Lawmakers Plan Presidential Elections August in Mogadishu

Somali Transitional Parliament speaker, Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden said on Thursday presidential elections would take a place inside Mogadishu before the end of August.

"There will be a committee that organizes presidential elections before August this year including African Union, International Observers, IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Development), United Nations and International community," the speaker said in a statement read by Head of parliamentary committee of information affairs, Lawmaker Awad Ahmed Ashara in a Press Conference.

The statement says the government's mandate is planned to expire in August this year and the lawmakers will elect speaker and deputy speaker before the mandate expires.

Somali Members of Parliament voted last month to extend their mandate three more years, but Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has called for a review of the extension, while the parliament speaker has said they won't reverse the decision. Also the international community condemned the extension but Lawmaker Ashara described their decision as deplorable.

"Somali lawmakers have the right to extend their own mandate, and the international community and other nations can't boycott the parliament's decision," Aden said in the statement.

Somalia hasn't had a functioning central administration since 1991, when clan militias overthrown Siad Barre's Adiministration.
