Is Al-Qaida playing a critical role in Somalia's long instability

Recommended Posts

Al-Qaeda has issued and posted many online speeches in support of the Al-shabab's continual menace, assasination, and suicide missions. Our country is in great danger. We need a counter-insurgency initiative like the Awakening Council or concerned local citizens in Iraq, to isolate the Al-shababs and their foreign elements. Al-Qaeda still remains a potential danger to future governments in Somalia and might have already established a global jihadist taproot in Somalia. We are now sowing the combined seeds of our own self-destruction, anarchy and international neglect.

This speech is in response to the Djibouti Peace Accord

HOL is quite biased in this article in that it calls Colonel Aweis and IndhaAde as Islamic scholars. :D

Senior Al-Qaedi Member Calls on Somalia Islamists to Continue their Struggle

Hiiraan Online

Monday, June 23, 2008

Mogadishu, Somalia (HOL) - A senior Al-Qaeda officern has called upon the forces that are opposed to the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and the presence of Ethiopian troops in Somalia to continue their struggle until Ethiopian troops withdraw from Somalia and an Islamic government is set up in Somalia.

“Do not accept anything less than the implementation of independent Islamic government in Somalia and do not recognize the legitimacy of international rules”, said Abu Yahya Al-Libi.

Mr. Al-Libi is one of the leaders of Al-Qaeda and has made these statements via a recording at a website known for its support of the Al-Qaeda organization. Mr. Al-Libi praised Islamic scholars who have opposed the recent peace agreement in Djibouti between the TFG and the opposition Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia (ARS). Among the articles in the agreement is a conditional withdrawal of Ethiopian troops from Somalia within 120 days as well as an immediate ceasefire.

“Replacing Ethiopian troops in Somalia with UN troops or AU troops or whatever name is given to such troops will not change the current situation in Somalia”, said Mr. Al-Libi.

Several prominent Islamic leaders in Somalia such as Sheik Hasan Dahir Aweis, Shiek Hasan Abdullahi Hersi (Sheik Turki) and Sheik Yusuf Mohamed Siyad Indhacade have opposed the recent peace agreement in Djibouti and said that the agreement will not solve the problems in the country.

Since the beginning of 2007, Islamic forces in Somalia have been waging deadly guerrilla war against TFG of Somalia and Ethiopian troops. Their guerrilla war resembles in many ways the current guerrilla war Iraqi insurgents are waging against US forces in Iraq.

Adeer Aydeed , Omar Jess’s and other warlords fighters were seen as courageous when they were wrecking havoc on Somalia, where are they now?

In Somalia it has been a historical fact that it is easy to kill, maim and pillage. Its much more difficult to build anything tangible.

Thus what are they achieving?

Besides, Al-shababs and the ring leaders of its disorginzed militia don't want short of Islamic state that claims parts of recognized territories in other states.

I wonder how will this goal be feasible or doable?

Lool, adeer you comparing apples to oak trees. The Somali President has created a stable state in Puntland, defeated no other than Xasan Dahir Al Asmari in Puntland. Thus if history is the main reference it is Xasan & his day dreams that end up in the trash bag.

Thus what does all the hoo haa achieve, Yey is still in Mogadishu, his forces are not spent chasing shadows, he knows about Guerrilla warfare and its limits.

Somali Insurgents Reject al-Qaida Criticism

By Derek Kilner

Nairobi

23 June 2008

A leader of a Somali insurgent group that signed an agreement with the interim government earlier this month has dismissed an al-Qaida leader's criticism of the deal. Derek Kilner reports from VOA's East Africa bureau in Nairobi.

Earlier this month, the leader of the Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia, a moderate Islamist insurgent group, signed an agreement with the prime minister of Somalia's Transitional Federal Government, calling for an end to fighting within a month and for a U.N. peacekeeping mission to replace Ethiopian forces in the country.

Sunday, an al-Qaida leader, Abu Yahya Al-Libi, posted a video to a militant Islamist website, criticizing the deal. He urged Somalis to continue fighting for an Islamist government in Somalia.

Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia Deputy Chairman Abdirahman Abdishakur, who was in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, rejected the terrorist appeal.

"I do not think we are interested in al-Qaida's statements and they have nothing to do with Somali issues. Al-Qaida has not got any base in Somalia and they always issue statements against any peace process. I do not think their statements are relevant to the Somali people," said Abdishakur.

Abdirahman headed the Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia's delegation to the negotiations, which were held in Djibouti with U.N., EU, and U.S. backing.

"Somali people want to see the Ethiopians leave from their country and an international peacekeeping force to be deployed, and that has been agreed in Djibouti conference. And what we are interested in as A.R.S. is how Somali people can reach an agreement and how we can end the conflict and occupation," he added.

More radical insurgent leaders have rejected the peace deal. These include Sheikh Hassan Turki and Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, who have been accused of ties to al-Qaida by the United States, and who say they will not negotiate with the interim government until Ethiopian forces leave the country.

The United Nations has said it would consider sending a force to Somalia, but putting one in place is likely to prove difficult. Six months into a peacekeeping mission in the Darfur region of nearby Sudan, the world body has still managed to deploy fewer than 10,000 of the planned 26,000 troops.

Since January, 2007, Somalia's transitional government, backed by Ethiopian forces, has been battling an insurgency composed of several Islamist and clan-based militias. The conflict has displaced more than one million people in what U.N. officials have called Africa's worst humanitarian crisis.
