During the space of a week the spouse remains with his espoused, scarcely ever venturing out of the hut; his friends avoid him, and no lesser event than a plundering party or dollars to gain, would justify any intrusion. If the correctness of the wife be doubted, the husband on the morning after marriage digs a hole before his door and veils it with matting, or he rends the skirt of his Tobe, or he tears open some new hut-covering: this disgraces the woman’s family. The Somal know none of the exaggerated and chivalrous ideas by which passion becomes refined affection amongst the Arab Bedouins and the sons of civilisation, nor did I ever hear of an African abandoning the spear and the sex to become a Darwaysh. Their “Hudhudu,” however, reminds the traveller of the Abyssinian “eye-love,” the Afghan’s “Namzad-bazi,” and the Semite’s “Ishkuzri,” which for want of a better expression we translate “Platonic love.”25 This meeting of the sexes, however, is allowed in Africa by male relatives; in Arabia and Central Asia it provokes their direst indignation. Curious to say, throughout the Somali country, kissing is entirely unknown. Children are carried on their mothers’ backs or laid sprawling upon the ground for the first two years26: they are circumcised at the age of seven or eight, provided with a small spear, and allowed to run about naked till the age of puberty. They learn by conversation, not books, eat as much as they can beg, borrow and steal, and grow up healthy, strong, and well proportioned according to their race.

A blind man shook his hand and responded with 'that is not the hand of a Muslim' so i've been told. A geel jire saw where Burton peed when he was in the miyi and commented that he was either: a) not circumcised b) standing up when peeing

Shiekh Bashir allah yarxamu. Xan, ever heard of Richard Burton? Middle Years After those seven years in India he returned to recuperate with his mother and sister in France, where he wrote four books on India in the next three years and planned his next adventure: entering Mecca disguised as a Muslim hajj. This feat, which if he were discovered would have resulted in his summary execution by beheading or crucifixion, was not the first time that a non-Muslim had breached the holy city. But Burton wrote about his trip, where he posed as an Afghani physician [image], (Pilgrimage to El Medinah and Mecca, 1855-56) as more than a travel narrative or tale of adventure. His work captured the customs and morals of the Muslim peoples he encountered, in a manner that modern anthropologists call "ethnology". When the Muslims eventually found that he had secretly sketched the ka'aba while others prayed and lived to write about it dispassionately, and that Burton had expressed often his admiration for Muslim customs and beliefs, and that he spoke Arabic so fluently, they ignored the insult saying that he really was an Arab. Before returning in triumph to England, Burton set out to to enter the forbidden Muslim city of Harar, ostensibly to establish horse trading routes. All non-believers who had entered this Somalian city before Burton had been executed, and in this Burton became the first white man to enter and leave alive. He wrote about this as First Footsteps in East Africa. On leave again in 1854, Burton went again to Somaliland in eastern Africa with John Speke to find the source of the Nile. Their party was attacked by Somali tribesmen; Speke was seriously injured and Burton's jaw was pierced by a spear. He returned to England to recuperate, when the Crimean War broke out. After his recovery, in July 1855, he went to the Crimea to volunteer in the war against Russia. Burton trained Turkish irregulars at the front in the Dardanelles, but saw no action himself. The first to discover he wasnt a Muslim was a blind Somali man and a reer miyi. How did they know? source Munira, i know the fam your talking of.

French Coach Troussier Affirms His Conversion to Islam The French former coach of the Moroccan football team, Philippe Troussier (now Omar) has affirmed that he has converted to Islam along with his wife Dominique (now named Amina), MAP news agency reported. Troussier, 51, who coached South Africa and Japan at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups respectively, said that “my conversion to Islam is a way of harmonizing my faith with my host country, the Morocco that I love and which loves me as well. It is an act of love and respect.” The French coach performed the prayer on Friday and attended a ceremony to celebrate his conversion. The ceremony took place in Rabat where the couple lives. Troussier pronounced the shahadah (Islamic declaration of belief: "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger") before two witnesses, according to the website mekkaoui.net. Omar and Amina Philippe and Dominique Troussier are now Omar and Amina. The news was no surprise for the friends of the French coach, since he has always shown a particular interest to Islam. Troussier told the press that he feels uneasy since the spread of the news, adding that his conversion is personal and he did not seek to reveal it. In an interview with Afrik.com, the coach said “the information was spread behind my back; I think that one of my friends leaked the news.” As some sources reported that Omar and Amina Troussier have adopted two Moroccan girls, the French coach told Afrik “it is not adoption, but I have two children under my roof, I do protect and educate them. They still contact their family.” The Moroccan French language Daily, L'Opinion, hailed Troussier's conversion, describing the event as “a magnificent and wonderful surprise.” The paper said “as Muslims we are happy to see such a strong and well recognized personality as Philippe Troussier become part of this religion of peace and tolerance." "Welcome Omar and Amina to the Kingdom of the All Powerful, the Kingdom of the Truth," it wrote. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * This story first appeared on MoroccoTimes.com. Thinking of Others Before Yourself A Muslim Woman's Reflections on Charity By Zabrina Abu Bakar Freelance Writer – Malaysia When I was young, my father used to repeatedly tell me a story of an uncle of mine who was one of the most generous persons my father had ever met. He was a man who didn't seem to know the existence of the word "selfish." He would help others out, even though he wasn't in a good position to do so at that time. It was said that once my uncle gave away 50 cents to help another person who was in dire need. You may scoff, right? 50 cents? So what? Well, 50 cents was a whole lot of money back then in the 1940s. But that's not even the point. There is something more significant here. He gave away 50 cents when he only had a dollar with him! I did ponder on the beautiful and kind heart he seemed to possess. What made him give away half of what he had in his pocket at that time, knowing very much that he might need the money later? What triggered him to do such a kind act? Wasn't he afraid that he wouldn't be able to replace what he had given away? Don't you think it is simply great to receive twofold and more of what you gave away? If we are hungry and only have a piece of cake, do we divide the cake into two and share it with the next person? If we are in the desert and only have a glass of water, do we share half of it with someone else? Do we give away half of our clothes to someone who needs them? Half of our food? Our shoes? Our books? Our money? American comedian Peter Marshall once said,"The measure of life is not its duration, but its donation" (Brainyquote.com) No wonder so many people remembered my uncle as a wonderful man long after he passed away. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "No wealth (of a servant of Allah) is decreased because of charity" (At-Tirmidhi). And also God said in the Qur'an what means: {If you lend unto Allah a goodly loan, He will double it for you and will forgive you, for Allah is Responsive and Clement.}(At-Taghabun64:17) Don't you think it is simply great to receive twofold and more of what you gave away? If we live by that principle, we won't have any fear of not having enough, of not being adequate, of losing what we have, of doing charity, of serving the needy, of extending a helping hand. Have you ever heard the quote "Give and you shall receive"? The principle is pretty clear: If we want to receive, we should give first. The saying doesn't say receive and then give. It doesn't tell us to become the recipient and then only when we get richer we can donate. How many times have we postponed our good intention to give away charity by giving excuses like "If I am a millionaire, I will donate to the charity" or "If I am paid more, I will donate some money"? Do you think it's a wonder why we are not millionaires still? If there is no giving, there is no receiving. A man asked Prophet Muhammad(peace and blessings be upon him), "O Allah's Messenger! What kind of charity is the best?" Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "To give in charity when you are healthy and greedy, hoping to be wealthy and afraid of becoming poor. Don't delay giving in charity till the time when you are on the deathbed, when you say, 'Give so much to so-and-so and so much to so-and so,' and at that time the property is not (really) yours, but it belongs to so-and-so (that is, your inheritors)." (Al-Bukhari) Prophet Muhammad's Generosity (peace and blessings be upon him) Prophet Muhammad's generosity (peace and blessings be upon him) attracted people to him. For example, a man requested a large flock of sheep from Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him what he asked for. Then the man went back to his tribe announcing how charitable Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was to the point that he didn't seem to care if he had enough for himself, and that made the man embrace Islam (Muslim). Prophet Muhammad's generosity (peace and blessings be upon him) covered a lot of aspects. He always gave away gifts and paid the debts of the dead. He asked to be informed if anyone died in debt. He always gave charity; he always helped others. If he couldn't help them at a point, he would promise to help them later. If he received gifts, he would give them away. He never turned away anyone from his house empty-handed, and he always gave preference to the needy over his own needs. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was also very generous to his neighbors. In fact he said that a believer is not a person who eats while his neighbor is hungry. He taught us to always be aware of the state of our surroundings and offer a helping hand to those in need. Many stories of the early Muslims demonstrate how ingrained generosity was in their lives. It is said that during war a bottle of water was passed around the Muslim army until it finally returned to its owner, who at the beginning had refused to drink before the others did, and so did everyone else in the army, until the bottle reached him still full. All of these people demonstrated the act of generosity and thinking of others' needs before themselves. Zakaat Al Mal Zakaatul Fitr

TFG soldiers protest over pay Somali government soldiers have staged protests in two towns to demand payment after going seven months without any wages. There was an exchange of gunfire in a barracks in Jowhar, near the capital, but there were no casualities. Angry soldiers have taken control of a police station in the central town of Beledweyne. The government is trying to assert its control after ousting Islamists from the capital, with Ethiopian backing. Somalia has not had an affective national government for 16 years, since when rival militias have been battling for control of different areas. Tax drive Meanwhile, a roadside bomb has gone off near a convoy carrying Mogadishu mayor, and former warlord, Muhammad Dheere, although no-one was hurt. Such attacks occur on an almost daily basis and are usually blamed on Islamist insurgents and fighters from the ****** clan - the largest in Mogadishu. ****** leaders say they will not attend a reconciliation conference due to be held next month. The BBC's Mohammed Olad Hassan in Mogadishu says that until the government took control of the capital last December, soldiers were given occasional payments, even if they have not been paid regular salaries for many years. But our reporter says even these have not been paid this year. Bodyguards for the president and prime minister have, however, been paid, he says. The government, chosen in 2004 after more than two years of peace talks in neighbouring Kenya, is trying to generate some revenue by asking companies to pay taxes. Some businessmen, especially in telecommunications, are thriving despite the lawlessness - partly because they have not had to pay any taxes for so long. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6272508.stm
