  2. Forget the Sopranos, it's all about the Wire.

  4. Thanks, I'll check the links out when I'm at my computer.
  5. He ran into a camera, I posted a vid on the first page lol. PSA -- Gawker is fundraising to buy and publish the tape, you can donate here: http://gawker.com/we-are-raising-200-000-to-buy-and-publish-the-rob-ford-508230073 They already have 28k, and it was half of that when I last checked lol. I just donated.
  6. ^^ it's plausible when you consider that census figures rely on national origins (Somalia) but miss all the Somalis who come from or through other countries as immigrants to Canada. I'm sure all the TO folks here would agree that the number is awfully low.
  7. Blackflash;951646 wrote: Wouldn't it be better if they just refrained from constantly referring to the alleged ethnicities of those involved? If the optics are an issue, having a related column mentioning Somalis would only serve to further ingrain the drug dealer's ethnicities in to the readers' minds. It should have never been mentioned (the original Gawker story, for example, simply said the men were speaking a language other than English between each other), but it happened and I believe the story that went to print had 11 mentions of Somali, almost as many times as they mentioned crack in the article (12 times). So responsible journalism means addressing and admitting their mistake in that same forum.
  8. Update -- my brother spoke to the Toronto Star's public editor today, and she and the editor in chief agree that the article went too far, and they've made the reporters and the rest of the newsroom aware that the unnecessary use of "Somali" is insensitive and socially irresponsible. She's considering putting out a column this weekend about it, so will keep you guys posted if that appears.

    Love song

I heard this song on the radio about 20 times during my drive today, it's also sweet:
  10. Blackflash;951481 wrote: Why can't his some of his detractors seem to understand that regardless of his embarrassing theatrics, he's an elected official with one year left on his term? I've never liked the guy's politics, especially when considering his terrible transit policies. Also Safferz, if you'd known of his rapport with the Etobicoke-North community (specifically Rexdale) you would not have accused him of being a racist for saying something that many Torontonians, of all ethnicities, have voiced their concerns over. He's a terrible orator and lacks to ability to think before speaking, but a racist he is not. His rapport with certain neighbourhoods is irrelevant, he's a politician. He's made many racist comments, and it doesn't matter how many people in Toronto agree with them, the fact remains that it is racism.

  17. Fartun Abdi is passionate about preserving her generation's oral histories. Abdi is a member of and researcher with the Sheeko Project, which started in 2011 to document and digitize oral stories of Somali diaspora youth. The project is a collaboration between the University of Minnesota's Immigration History Research Center (IHRC), campus faculty, staff, and students. “What does it mean to be Somali? Somali American? Somali diasporan? That’s what this project tried to accomplish,” she said. “Sheeko” means story in Somali. Abdi’s role in Sheeko came out of her own research on young Somali identities. Later, with guidance and support from the IHRC, Abdi worked with a group of student researchers to record oral histories of Somali Americans and British Somalis between the ages of 18 and 25, in the Twin Cities, Minnesota and London, England. Some of the themes of Sheeko’s oral stories include education, religious identity, understanding one’s homeland, and gender issues particularly in relation to women in Islam. Abdi presented some of the findings at IHRC’s Somali American Research Series in late April. A digital archive of the edited video footage is now available on the IHRC website, and the Sheeko project has its own website, which is available for the public to see for generations to come. “Trust me, five years from now, ten years from now these experiences are not going to be similar to youth in the near future. They’re going to experience completely different struggles,” Abdi said. She encourages everyone to document their community’s stories: “If you don’t have anything like that for your community, make sure you do it.” Sheeko website, and interviews can be found at UMN's Immigration History Research Center. Important work!

That's for you and your wife to decide. But my point is that there's nothing particularly natural about that arrangement, these gender roles are cultural/societal not biological.

There has been a media blitz against this guy every since he took office, this fatso can't be beaten. In another news, has any one felt an earth-quick in Toronto in the last 10 min? It's amazing, isn't it? But I hope media outlets can acquire the tape soon and have experts verify that it's him, the last thing we want is Rob Ford buying the tape himself. Those who have viewed the video are certain it's him. He will finally be finished after this. I thought I felt an earthquake, but I was in my car at a red light so I wasn't sure.
  20. Alright I feel better now. This is for you SP:
  21. Ah enjoy I'm still steaming, listening to Beyonce to calm me down lol
