Great News. Thanks Xudeedi 4 the update!

This is truly worrying development indeed..

Atam is a moderate Sheikh. He is no different than President Sheikh Shariif if you listen to his VOA interview and read it objectively.

Thankful, you are not an expert in Arabic cliches, quotes and words. If you free yourself from the chains of Islamophobia, Ngonge, our SOL forums contributor, explained in detail the context under which the word 'al-shabab" was used since Mr. Atam is a wadaad himself. You try to seek peace with your neighbors in this critical juncture of Somalia's disintegration. A top-down foreign policy did not create Puntland[/i]. Elders, Civil society, businesses and Politicians, created its peace and it's them who can resolve this issue. Let the Elders known for their probity, moral uprightness and as experts in the game of compromise resolve the issue.

Originally posted by N.O.R.F: Just finished reading: quote: According to his book, Perkins' function was to convince the political and financial leadership of underdeveloped countries to accept enormous development loans from institutions like the World Bank and USAID. Saddled with debts they could not hope to pay, those countries were forced to acquiesce to political pressure from the United States on a variety of issues. Perkins argues in his book that developing nations were effectively neutralized politically, had their wealth gaps driven wider and economies crippled in the long run. In this capacity Perkins recounts his meetings with some prominent individuals, including Graham Greene and Omar Torrijos. Perkins describes the role of an EHM as follows: Economic hit men (EHMs) are highly-paid professionals who cheat countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars. They funnel money from the World Bank, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and other foreign "aid" organizations into the coffers of huge corporations and the pockets of a few wealthy families who control the planet's natural resources. Their tools included fraudulent financial reports, rigged elections, payoffs, extortion, sex, and murder. They play a game as old as empire, but one that has taken on new and terrifying dimensions during this time of globalization. Norf, I read the first time it was released 4 or 5 years ago. I don't remember the exact date but it was on display @ the New Releases

What reply would you give him? Miya la iska hadlayaa saaxib just because a couple of ladies and some kids came out in a little demo? Awdal (if you hadn't noticed) took full part in the elections. If tiny demos mean breaking away from SL then those old ladies demonstrating in Hargeisa also want to break away. Dee naga daaya. Ngonge, Somaliduna waa hal reer, dhaqankooduna aad buu isu shabahaa, runtiina waa dad aan kala maarmin laakinse aan aqoon sidii lagu heli lahaa xal (solution) ay nabad iyo barwaaqo ugu waaraan. Somalia has 13% fertile land, only 2% has ever been used, let alone other sectors) Saxib, close to where I live in LA County (district), there are close to 12 Million people living in peace and harmony. We do not need to break up into mini states. If Somalia is divisible so as "Somaliland"

Cawke, I fully concur with you on PIS now rechristened as PIA--a shrewd move to reassure its American/western backers and financiers that reform in its techniques, methods and standard procedures for balanced representation and service has been put in place. The rise of the public against this independent apparatus reflects poorly on the leadership of PL which are now seen as "puppets" of western and regional intervention as far as restricting people's liberty to worship, work, live or seek refuge. I do think any reform would be inchoate and the underlying social problems won't go away that fast. The notorious PIS and its regime is derided all over Puntland. It is corrupt, weak and ruthless in its methods of hunting down terror suspects. What I really don't understand is what further benefit could be had from a clan-dominated, western-financed, security organization. Bosaaso had always been a peaceful and prosperous city. Once coined as the Boston of Somalia, this reputation has been under slippery slope. Alas, Somalis are inherenly clannish and more foreign intervention in one dimension (like security) will make things worse rather than drain the swamp that spawns extremism.

But you made this great point.. Security is not great lately and a very sour point. The Puntland administration needs to really address the PIS issue at least reform it and set procedures and protocols for the organization on how they must operate in the state.

Awdiles must demonstrate principles of Somaliway unity consistenly. They can't drift back and forth based on some power sharing system from an unrecognized state.

^Awdalites have given their full support to "Somaliland" project, yet Mr. Silanyo gave an important ministerial portfolio to a community whose majority belong to the Somalia's union army. Hence the early anger at his admin will keep on dragging..

^Fyi, if he does muster all the manpower and resources of his community, it would just be small potatoes compared to the major battles that Makhir region had endured. It is these battles that the Commisioner of the Secretary of the State for the British Empire recommended his colonial troops to withdraw from their "observation [military] posts by condoning the rebellious attitude" (his exact words) of the Makhiris. I have just highlighted or rephrased what your president said on air.

^Thankful, your leader is a crook and sociopath. A former corrupt official and alleged "pirate chief" according to the UN Monitoring Group. His arrogance has no limits. You can not cover the stench of Farole's coward appeal and divisive tactics on BBC radio. At least his predecessors of the clan had wielded an illusion of invincibility and they enjoyed showing it to the peaceful clans of the South. Despite Farole's shabby and vulgar terms at the media against the region, Mr. Atam denied to be a member of al-Shabaab. He said that he and his militia are from Galgala with grievances against both PL and PIS. He also said that it was his region that Puntland attacked and all he did was defend his land and people. And he vowed to defend himself should PL mount another round of attacks. He is orator and appears to be very confident with his defiant position against PL's authority. His main goal is to fight--and perhaps reverse--the long injustices perpetuated by PL's security sector in Bosasso and environs where his clan call home and form majority.

What do you expect from a warlord who attacked Garowe's parliament with his cousins and sons a few hours after he was sacked from his job. I along with Oodweyne and others even debated on that issue here @ SOL. (It's in the Archive)

Peace, if you had listened to VOA's interview with Atam, you would have developed a dispassionate view of the whole conflict. It's Farole who has committed a series of errors on his approach to resolving this issue. He broke an earlier agreement in Galgala. He then bypassed the Elders' intervention and request to resolve this issue in a peaceful solution. Then he declared a war on them and labeled the region as a "terrorist haven" by appealing to the world to come to his aid. He also appealed to the animalistic instinct of his sub-clan family from all walks of life to attack (defend from his perspective) a different region. Prior to the two days before Karin, he ordered the deportation of hundreds of IDP's under the false pretext that they were threat to the city of Bosasso. Though condemned by international human rights organizations and UNHCR, this move was his ill-designed strategy to solicit a public support for his "campaign of full security crackdown", one that seeks a new indefensible position to justify his war on the people of Galgala and western region. Considering all of this fact, who is destryong Puntland peace or turning one community against another. Besides abandoning the people of SOOL and Buhoodle while hypocritically rallying for the support of his clan from all walks of life and urging them to bear arms and kill another community, does this warlord have any moral position left to unite what is already left of this fragile clan-system?

Lol, my people in Galgala and Bosaso shall prevail over Farole's double-dealings and cries over the media. Reer Garowe has nothing to do with this conflict spawned by an individual who heads an independent and foreign-financed security organization. -

Originally posted by Peace Action: Nassir give it up and stop defending Atam. I am calling for a reconciliation and for peace. Don't you see the injustice against the Western Bari community and the existential risk they are posed to their sources of livelihoods such as farming and the ownership of their mineral rich land? According to the International Crisis Group, PIS, which is on a direct payroll for the West, ($400 each soldier a month), is predominated by Farole's clan. Farole has no power over its independent operation and it is accused of many human rights violations through the arbitrary orders of Osman Diyano--a former commander of Ade Muse's clan militia.

Donyale is not a minister. what if Ilkojiir becomes the next puntland president? don't you think others will also have the right to give him a hard time? PL is not a recognized state of a permenant Somali government and it might never will. It's temporary solution to the anarchic situation of Somalia. This project of Federalism (initiated by the SRRC faction and Abdullahi Yousuf as Chairman) has yet to succeed as a good model of Somali Governance.
