  1. UAE expands military ties with Somaliland as Somalia looks on Thursday February 20, 2025 Somaliland’s military chief, Maj. Gen. Nim’an Yusuf Osman, meets with Lt. Gen. Eisa Saif Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces, to discuss military cooperation and security partnerships. Hargeisa (HOL) — The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Somaliland are deepening military and security cooperation as the Gulf state expands its influence in the Horn of Africa, a move that could further strain relations between Somalia’s federal government and Abu Dhabi. Somaliland’s military chief, Maj. Gen. Nim’an Yusuf Osman, held talks in Abu Dhabi with Lt. Gen. Eisa Saif Mohammed Al Mazrouei, the UAE’s Chief of Staff, focusing on defence collaboration, military modernization, and security assistance. According to a statement from Somaliland’s military, the discussions covered UAE support in training, military technology, and logistics to bolster Somaliland’s defence capabilities. The meeting coincided with Osman’s participation in an international defence exhibition in Abu Dhabi until February 23. With access to the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea shipping lanes, Abu Dhabi has long been interested in expanding its military presence in Berbera, which could allow it to project power deeper into East Africa and counter rivals such as Turkey, which backs Mogadishu. Reports indicate that the UAE is seeking to establish a military base in the region, further solidifying its foothold in East Africa. For Somaliland, deepening military ties with the UAE is about security and a broader push for international recognition. Since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, Somaliland has sought foreign partnerships to bolster its claim for statehood. Somaliland’s President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro has also taken two official trips to the UAE within the past month, reflecting the growing diplomatic and security ties between Hargeisa and Abu Dhabi. His most recent visit saw him participate in the World Government Summit, where regional security and governance were key topics. Somalia’s federal government has consistently rejected foreign military deals with Somaliland, asserting that such agreements undermine Somalia’s territorial integrity. The UAE’s military and economic footprint in Somaliland has been controversial since 2017 when Dubai-based DP World signed a deal to develop Berbera Port in a partnership that also involved Ethiopia. Somalia’s parliament denounced the agreement as illegal, declaring that all foreign investments must be negotiated through Mogadishu. Tensions reached a boiling point in 2018 when Somali authorities seized $9.6 million from a UAE aircraft in Mogadishu, accusing Abu Dhabi of financing regional militias. In response, the UAE ended its military training program for Somalia’s national army, shifting its focus to direct security cooperation with Somaliland and Puntland. The UAE’s growing role in Somaliland coincides with Ethiopia’s controversial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hargeisa, which includes potential Ethiopian naval access to Berbera. The agreement triggered a diplomatic crisis between Somalia and Ethiopia, further complicating regional alliances.

  5. Somaliland lifts Hargeisa entertainment ban Thursday February 20, 2025 FILE - Ahmed Mohamed Adaad, the Governor of Maroodi Jeex region, addresses the media in Hargeisa, Somaliland, on February 19, 2025. Adaad initially announced a ban on entertainment events in the city, citing religious and cultural concerns, but later reversed the decision following public backlash. Hargeisa (HOL) — The regional administration of Maroodi Jeeh has reversed a ban on music concerts and entertainment events in Hargeisa, just hours after issuing the directive, following widespread criticism from the public and artists. The initial order, issued by Governor Ahmed Mohamed Adaad on February 19, 2025, prohibited all nighttime music performances in hotels and entertainment venues, citing religious and cultural concerns. “Effective immediately, all music performances and entertainment events in Hargeisa are prohibited, as they contradict our Islamic values and noble traditions,” the directive stated. The move sparked immediate backlash, with critics accusing the administration of censorship and politically motivated restrictions on artistic expression. Among those affected was popular Somali singer Haboon Nuura, who had already faced restrictions in Mogadishu before jeopardizing her scheduled performance in Hargeisa. By the end of the day, Governor Adaad rescinded the order, telling BBC Somali that the decision had been misinterpreted. “The initial directive was meant to uphold public decency and moral values, but it was taken out of context,” he said. “Concerts can proceed, but with new conditions, including limitations on late-night performances.” The abrupt policy reversal has drawn mixed reactions. Some view it as a necessary response to public pressure, while others argue that it highlights inconsistent governance by Somaliland authorities. Daaha Gaas, the head of the Dayax Band music group, criticized the government, claiming it had unfairly targeted his group. “The administration cut our funding because we supported the Kulmiye party during the election. This is political revenge,” he alleged. Hargeisa has been a prominent cultural hub for decades, known for its contributions to Somali music, poetry, and theatre. The city has hosted major cultural events, making it a focal point for artistic expression in the Somali-speaking world. While Governor Cadaad has assured that concerts can continue under new regulations, the specifics of those rules remain unclear. “The government will establish formal guidelines on how entertainment events will be conducted,” he stated. “A national framework will determine future approvals and oversight.” For now, musicians and fans in Hargeisa are relieved that the ban has been lifted, though uncertainty lingers over potential future restrictions on the entertainment industry

  12. Somalia, Ethiopia begin technical talks in Turkey on maritime access Monday February 17, 2025 Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (C) hosts Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (L) and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (R) in Ankara for trilateral discussions aimed at strengthening regional cooperation. (Photo: Turkish Presidency) Mogadishu (HOL) — Mogadishu (HOL) — A day after Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met to restore ties, officials from both nations have begun technical talks in Ankara to implement the Ankara Declaration and discuss Ethiopia’s bid for maritime access through Somali territory. Somali Minister of Information Daud Aweis confirmed his participation in the discussions, stating that the delegation's primary focus is on implementing agreements reached in previous diplomatic engagements. "I have arrived in Ankara to join #Somalia delegation for the kick-off of the first round of technical discussions between Somalia and Ethiopia, aimed at exploring ways to implement the Ankara Declaration," Aweis wrote on X. "Somalia is committed to fostering peace, strengthening cooperation, and building diplomatic relations grounded in mutual understanding and respect," he added. The talks come as Ethiopia continues to push for a maritime trade corridor, a demand that has fueled geopolitical disputes in the Horn of Africa. On January 1, 2024, Ethiopia signed an MoU with Somaliland that proposed granting Addis Ababa access to a 19-kilometer stretch of coastline near Berbera for 50 years. The deal, which included potential Ethiopian recognition of Somaliland's independence, triggered a strong rebuke from Somalia's federal government, which denounced the agreement as an infringement on its sovereignty. Somalia has insisted that any maritime agreement must be negotiated exclusively with the federal government in Mogadishu and must comply with international law. The technical committees, composed of representatives from both governments, are expected to assess the feasibility of a framework where Ethiopia could gain controlled access under Somali oversight. Turkey, which maintains strong diplomatic and military ties with Somalia, has previously acted as a mediator in regional disputes. While Ankara played a key role in brokering the December 2024 Ankara Declaration, it remains unclear whether Turkey is actively facilitating these discussions or simply hosting the Somali delegation. The outcome of these negotiations could reshape regional alliances and power dynamics in the Horn of Africa. A mutually beneficial agreement may enhance economic cooperation and regional stability. At the same time, failure to reach a consensus could escalate tensions and embolden insurgent groups such as al-Shabaab, which have historically exploited political disputes for recruitment and influence

  14. the thing is umay gefin wax xamar ku caydey ma jirin waxaas oo dhan walaga sameynaya do these reer xamar even understand the lyrcs of the song they are so angry about taasabaan is weydinayaa
  15. The song celebrating Somaliland and its close relations with neighbouring countries was in no way an insult to Mogadishu or reer mogadishu they might have percieved it that way ; indeed, it did not concern them at all. Furthermore, she was not even the songwriter she merely performed it.
  16. It is rather hypocritical on the part of the youth from Mogadishu, for they were the very ones who extended the invitation to her in the first place. She would not have gone there had she not been invited by them. Yet, upon her arrival, they responded with threats and she received threats , and they refused her a platform in xamar, and ultimately cancelled her show. and thats how it went
