    Pearls

There is a woman in Somalia

Scraping for pearls on the roadside

There's a force stronger than nature

    Keeps her will alive

    This is how she's dying

    She's dyin' to survive

Don't know what she's made of

I would like to be that brave

She cries to the heaven above

There is a stone in my heart

She lives a life she didn't choose

And it hurts like brand new shoes

    Hurts like brand new shoes

There is a woman in Somalia

The sun gives her no mercy

The same sky we lay under

    Burns her to the bone

    Long as afternoon shadows

It's gonna take her to get home

    Each grain carefully wrapped up

    Pearls for her little girl

    Hallelujah

    Hallelujah

She cries to the heaven above

There is a stone in my heart

She lives in a world she didn't choose

And it hurts like brand new shoes

    Hurts like brand new shoes

Malika, Or my favourite, you can shower off the disease!

I never knew this was a thing until the Jacob Zuma used that excuse before he ran for president...while he was on trial for raping a woman he knew was HIV positive...and now he's president, shheeeesh!

Thanks for the very PG explanation Ngonge :D

  3. Hopefully the children will go to good homes and good people..that's all we can hope for!

According to the legal arrangements between countries, we can, in fact, do this. But Somalia has not signed the international agreement,” Şahin said regarding the feasibility of adopting Somali children in Turkey.

I really hope that Somali government does its job and takes every precaution to make sure the kids are protected. Last thing they need is to be adopted by a family with cruel intentions.

is there any way that this treasure could be be brought in the earth

is this a serious question? lol they said the planet is 4,000 light years away and according to wikipedia 1 light year = "just under 10 trillion kilometres"

astronomy is the weirdest field...I'm usually really skeptical about what they say b/c it's mostly just speculation.

  5. Anyone in the forum from Philly? Is the rain in PA as bad as they said it would be? Was supposed to travel there for the weekend but the bus was cancelled because of the storm.

95% ends up in middle persons!

That kind of misinformation is what stops a lot of ppl from donating and leads to more ppl dying senselessly.

The money is going into programs, medicine, infrastructure...FOOD. If it was just going into the middle-man's pockets, hundreds of thousands might be dead by now.

  7. In theory I think I would be afraid of snakes too..never came across any so I can't be too sure..

I know for sure I'm scared of squirrels though... especially when they're on walls or trees. If I see one on a tree above my head I will go the far way around! I keep picturing them flying down on me and scratching me to death with their little claws!

  8. just trying to think of something like this will ever happen in Toronto...probably not but you never know especially since this happened in Ottawa earlier this week:

    " frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

somehow 40 black kids decided to get together and rob a convenience store...maybe it's just the beginning?!

    :D

me too! I kept refreshing my browser..

I like the new look for the most part..it's simple and clean but I feel there's a bit too much white space and not enough contrast b/w the grey writing and the background...

Once you put your foot on Canadian soil, you'll forget your own tribe because their attitude towards life is different. You get the odd tribalists but general public are kind and welcome you with open hearts.

True! In my 20+ years here, I was asked my tribe only a handful of times...and if it was a peer asking me, I responded with "I'm from the tribe of STFU".:P

Did anyone else like me when they first heard the news of the Oslo bombing, pray and make dua that it was not a Norwegian Somali? You know, like the British Pakistanis who committed the bombings in the UK?

I was so relieved that it was some blonde Norwegian and not a Somali or even a Muslim.

I've been unplugged for a few days and so behind on the news...you mean it wasn't a muslim? Thank goodness!!! So relieved!

Read the article about it late Friday and it mentioned alqeida and Muslims that were upset against the govt. to make it worse a douchebag co-worker went on a rant about terrorism and Muslims...just wait till I see him next week...

  12. Sadly, I don't think we have a very philanthropic mindset like some other cultures do. That said, we do support each other in different ways.

Doing something to help doesn't have to be a grand gesture, it's simple

    - donate as much as you can afford to an organization you trust

    - spread the word about the famine to friends, classmates or colleagues

    - someone mentioned that about a workplace giving program..that's a great idea!

also be very careful when you're donating to unfamiliar ngos...in every crisis, countless 'organizations' come out of the woodworks and cannibalizes would-be donations. Even if they have good intentions, the money is eventually wasted because they don't have the resources to do what more established organizations can do on the ground. As much as people hate on big orgs like unicef, you can't deny how much they are helping on-site.

Last thing... don't try to be a hero...this is not the time for self-promotion or attention seeking... We don't care about your wonderful new organization or your plan to visit the camps to see what's happening. donate or get the eff out of the way.

  13. Hey Juxa how did you like Vancouver/Victoria? I'm going there in a couple of weeks with no plans or idea of what to do! Maybe you can PM your itinerary?)
