Save our war memorials: Lottery to fund anti-tribalism project to teach youths about 'Mad Mullah'

He was a Somali religious leader known to British colonial officers as the "Mad Mullah" for his bloody 20-year struggle against foreign rule.

 

In the course of his insurgency at the start of the last century, tens of thousands of his own countrymen died – along with a handful of men from British forces.

 

Now, Mohammed Abdullah Hassan is to be the subject of a 12-month project to engage disaffected Somali youth, after the Heritage Lottery Fund gave a London group £35,500 to study him.

 

It is one of a number of projects paid for by the HLF at a time when it is under increasing pressure to make it easier to fund the restoration and repair of Britain's imperilled war memorials.

 

Under its own rules it refuses to offer funds for less than £3,000, pay for "open-ended" maintenance, and insists that restoration projects include an extra "education element".
