena which were not known to people at the time; yet later scientific discoveries prove that the Qur’an was right all along. Every other book needs to be revised to accord with modern knowledge. The Qur’an alone is never contradicted by a newly discovered scientific fact. 5. Your Roadmap for Life and Afterlife The Qur’an is the best guidebook on how to structure your life. No other book presents such a comprehensive system involving all aspects of human life and endeavor. The Qur’an also points out the way to secure everlasting happiness in the afterlife. It is your roadmap showing how to get to Paradise. 6. God’s Gift of Guidance God has not left you alone. You were made for a reason. God tells you why he made you, what he demands from you and what he has in store for you. If you operate a machine contrary to it’s manufacturer’s specification you will ruin that machine. What about you? Do you have an owner’s manual for yourself? The Qur’an is from your Maker. It is a gift for you to make sure you function for success, lest you fail to function. It is a healing from God. It satisfies the soul, and cleans the heart. It removes doubts and brings peace. 7. Your Calling Card to Communicate with your Lord Humans are social creatures. We love to communicate with other intelligent life. The Qur’an tells us how to communicate with the source of all intelligence and the source of all life-the One God. The Qur’an tells us who God is, by what name we should address Him, and the way in which to communicate with Him. Are these not seven sufficient reasons for reading the Qur’an? apparent dome over the earth, background of the clouds, sun, moon, and stars. The blue color of the clear daytime sky results from the selective scattering of light rays by the minute particles of dust and vapor in the earth's atmosphere . The rays with longer wavelengths (the reds and yellows) pass through most readily, whereas the shorter rays (the blues) are scattered. An excess of dust, especially in large particles, causes scattering of many rays besides the blue, and the sky “fades” and becomes whitish or hazy. The sky thus is clearest in winter, in the morning, after a rain, over a mountain, or over the ocean. Leonardo da Vinci experimented with light and attempted an explanation of the sky's blue color. The work on light and its behavior by Sir Isaac Newton, Lord Rayleigh, and other physicists provided explanations of rainbows, sky color, mirages, and other atmospheric phenomena.
