  1. Scorpion sista; Thank you, you have pretty much covered most aspects of it. In fact My grandfather died of liver failure as well. My main concern is; "is it lately on the rise for some reason or did people suffer/die from it but no one was aware of it?" Even though there will be, most likely, an increase of these diseases in our generations as you mentioned due to the life style many youngster chose to live but most of the people who suffered and died from it are older generation (parents/grandparents). One main thing which happens is lack of blood screening in Somalia! I was quite shocked when I found out in some places people donate blood for their relative who will receive the transfusion immediately without the screening. Lack of annual medical check up or screening is another contributing factor. What about fatty diet (Subag iyo qaras bax) we like to eat? would it exacerbate already injured liver since the failing liver can hardly metabolise anything let alone high fat diet? Any more input will be appreciated. BTW HCV is easily diagnosed- it produces antibodies against the virus, the bad thing about it is 50% of infected people will become chronic carriers and will develop cirrhosis and it deosnt have vaccination unlike Hep B. Ayoub_Sheikh, Hepatitis A and E are the two viruses which are transmitted fecal-oral route (with infected food, water etc) and both of these which mainly infect the liver do not leave long time affect on this organ that could lead to failure or death. Another thing which is related to food and can cause to these problems is something called Aflatoxin- fungi found on crops- I dont know if its present in Somalia. If you have real data on this, please do post it.

Very people we love to imitate(if you meant the west) arenot contracting HIV/AIDS and dying from it like the people in Africa and Asia plus they also have prevention methods and treatments for it. So if any people going down with this virus are those in the other world. Even in USA the most affected ones happen to be African Americans. Its true practicing Islam properly will help prevent the disease but lets not forget there are certain things which might increase the spread as well. [/QB] as far as the biology study is concerned, whether or not aids mutates humans isn't relevant. the fact of the matter is that its a cureless disease that has and continues to wreak havoc among the world's population, with extremely adverse effects in africa. period. [/QB] Biology is the key which will, one day, lead to right therapy.

  6. I just heard another Somali who is suffering from Liver Failure. The past year and two there have been many Somalis who died from Liver diseases and/or their complications and God knows how many are unaware if they have it until its too late. What do you all think of the main causes? Any suggestion(s) about preventions?

  8. Raula, True, There are so many epidemics in Somalia. But Hope only wont keep HIV/AIDS epidemic away. There was an appeal done by doctors about HIV/AIDS in Somalia around 2001 who stated the STDs were found quite significantly in many people. There are Somalis infected in the diaspora as well and hardly how many people do you know/hear who do blood test for HIV before they get married?

  10. Latiif, I agree with you. The whole concept of forum and chat is deduced to this matter by some. Please lets keep love affairs for private and use the forum for the other beneficial purposes.
  11. Quote... Sticking the arms to the sides of the body, in rukoo' or sujood, and sticking the belly to the thighs in sujood. This comes down to the firqah one follows as many asians pray this way. Quote... The Prophet (SAW) said: "I am commanded to prostrate on seven Bones the forehead and the nose, the two hands [palms], the two knees, and the two feet." (Sahih Muslim) One hand alone consists more than 25 bones let alone the combinations of all bones of the surfaces mentioned in the Hadith!

  16. Lambda, Good Topic. Is this the same research that showed some individuals have different Cytotoxic T cell Lymphocyte which destroy the Virus in which researchers are working on to find Vaccine? I cant imagine the pain and complications Sickle Cell Anemic people live in and how the gene mutation occured in response to Malaria!

  18. Scorpion_Sista, Thank you. so do I. About AIDS, treatment is the big factor. Current management do not completely treat the virus but It suppresses the viral load which further delays/slows its damage to Immune system, thus prolongs life. In africa, its sad! As the saying goes; "prevention is the best treatment" -thats what people need to do and prevention comes from awareness! Our own people believe AIDS is for the Gaalo only! Lambda, That sure will be interesting. Please do post it (if you want as a separate topic). As Scorp said most of the resistance to HIV were found in caucasians- its about 1% in the population who has been exposed to the virus but didnot contract-They were found to have mutations of certain receptors on Immune cells (where the virus usually binds). It was more pronounced those who were homozygous (Herited 2 copies of the gene mutations) than heterozygous.

  22. Bokero, Mood swings/disorders are major depression and Bipolar (Mania). In Major depressions, the person feels down, hardly sleeps, cant concentrate, might feel guilty all the time and hopelessness.... some might be having suicidal thoughts or do it. These episodes are not there all the time but might be precipitated by certain incidents. Bipolar or Mania people suffer from depression and Euphoria (elevated mood). They experience one a time. In Manic episode they show high self esteem or feel they are very important (He/she is the chosen one for presidency or highly respected position), they also hardly sleep, have so many racing thoughts and ideas, Less attentive and worst of all involve in certain activities so much without thinking like spending money, sex, etc. In split personality, the person is usually emotional and exhibits behaviors like certain things/people are eiher good or bad in their book. they dont have anything in between. they also show self destructive behaviors like cutting, burning or more harmful ways. Some might have major depresion or Mania along with this. Genetics play a role in these disorders. All of these are prone to drug abuses.

  24. Jamilah, MPD is more or less the way you described in your first posting. Its NOT the same with the term Jinn and its theories. "Jinni qof galay iyo ka dhex hadlay" are more like psychotic disorders ie. schizophrenia in which the person have hallucinations (visual, auditory etc), bizarre behavior, dellusions etc which lead to social and/or occupational dysfunction or deterioration. I used to hear those stories back in Somalia but only saw 1 Somali girl whom they (her family) beat her and read Quran on her to chase the jinn away with no improvement. BTW, Split personality and schizophrenia are completely different!
